The Race to Muirfield - The Final Shoot-Out

We are delighted to have this fixture on Monday 30th August. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers have kindly allowed 14 of our Junior members to play on Muirfield on a courtesy basis. It is the Top Ranked Course in the UK ( Golf World ) and one of the best in the World.

We have selected those to play on the basis of scratch performances in our medals, junior open and a couple of other competitions this year. The points tally for boys is shown against each name, based on 18 points for a par round , 17 for +1 etc.

Well done Alasdair and Duncan for playing so well and to Greg who is hot on their heels - others - you will have your chance on Monday !!

Two girls Lesley and Clara have also been invited on the basis of their excellent performances over the season

Participants detailed below

Here are the plans for the evening

1. First tee off is 4pm SHARP.  The Captain of HCEG Alistair Low will be there to meet us. We will be teeing off until c 4.45pm

2. All those who are not at school on Monday should be there ready to play for 4pm. We won't be using the Clubhouse so please turn up in your golf clothes, including shoes. Please wear Gullane team kit if you have it - otherwise please be smartly turned out. On this occasion you may wear Tantallon team kit if you wish !

3. For those at school at NBHS, Kim Gillies and Gordon Swan are available to pick you up after the last period rather than getting the bus - please sort this out direct by email - this will get you home to change and along to Muirfield quicker - please be there as soon as you can.

4. Please bring other shoes as we will go to Gullane Members Clubhouse after for refreshments. When you finish your round please wait and watch the others coming in - leaving your bag in front of the Clubhouse

5. We will play in twos and pairings will be finalised on the evening. It will be a medal round, counting for handicap for the boys. Cards and pencils will be provided ! Please play as speedily as you can as the light is starting to fade by 8pm ! Watch out for the rough and bunkers - you need to think your way round this course !! Take your medicine from both. Some of the long par 4s are very tough and there is no shame in taking a 5 on some of these.

6. May I suggest that everyone has a look, in advance, at the Muirfield website It contains a course guide and please also read the History section. I think AG also has course guides for sale. See if you can spot Tom Grey's mother !?

Here is a note of past Open winners there - some decent names !!

2002 E Els South Africa    278

6. SHOOT- OUT  We have decided that everyone should be able to compete on a level scratch basis on the night rather than on the basis of accumulated points for the year. So this becomes an end of season shoot-out !! Will the lower handicappers have the skill to hold off the younger and fast improving whippersnappers who might fancy their chances ? Young Williams is on a roll and has prior Muirfield experience ? Is widely travelled Renaissance Boy Wilson going to be the man or will Simpson hold onto the crown ? What about Castle Finalist Houlston ? Or will Legget have a final hurrah and show his class ? Maybe the girls will have more guile and patience and outshine the bigger hitting boys !!? Its all to play for but above all a great experience and hopefully fun !!
