The junior section at Gullane is run very enthusiastically and the club is very supportive of junior golf from a very young age.
ReplyDeleteThe success of the recent U.S. Kids Golf tournament shows the depth of talent in East Lothian.
ReplyDeleteThe area is blessed with fantastic courses and no end of youngsters willing to pick up their clubs.
Now, thanks to this blog, the area also has a superb online resource for young players and their families.
Great stuff.
Each year it is a great pleasure to work with the members of Gullane Golf Club on our US Kids Golf European Championship. The members there have opened their facilities, their volunteer base, and literally their doors so that over 450 kids and families from around the world could enjoy them. They have recognized that inspiring young people to enjoy links golf is essential. I am tremendously delighted by this spirit.

Two of my children have done Clubgolf at Gullane and benefited enormously from it. It sets them up to play golf in a relaxed and fun way. This is a huge reflection on the dedicated Clubgolf coaches who give up their own time to deliver it. Gullane has produced many US Kids competitors because of this fantastic start.
ReplyDeleteI have recently joined the Junior Golf Section and really enjoyed my first medal on the 30th May. I was warmly welcomed by everybody, and I am looking forward to my next medal soon.

My experience of involvement with Gullane Junior golf is extremely positive combining the right blend of development in all aspects of the game of golf for all age groups including boys and girls. We have a forthcoming regular Under 14 match with Gullane to be played this Friday this time at the Glen which will give the kids an opportunity to play in a golf match in the right environment to develop their skills and more importantly enjoy themselves on the golf course. Even more so if we get more of the fantastic East Lothian weather that we have had for the last five days - shine on!

When I was a 7 year old at Gullane School in 1956 (unbelievable I know but sadly true) I first started to hit golf balls on Goose Green. Some nearby houses still bear the scars! Juniors at that time had few opportunities for coaching and access to courses. I am very impressed with the current structure within Gullane Juniors (and their website.) The organisers show exactly the type of commitment and communication skills required to provide opportunities for youngsters, from the roots on the 6 hole Kids Course all the way to competing at National level. Well done Gullane!
ReplyDeleteI joined Gullane Golf Club as a junior member in September 09 and think the people are really friendly and helpful. I enjoy playing there because I am made to feel really welcome. Its always really easy to find out what is going on.
ReplyDeleteSince we moved North to Gullane 6 years ago both of my sons have really taken to Golf in a big way. Our initial contact with the junior sport was the annual comp. on the (free to play) kids course , nothing like this exists down in Warwickshire where we were previously. Oliver has benefitted massively from Club Golf and for the last 2 winters the Lothians Junior Squad sessions , William is trying to follow in his footsteps and i have also been bitten by the golfing bug and trained to become a Club Golf coach this year. Everyone is made very welcome and the progression from simple learning in small gorups to playing on the kids course and then off the Club Golf tee's on No.3 make golf for juniors firstly accessible and secondly creats opportunities for progression through coaching and competitive opportunities.

As Junior Convenor for GLGC I feel so lucky to have been in post at such an exciting time. Our girls vary in ability from low handicappers (who represent their country) to novice golfers and all are well served by the Junior Section. The girls take part in mixed medals, are included in teams and friendlies so the playing opportunities are endless and inclusive of all who want to play whatever their ability.
ReplyDeleteThe blog has been a huge success and is a helpful resource by making news both at club level and in the wider golfing world, readily available.
Finally the committment to encouraging the club golfers to become part of the Junior section by the introduction of escorted 6 hole golf (4 times this year) as part of the junior medal has really made the junior section all encompassing.

You may also like to mention Dirleton Castle Ladies GC. We do have one junior member - Sarah Dunlop and would like more youngsters to come forward. The ladies have been great supporters of the Peel cup - both financially and also by acting as markers for the junior players. They also "man" the putting competition during Games Week.

Junior Golf in Gullane has moved with the times with the development of the blogg following on from the successful Clubgolf programme. This is a wonderful support facility for the Juniors in a user friendly format.
ReplyDeleteRegular updates and reminders encourage continual involvement of the membership in events not just at the club but further afield with useful links and articles of interest.
Well Done to all involved.

Well done to the Gullane Juniors as well as all the other kids from around the globe.
ReplyDeleteThe message is getting through to GGC that it has to be about the kids.
Your efforts over the last few years have started to pay great rewards, some of the scoring over the week were great, the juniors now can stand their own in the medals.
The future looks bright.
Great credit to you.
Well done

It is tremendous to see the way in which junior golf in Gullane has developed over recent years. Successive Junior Convenors have put in a huge amount of work to provide opportunities and incentives for youngsters at every level. We now have a very active and successful Clubgolf scheme and a great programme of junior events and competitions. The fruits of this are evident: from the numbers taking up the game and the increased participation of girls in golf, to the performance of the junior team in the East Lothian league and the contribution of Gullane youngsters to national and even international competitions. Above all, an atmostphere has been created that clearly welcomes, encourages and values young golfers.
ReplyDeleteAs the parent of 4 junior members at GGC I have witnessed at first hand the level of committment and enthusiasm displayed by successive convenors and their assistants.
ReplyDeleteThe junior section strikes the right balance between recreational golf and competitive opportunities that allow the youngsters to find their level in the game.
The facilities available at Gullane and the progressive attitude of the Convenor and his assistants set the standard against which other Clubs in the area are judged.

I am so impressed by everyone who gets involved in clubgolf, organising teams and running Junior competitions. Thanks for all your hard work, and for making Gullane a centre of excellence for Junior Golf.
ReplyDeleteThe evidence is in the results... and all the happy faces in the photographs on the website...
Well done!

Clubgolf has now been running successfully in East Lothian for the last 5 years. As a community where golf plays a large part it is important to encourage young talent and enthusiasm for the game where we have some of the most beautiful courses in Scotland.
ReplyDeleteGolf and golf coaching is taken forward by our Primary 5 children in Gullane Primary and the class teacher works alongside a trained golf coach to support and enthuse the children.
The golf coaching in Gullane Primary is well supported by a few keen parents who work well to promote the sport and encourage young players. The school hold golf matches for two trophies. The pupils play for these trophies each year. The last two years have seen a heightened interest in these trophies due in no small part by two parents who have supported the school. These trophies are now talked about and keenly debated throughout the summer term. Young, less experienced golfers are now given the opportunity to play in a short competition with fewer holes which encourages them to practise and take part. The Babe Zaharias Trophy was gifted to the school in 1964 and has been played for since that time. Babe Zaharias was an inspirational sportswoman and she won the Ladies Amateur Golf Championship in Gullane in 1947. Her husband returned to donate the trophy after she died as he was so enamoured of the area. I hope the pupils are inspired by her achievements.
The two parents actively support the youngsters and involve parents which is super. Gullane Golf Club liaise with the school and the clubgolf group. This allows the children to gain a feel for a golf club and spurs them on. We now have young 10 year old pupils as members of the golf club and working on their handicaps.
By promoting the game young people have the opportunity to develop their skills and focus on a sport which includes others. They develop and understanding of fair play and gamesmanship. They are focused on their individual targets and be able to support others.
I am eternally grateful to Mr McLean and Mr Walker and other clubgolf coaches for the support they have given the children in Gullane Primary and for passing on their enthusiasm for the game of golf. Their work has really energised the pupils.

Iain,
ReplyDeleteI have left a bag of Davids mostly unworn Gullane Juniors clothing in the pro's shop. I hope a good home can be found as they are just sitting in a drawer here.
David in his 1st year out of juniors has won the QE tournament and the famous Halford Hewitt with Watsonians and the Varsity match for Oxford all with Gullane penned after his name. Obviously his father and uncles were never Gullane juniors!!
Thanks for all your hard work.
All the best for the season.
