League Update - 28th August 2011

Report from EL website

Craigielaw's crucial home match with Gullane has had to be postponed - the Craigielaw course was closed. No date has yet been notified, but an extension has been offered till 11th Sept. In the meantime, Tantallon managed a narrow 3.5 - 2.5 win at Musselburgh Old so have retained top place, but they have secured at least a 2nd place, which gets them into the Scottish Final of the Home Nations Championship at Cardrona. Gullane have beaten Royal Musselburgh at Gullane by 5 - 1 so retain 2nd place. Royal Musselburgh now cannot finish in the top 2 but they have had a good season. If Craigielaw beat both Gullane and Longniddry [Longniddry ? They've played 10 per league table? ]Craigielaw will come 2nd in the League. However, if Gullane beat Craigielaw, then Gullane win the League. If they draw, then Tantallon would win the League on goal difference. An interesting end phase of the League, probably going to goal difference for the top 2 places! ( NO IT AIN'T !! )

Calcutta Cup 2011 - Saturday 27th August

A very successful weather beating afternoon ! With Craigielaw closed due to flooding on the 9th and with some temp greens on Nos 2 & 3 our adult / junior combos were delighted to get a full round on No1 in pleasant weather conditions.

More than 20 couples turned out on this  family occasion and it was very pleasing to see quite a few of our girls playing with their Mums & Dads. ( Note for next year - think about CSS handicap differentials )

Scoring was good and the top three prizes were as follows

3rd - Freddie & Fiona Neden - 37 pts ( after 3 way count back on BIH )

2nd -Henry & Sandy Gray  - 42 points

1st - Jamie Clugston & Lawrie Main - 43 points

Congratulations to Jamie & his Uncle Lawrie !!

Thanks to Chris / StarterNumberOne , Steven & the catering staff for excellent buffet and The Captain for doing the cards and the presentation.

LESLEY ATKINS JT 3rd FINISH AFTER WEATHER WIPES OUT ROUND 4

The final round of the North of England open Under-16 boys and girls' championships was cancelled after bad weather hit the Pannal course in Yorkshire.
That meant the placings after the morning third round became the final standings.
Lesley Atkins (Gullane), pictured, winner of the Scottish Under-18 girls' match-play championship last year when she was only 15, finished a creditable joint third on 226 with scores of 77, 72 and 77 against a CSS of 76, 74 and 75.
Long Ashton's Bethan Popel came through from several shots off the pace to win the Under-16 girls' title, thanks to an excellent final round of 71 for a total of 223. Her earlier rounds had been a pair of 76s.
Runner-up on 225 was Spain's Ainhoa Olarra with scores of 73, 75 and 77.
Sharing third place with Lesley Atkins on 226 was another Spanish player, Marta Martin with scores of 76, 75 and 75.
The Scot had several highly-rated English youngsters behind her in the final standings.
Junior Vagliano Trophy player Amber Ratcliffe (Royal Cromer), for instance, finished fifth on 227 with scores of 76, 76 and 75.

Mark Bruce off to Dubai - Leaves today !

Mark joined my team here in Gullane in 2006 and quickly made an impresion on the Pro Shop with an interest in coaching, his eye for fashion and connecting with the members of the club.

During his time here Mark has gained full membership into the PGA by achieving a merit grade in the Foundation Degree in Professional golf studies. With this qualification , Mark has been looking to broaden his horizons and continue to increase his knowledge of the golf Industry and step up his coaching foundations.

I'm happy to say that Mark has been offered a position at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai working within the first class Peter Cowan golf Academy that is affiliated with the Club. Shadowing Pete Cowan and looking to work with European Tour Professionals, this is a fantasic opportunity and an excellent step in his career. Mark will be leaving my team at the end of the month for an early September start in Dubai.

Mark has thoroughly enjoyed his time here at Gullane but is also looking forward to the new challenges that face him in the future.

Myself and the rest of the team wish him all the very best on his new venture.
If you would like to pop into the Pro Shop to see Mark before he leaves I'm sure he would be delighted to see you as he has made many friends here and is keen to keep in touch.

Regards,

Alasdair

Gullane Juniors wish Mark well and thank him for his input over recent years - coaching, chat, sales patter & fashion advice !!

We are delighted to have this fixture once again on Monday 29th August. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers have kindly allowed 14 of our Junior members to play on Muirfield on a courtesy basis. It is the Top Ranked Course in the UK (Golf World) and one of the best in the World.
We have selected those to play on the basis of commitment & performances in team matches, medals, junior opens and national events.

Participants detailed below
Here are the plans for the evening
1. First tee off is 4.30pm SHARP.  The Captain of HCEG Michael Walker will be there to meet us.
2. Everyone should be there for for 4.10pm. We won't be using the Clubhouse so please turn up in your golf clothes, including shoes. Please wear Gullane team kit if you have it - otherwise please be smartly turned out.
3. Please bring other shoes. When you finish your round please wait and watch the others coming in - leaving your bag in front of the Clubhouse
4. We will play in twos and pairings will be finalised on the evening. It will be a medal round, counting for handicap. Cards will be provided ! Please play as speedily as you can as the light is starting to fade by 8pm ! Watch out for the rough and bunkers - you need to think your way round this course !! Take your medicine from both. Some of the long par 4s are very tough and there is no shame in taking a 5 on some of these.
5. May I suggest that everyone has a look, in advance, at the Muirfield website It contains a course guide and please also read the History section. I think AG also has course guides for sale. See if you can spot Tom Grey's mother !?

6. SHOOT- OUT  We have decided that everyone should be able to compete on a level scratch basis on the night. So this becomes an end of season shoot-out !! Will the lower handicappers have the skill to hold off the younger and fast improving whippersnappers who might fancy their chances ?  Will our quality girls see off the boys ? Most of all have fun and enjoy the experience and represent Gullane well.
