Lesley Atkins, 15-year-old recent winner of the Scottish Under-18 girls’ match-play golf championship, chalked up her biggest win in open tournament play at Gullane, East Lothian today.

The Loretto School, Musselburgh pupil, who hails from Hawick, won the Mackie Bowl 36-hole SLGA Order of Merit event over her home course with very good rounds of 71 and 69 – the par is 74 – for an eight-under total of 140.

Because the eighth hole on the No 1 course has been remodelled and lengthened, Lesley's 69 will be recognised as a new women's course record.

Atkins had four shots to spare at the finish from the Majorca-based Scot, Lauren Mackin. Lauren had rounds of 74 and 70.

Showing a welcome return to form, Roseanne Niven (Crieff), the British women’s amateur stroke-play champion of two years ago, finished third on 148 with rounds of 75 and 73
