Our Scottish girls champion sets Gullane women's course record of 69 !!

LESLEY ATKINS WINS MACKIE BOWL BY FOUR STROKES

Courtesy of Kirwood Golf

Lesley Atkins, 15-year-old recent winner of the Scottish Under-18 girls’ match-play golf championship, chalked up her biggest win in open tournament play at Gullane, East Lothian today.

The Loretto School, Musselburgh pupil, who hails from Hawick, won the Mackie Bowl 36-hole SLGA Order of Merit event over her home course with very good rounds of 71 and 69 – the par is 74 – for an eight-under total of 140.

Because the eighth hole on the No 1 course has been remodelled and lengthened, Lesley's 69 will be recognised as a new women's course record.

Atkins had four shots to spare at the finish from the Majorca-based Scot, Lauren Mackin. Lauren had rounds of 74 and 70.

Showing a welcome return to form, Roseanne Niven (Crieff), the British women’s amateur stroke-play champion of two years ago, finished third on 148 with rounds of 75 and 73

Important Championship Victory for Gullane Boy !

It may have been the Scottish Boys Sytrokeplay and Girls U21 this week but just as important was the Esmond Trophy at North Berwick Kids Couse  won by 10 yo William Ladbrooke !! Played on a match play basis following strokeplay qualification , the Ladbrooke brothers navigated through the quarters and semis to meet in the final with William steadying  his initial nerves and settling in to defeat older brother Oliver in a battle of the putter.

Many a successful golfing career has been launched by the Kids Competitions at NB and this is exactly the place where younger Gullane golfers should be honing their competitive skills - hopefully  not too late to enter the remaining competitions this summer if you haven't already

Well done to both the Ladbrookes !!

Scottish boys' open stroke-play championship won by Linus Vaisanen

Grandstand Finnish by young man from Helsinki
By ROSS DUNCAN

Scottish Golf Union marketing and sponsorship manager

Finland’s Linus Vaisanen held his nerve in a dramatic finish to clinch the Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship by one shot from Pollok’s Conor O’Neil at Craigielaw this evening.

Vaisanen, who will return to Scotland in September to study economics and finance at Edinburgh University, fired a two-under par final round 69 to post a total of 281, holing a 10-foot birdie putt on the last green having let a three shot lead disappear on the previous three holes.

The 18-year-old from Helsinki was joint leader overnight, but a two-over par 73 this morning left him three shots behind Scott Gibson going into the final round. After Gibson played himself out of contention on the front nine as O’Neil edged in front, the turning point for the young Fin came with a superb eagle three at the long 11th, after his 8-iron approach landed just six feet from the pin.

The Finnish Boys Championship runner-up then bogeyed 15, 16 and 17 to fall back to two-under par alongside O’Neil, who narrowly failed to birdie the final two holes, and a superb up and down from just off the back of the 18th green handed victory to Vaisanen, the fourth foreign player to win a Scottish championship in 2010.

A delighted Vaisanen said:

“This is my first trip to Scotland so I’m thrilled to lift the trophy. It’s also my first experience of links golf but I’ve loved every minute of it. I came into the event with a lot of confidence having finished second back home last week in my national championship and that was the key. My driving was good all week and although I was shaky playing the last few holes, I managed to keep my nerve at the last.”

“The people here in Scotland have been fantastic and the staff at Craigielaw have really looked after me. I acclimatised myself by eating haggis in a bar in Edinburgh watching The Open on Sunday afternoon, so I now feel very home in Scotland and look forward to studying here.” he added.

O’Neil’s final round started brightly with birdies at the 1st and 4th and despite dropped shots at the 3rd and 5th the former St Ninians High school pupil moved into a share of the lead at the turn. However, a number of birdie chances slipped by and he could only par the final thirteen holes for a level par 71 and a four-round aggregate of 282.

“I’m disappointed to miss out on the win but pleased with my performance this week. It was a frustrating final round with my putter having given myself so many chances, but I’ll head to Michigan State University next month for my scholarship in good confidence.” said O’Neil, whose triplet brother Patrick was also in the field.

Falkirk Tryst’s Jamie Lynch clinched the bronze medal with a one-under par final round of 70, while Aberdeen born Daniel Hendry – representing the United Arab Emirates – finished fourth on level par to lift the U16s title.

Grant Forrest’s hopes of a dream national title double faded with a closing round of 75 to end the week in seventh place, with Scotland team-mate Gibson in fifth place on one-over par after going out of bounds on the final hole.

Stage set for great finish to Scottish boys' open stroke play at Craigielaw

FORREST READY TO CATCH FIRE ON FINAL DAY BID FOR TITLE DOUBLE

FROM ROSS DUNCAN

Scottish Golf Union

Craigielaw's Grant Forrest, playing over his home course, has his sights set firmly on completing a national title double after a level par second round 71 left him just a shot behind joint leaders Lloyd Best and Linus Vaisanen with 36 holes still to play in the Scottish boys' open stroke-play golf championship at the East Lothian venue.

Best, from Sherwood Forest and young Finnish star Vaisanen, who shared the overnight lead, matched each other with one-over par 72s to take a one-shot lead on 139 going into the final day on three-under par.

In worsening conditions, Scottish boys' match-play champion Forrest stayed patient and notched his third birdie of the day at the par-5 final hole for a 140 tally to secure a slot in the penultimate group today(Thursday).

Round of the day came from Falkirk Tryst’s Jamie Lynch, a beaten semi-finalist at West Kilbride in the boys' match play championship in April. He stormed over the outward nine with a four-under par 31. Despite a bogey at the tenth, Lynch move to five-under for his round with a superb eagle at the long 12th and although a birdie at the 15th was sandwiched by bogeys at the 14th and 16th, he signed off for a four-under par 67 to sit just two off the pace.

Lynch was joined on the 141 mark by Scottish boy international Scott Gibson (Southerness), who remained in contention for his maiden national title with a level par 71 and tied for fourth place. Pollok’s Conor O’Neil, one of the lowest handicappers in the field, shot an impressive two-under par 69 to sit menacingly poised three shots back, alongside Troon’s Marc Smith who matched O’Neil’s round of 69, with New Zealander Craig Hamilton on the same mark.

Defending champion Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) has it all to do after a two-over par 73 left him six shots behind the leaders on 145, while 14-year-old Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie), who won his second successive national Under-14s title last week, and Scottish boys championship beaten finalist Ian Redford both birdied the last hole to scrape inside the cut mark on 148, six-over par.

SCOTTISH GIRLS U21 - DUNFERMLINE DAY ONE

KELSEY IN FRONT AND SHE INTENDS TO STAY THERE
IN TITLE HAT-TRICK BID

By COLIN FARQUHARSON  ( Thanks Colin - Please follow http://www.kirkwoodgolf.co.uk/ for more news on this and on Mackie  Bowl at Gullane this Sunday where many of girls will be playing - I won't be blogging it all )

Nobody has won the Scottish Under-21 girls’ open amateur stroke-play golf championship three times in a row since Kathryn Imrie (Monifieth) between 1985 and 1987.

But Nairn Dunbar’s Kelsey MacDonald, winner of the title for the past two years, must have an outstanding chance of completing the hat-trick at Dunfermline Golf Club this week.

The 19-year-old Stirling University student is probably playing the golf of her young life at the moment.

Winner of the Scottish women’s championship at Craigielaw in May, Kelsey was then beaten finalist in the British women’s open amateur championship at Ganton. Now she has opened her bid for a three-timer in the Under-21s’ championship with a par-matching round of 72 over a Pitfirrane course so sodden by heavy rain that there was an hour’s delay at one point to allow the excess water to subside.

MacDonald, pictured above, started like a house on fire with a birdies at the long third and the par-4 third and a bogeyat the short fifth did not douse the glame. She birdied the long seventh to be out in two-under-par 33.

Then, perhaps the very wet conditions got to her. She couldn’t coax out another birdie on the inward half, having eight pars and a double-bogey 6 at the 14th in two-over 39 for the second half.

Craigielaw’s Jane Turner, who caddied for MacDonald in her closing matches of the “British” at Ganton, is her nearest challenge going into the second of three rounds. Jane could have ended the first day on level terms but bogey two of the last three holes, the short 16th and the 18th. Mind you she birdied the ones in between, the long 15th and 17th for level par 37 home.

On the outward journey, she got another birdie at a long hole, the third but the short holes, the fifth and ninth, tripped her up with bogeys and she turned in one-over 36.

Two lasses from Lancashire, Emma Clegg (Clitheroe) and Ormskirk’s Lucie Walker are filling third and fourth positions on 74 and 75 respectively.

Among those in joint fifth place on 76 are Lesley Atkins (Gullane), winner of the Scottish girls’ match-play title at Eyemouth on Saturday, and Ailsa Bain (Peebles), winner of that same Under-18 championship last year.

Junior Club of Year 2009 - ORKNEY

PGA Captain Jim Farmer and clubgolf Project Manager, Torquil McInroy, present a cheque for £1000 to Orkney GC’s Junior Administrator Janette Mackie and volunteer coach Stewart Fotheringhame, winners of the clubgolf Junior Club of the Year Award, at The Open. Image by Rob Eyton-Jones.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ORKNEY GC  FROM GULLANE - THEY HAVE DONE GREAT THINGS UP NORTH INVESTING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FACILITIES FOR THE BENEFIT OF JUNIORS AND THE REST OF THE CLUB AND SO THAT THEY HAVE ALL YEAR ROUND FACILITIES DESPITE A LONG DARK WINTER ( COMPENSATED BY LONG SUMMER NIGHTS AND MIDNIGHT GOLF IN JUNE ! ) NO LOSS WHAT A FRIEND GETS - THEIR CAPTAIN IS A GULLANE BOY ANDREW BONNAR !! WELL DONE FROM GULLANE !!!

Orkney Golf Club awarded clubgolf Junior Club of the Year

Orkney Golf Club was crowned winner of the clubgolf Junior Club of the Year Award at The Old Course, St Andrews today (Wednesday 14th July), the final practice day for The Open Championship, after a tight contest with six other shortlisted clubs.
Organised by Scotland’s national junior programme clubgolf and sponsored by the Scottish Golf Union, the Awards recognise clubs that have demonstrated excellence in promoting junior golf during 2009.
PGA Captain, Jim Farmer, who was part of the judging panel, awarded Orkney GC £1,000 from the SGU, to be invested in its junior programme. The club was also invited to put forward a team of three adult members to play in a European Tour pro-am, playing alongside a leading professional golfer.
The six runners up clubs - Eyemouth GC (Berwickshire), Gullane GC (East Lothian), McDonald GC (Ellon, Aberdeenshire), Orkney GC, Palacerigg GC (North Lanarkshire), Powfoot GC (Dumfries & Galloway) and The Royal Montrose GC (Angus) - were each awarded £300 from the SGU to help develop their junior programmes.
All seven clubs offer clubgolf coaching. clubgolf is a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association, the Professional Golfers' Association, the Golf Foundation and sportscotland, which emerged from Scotland’s successful bid to host the Ryder Cup,
When Orkney GC began offering clubgolf coaching in 2007, its junior coaching numbers jumped quickly from 22 to 74, outstripping its coaching facilities. The resourceful islanders secured funding (from three local businesses and sportscotland’s Sportsmatch scheme) and in 2009 opened new facilities which included an indoor golf centre, outdoor double bay practice net, four forward junior tees with artificial mats and a four hole short course.
To meet the demands of more juniors, in 2009 the club increased the numbers of qualified volunteer coaches to 14, four of whom were trained to Advanced Level 1 CPD to coach at Stage 2. Lacking a PGA Pro on the islands, the club secured funds to bring in a PGA Pro for a ‘Summer School’. As well as coaching the club’s juniors the Pro mentored the club’s volunteer coaches.
Said Orkney Golf Club’s Junior Administrator, Janette Mackie, “It is fantastic to win and a great reward to everyone that has helped us make this project successful.
“So many people have been involved within the club to make our junior programme a success. Willie Mackay (clubgolf Regional Manager for Highlands and Islands) has given us a tremendous amount of belief to progress our junior programme.
“We feel we are a small club but this has given us a big belief that we are genuinely part of the golf scene in Scotland. This is great for the future.”
Said clubgolf Project Manager, Torquil McInroy: “Congratulations to Orkney Golf Club for demonstrating real drive, and achieving impressive growth despite the many challenges faced by being in a remote location. This has been a real team effort involving the club and its local community.
“Orkney’s efforts are a great example to other clubs and this award is recognition of the hard work carried out by their volunteer coaches and club members. The infrastructure they have set up will benefit juniors and the community alike for years to come.
“The response to the awards in its third year was again very encouraging and I would like to thank all of the clubs who entered this year.
“All seven clubs shortlisted showed tremendous initiative and excellence in developing and promoting junior golf.
“The good work by clubs across the country is vital for the health and future of the game. Long may it continue.”

LESLEY IN SCOTTISH GIRLS FINAL - TEE OFF 9AM TODAY !!

SCOTTISH UNDER-18 GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

LESLEY ATKINS                   KATE McINTOSH

LESLEY v KATE IN ALL-LOTHIANS FINAL AT EYEMOUTH

After a day of shock results at windswept Eyemouth, Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe), 25th of the 32 qualifiers, will play the No 3 seed, Lesley Atkins (Gullane), in an all-Lothians 18-hole final of the Scottish girls’ championship tomorrow morning.
McIntosh toppled the No 1 seed and hot favourite Rachael Watton (Mortonhall & Gullane ) by 3 and 1 in the quarter-finals and then, with the wind increasing in intensity, Kate KO’d the No 4 seed, Gemma Dryburgh from Aberdeen via Florida, where she is a student at the IMG David Leadbetter Golf Academy.
Gemma could not manage a single par on the outward half in the so difficult conditions for the semi-finals and McIntosh was five up at the turn. She went on to win 6 and 5.

Lesley Atkins, a pupil a Loretto School, Musselburgh and originally a member of Minto Golf Club when she was the youngest-ever Borders women's county champion, upset the form book in the morning with a 5 and 3 win over the No 2 seed and Renfrewshire women’s county champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm).
In the afternoon, Atkins was roughly seven over par for the outward half into the gale but had a lead of two holes over the No 3 seed, Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw). MacDonald rallied in the closing stages from three to one down by winning the 15th and 16th but she four-putted to lose the 17th and the match 2 and 1
.
All four semi-finalists are young enough to compete again in next year’s championship which is unusual – McIntosh is 16, Atkins 15, MacDonald 17 and Dryburgh 17.
The Ansley Reid Salver second-tier match-play competition - Kate McIntosh won it last year, incidentally -  was won this year by Rachel Hanlon (St Regulus), the East of Scotland girls champion who was expected to qualify for the main event but didn’t. She beat Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe) 3 and 2 in the final.

Afternoon results:
CHAMPIONSHIP
Semi-finals
Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) bt Gemma Dryburgh (IMG Academies) 6 and 5.
Lesley Atkins (Gullane) bt Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) 2 and 1.

Morning results
QUARTER-FINALS
Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) bt Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) 3 and 1.
Gemma Dryburgh (IMG Academies) bt Rachel Polson (Peterculter) 4 and 2.
Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) bt Hannah McCook (Abernethy) 3 and 2.
Lesley Atkins (Gullane) bt Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) 5 and 3.
