A successful fairway bunker shot is about hitting the ball and not the sand. Firstly establish a stable stance by shuffling your feet into the sand. Then hold the club one inch lower down to offset the sunken foot position. Next tense your grip and forearms, this will narrow the arc width and ensure a clean contact. Go ahead and make a normal swing. Remember, always select enough loft to get over the bunker lip. You may also feel that taking a club extra may help when playing this shot as you might find you will lose distance compared to a normal shot from the fairway. |
The Greenside Bunker Shot. Somebody once said: “A greenside bunker shot is the easiest shot in golf. In fact it is so easy you don’t even have to hit the ball.” The essence of the shot is to hit the sand correctly using the base or back edge of the club, allowing the ball to pop out on a cushion of sand. Set up is key: Position the ball opposite the front heel, hover the club head behind the ball but point the shaft at your belt buckle. Execute a positive swing that bangs the club into the sand 3-4 inches before the ball and follow through.
