Team Match 7 v Dunbar - Result

The team got back to winning ways with a convincing win on the road to Dunbar

Thomas Simmonds abd Michael Williams both recorded convincing wins in the scratch games but with Captain Greg losing by 1 hole. The handicap games were a tough ask with over 30 shots being given away - thankfully Graham Swan and Jamie Black came through convincingly with Scott suffering a reverse.

Overall 4-2 win in perfect conditions.

Gullane Junior Open - 22 July - Girls

15 girls entered our Open from near (Gullane, North Berwick, Craigielaw and Musselburgh) and far (Yorkshire,Dublin and Hong Kong).  We had some great scores on No 2 with Lesley Atkins  taking the top prize with a gross 69 ( 4 under SSS ) and the handicap prize going to Amelia Taylor of St Anne's who was net 70.  Good luck to both girls who are playing in the Mackie Bowl on Sunday.

Thanks to Dave the Starter, Jane Flockart & Anne Dalgleish GGC Admin and Stephen Anthony GGC secretary for their organisation.

Everyone admired the greens and feared the rough with the 17th hole costing many entrants a ball or two.

JACK McDONALD, WINNER IN 2009, LEADS SCOTTISH BOYS' FIELD

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Jack McDonald, the 2009 title-winner from Kilmarnock Barassie, is on the trail of Stephen Gallacher's double-whammy success in the Scottish Under-18 boys' amateur open stroke-play golf championship at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club.

Gallacher, now a successful European Tour pro, won the boys' stroke-play crown in back-to-back years: 1991 and 1992.

He was the last player to win this title twice.

McDonald, pictured right in 2009 with his haul of trophies, cannot obviously duplicate Gallacher's two-in-a-row feat but a two-under-par 70 to lead the first round at Nairn Dunbar is a great start to follow up his success of two years ago over four rounds at Ladybank.

McDonald had a little bit of a wobble just after the turn, having covered the first nine holes in a best of the day three-under-par 32 with birdies at the second, fifth and sixth.

Bogeys at the short 11th and 12th threatened to derail his effort but he covered the last six holes in one under par, thanks to a birdie at the long 16th.

Four players are breathing down his neck on the 71 mark, including Nairn's Sean Burgess who won the North District boys' title earlier this month and knows the Nairn Dunbar course almost as well as his home links.

Sean was struggling a bit with bogeys at the fifth and short eighth but he stopped the rote and covered the remaining holes in three under par with birdies at three par-5s: the ninth, 13th and 16th.

Also on 71 is Danile Hendry, all the way from the United Arab Emirates. He had more birdies than anyone - five in all, at the short third, short sixth, long ninth, long 16th and long 18th ... but he had to make up for a double bogey 6 at the seventh and single shots dropped at the 10th and short 15th.

League Match 6 v Tantallon - Sunday 17th July

On Sunday 17th July Gullane hosted Tantallon in a table topping match in the highly competitive East Lothian Junior League. Tantallon won 4-2 in a good match in excellent conditions on Gullane No1. On paper the teams were evenly matched in both the top three scratch games and the other three handicap matches, with each side fielding two junior internationalists.

Half way round it looked pretty even with each side ahead in three but Tantallon came through the stronger to take 4 of the games and convincingly secure the vital points.

There were fine individual performance from various players - Callum Hill putted like a dream on the fantastic greens going round in sub par figures and Euan Bowden was also under par trading 11 birdies with Lesley Atkins who held her nerve chipping and putting to win on the last despite a lost ball on 17. Excellent sub par scoring from Lesley ( an approximate 3 under the ladies card with 7 birdies  ) and a good win against a fine player.  Great prep for Mackie Bowl, Girls Home Internationals and British Girls all taking place at Gullane in coming weeks

Solid performances also from Ross Wilson, Murray Naismith ( excellent 2 on 16 to thwart Williams fightback ) and Lewis Govenlock for Tantallon and Thomas Simmonds from Gullane

1 Callum Hill (2) beat Alexander Wilson (2) 3&2

2 Euan Bowden (2) lost to Lesley Atkins (2) by 1 hole

3 Murray Naismith (4) beat Michael Williams (5) 2&1

4 Gary Brownlie (5)lost to Thomas Simmonds (5) 3&2

5 Ross Wilson (7) beat Scott Gillies (7) 4&3

6 Lewis Govenlock(13) beat Tom Middlemass (10)  4&3

Scottish Girls Report

EILIDH BRIGGS, GEMMA DRYBURGH TOP SEEDS AT GLENISLA

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Kilmacolm’s Eilidh Briggs and Aberdeen-born Gemma Dryburgh earned the Nos 1 and 2 seedings which could see them meet in Saturday morning’s 18-hole final of the Scottish Under-18 girls’ match-play championship at Glenisla Golf Club, Alyth.

But they will have to beat some very good players to make it through four rounds of match-play to the title decider. Eilidh and Gemma were in a threesome with Connie Jaffrey at the end of the field and they had a ding dong battle to see who would be the No 1 seed.
Briggs, beaten finalist in the Scottish women’s amateur championship at Machrihanish in May, repeated her par opening round of 71 for a top total of 142. She birdied the short fifth and 13th and bogeyed the long second and 15th in halves of 36 and 35.

The much-travelled Dryburgh, who enrols at Tulane University, Louisiana next month after several years at the IMG Leadbetter Academy in Florida, produced the lowest round of the 36-hole qualifying test – a one-under-par 70 with birdies at the long eighth and ninth for 34 out and a bogey at the 17th for 36 back.

Third best qualifier was Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw) with rounds of 74 and 71 for 145. Gabrielle had only two deviations from par in her second round – a birdie at the long eighth and a bogey at the 11th.

All the “usual suspects” were among the 32 qualifiers for the match play. Apart from Gabrielle Macdonald, the most dangerous to the hopes of Briggs and Dryburgh should be fourth seed Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) who kept her end up well with a 74 in the final tee-time trio for a 146 total, and the three who finished on 148: Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) (76-72), Hannah McCook (Grantown-on-Spey) (75-73), and title-holder Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies) (74-74).

But in a match-play there are always "floaters" whose form belies their stroke-play form. For instance Junior Vagliano Trophy player Clara Young (North Berwick & Gullane) (74-76 for 150), the 14-year-old East Lothian women's county champion, has demonstrated an aptitude for match-play at an older level..

Hannah Robb won a play-off for the last of the 32 match-play places after she had tied with Alexandra Tait and Eilidh Watson (Murcar) on the 162 mark.
