GULLANE MEMBER WINS WASHINGTON JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION CHAMPS IN USA !

Frank Olav Garber has won the Boys 14-15 division of the WJGA (Washington Jr. Golf Association) State Championship. He shot 71-70-74 for a one-under par total over 54 holes, good enough for a one stroke victory. This was his third WJGA state title, but the first time he has won when in the lower half of his age division. He started the final round tied for the lead, and it was nip and tuck all the way to the final hole. He was two down after eight holes... tied it up with a birdie at the ninth... took a two-up lead after a birdie on the 11th... then proceeded to three-putt 15 &16 to fall back into a tie. An up-and-down par at the 17th brought him back to one-up, and a routine par at the final hole sealed up the win after his opponent missed his birdie try.

His performance also earned him one of four spots representing Washington in the annual Hogan Cup team matches which take place in Portland, Oregon on August 13-15. The Washington team is selected based on performance points earned in designated events - WJGA and otherwise - throughout the summer; boys in both the 14-15 and 16-17 age groups are eligible, and compete for spots on the 17 & under team across age groups. The other three spots were earned by boys in the 16-17 age group. The team will play 36 holes of stroke play against eleven other teams from western states/provinces including Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Northern & Southern California, Oregon, Nevada, Hawaii and British Columbia. Past winners of the Hogan Cup include a fellow named Tiger Woods. :-)

After the Hogan Cup he'll be back up to the Seattle area for the PNGA (Pacific NW Golf Association) Junior Boys Championship August 16-21, another 17 & under event. The boys play 36 holes of stroke play qualifying, with the top 64 proceeding into match play in the championship flight. And then the following week will be turnouts for his high school team, with the high school golf season lasting through October. So lots of golf yet to be played this year!
