First Green

Positional shot with three wood or long iron to centre right of fairway, provides a short iron or pitch to a green which slopes away. A running approach landing short of the ridge at the front of the green often produces the best result in dry or downwind conditions.

Lothian Clubs Dominate Home Nations

By MARTIN DEMPSTER

LOTHIANS clubs dominated the quarter-finals of the Home Nations Junior Inter Club Championship.
Liberton and Craigielaw filled the top two spots in one event at Scotscraig, while Pumpherston and Gullane were the qualifiers at Downfield.
It was quite an achievement given that teams representing Leagues from Aberdeen, Ayrshire, Carnoustie, Fife, Glasgow, Linlithgow, Dumbarton, and Lanarkshire were also competing.
It also included both of Paul Lawrie’s sons, Craig and Michael, who were playing for Deeside.
Liberton, represented by Anthony Blaney, Keiran Cantley, Scott Finlay, Alan McLaren, Fraser Christie and Daniel Eardley, won their qualifier by 14 shots.
Former Scottish champions Craigielaw also progresed with a team comprising of Calum Cochrane, Lewis Ross, Stuart Blair, Oliver Duffy, Willem Kerr and Marcus Cullen.
Pumpherston produced an equally impressive display to win by 11 shots in Dundee, where Chris Curran, Kerr Anderson, Adam Loch, Andrew Loch, Calum Kelly and Mark McGeoch flew the flag for the West Lothian club.
On duty for Gullane as they, too, progressed to the last four were Alexander Wilson, Tom Simmonds, Graham Swan, Scott
Gillies, Duncan McLean
and Michael Williams.
The semi-finals are at Panmure on October 15, when Craigielaw will play against Pumpherston and Gullane will face Liberton in a medal matchplay format with the final in the
afternoon.

ELJG League Championships at Kilspindie – Results, Prizes & CSS

We are trialling a new Central Database of Handicaps system which will soon notify all of our players’ Home Clubs of their scores as “away” scores and this will take into account any Net Double Bogeys etc. However, if you have had a good score, and if you might have your handicap reduced, you should do that yourself before you next play in any competition. Well done on a great days golf! Photos will appear here shortly. Full report and scores are now below. Click on “100″ to show all the scores. NOTE – the CDH system has calculated the CSS for the U12 boys from the Ladies tees as 69. This, I believe is wrong as I calculated it to be 65. and I will investigate the reason for this. In the meantime, Convenors are recommended to ensure U12 players handicaps are reduced or increased using the SSS of 66 from the mens tees. Also, the PM scores for the U18 Boys have not been entered on the system yet. [Read More...]

Mens Scottish Amateur Championships – Grant wins!

Recent EL Junior Grant Forrest of Craigielaw is the Scottish Amateur Champion for 2012. Held over the great links at Royal Dornoch, 19 year old Grant was an unseeded player, but he played magnificently to reach the final with some big wins on the way. In the final, over 36 holes, Grant beat Richard Docherty by 9&7. Zander Culverwell (Dunbar), and Greg Smail, also of Craigielaw, both lost narrowly in the last 16. This is a huge event to win, from 256 entrants, and Grant, I am sure, will soon be rewarded with caps at International level. The ELJGLeague congratulates Grant on winning his 3rd National title!!! For a report see the SGU website.

Away draw at Tantallon

We nearly stole a win at Tantallon but Gary B held his nerve to slot a 4 ft birdie putt on 18 to deny Graham Swan a half and  us the victory. Solid win for Thomas Simmonds and Jamie dug deep to ovecome younger player giving 7 shots. Olly Ladbrooke was outstanding for a 1 hole win over Ross Wilson - chipping dead for birdie at the last to close him out.  Quality stuff and an excellent outcome against decent Tantallon side.

One way of drawing yourself to the attention of the Lothian’s selector’s and the coaching committee is to perform consistently in Open tournaments particularly those qualifying for Order of Merit points.

The boys Order of Merit is operated on a three yearly rota system with approximately 12 clubs being involved each year. The qualifying events are marked on the Lothian’s fixture lists and booklet and on the website.

The top ten players in each event score points as follows with points shared equally if there are ties –

A running total is kept and advertised at the counting events. At the end of the season the top ten players are awarded vouchers.

This year the Stephen Gallacher Foundation has also nominated the Lothians OOM as a counting event on its ‘Road to Dunbar’. Leading players will be invited to a grand final at Dunbar GC on the 30th September 2012.  In addition the SG Foundation will be taking a note of the U15 scores (Players under 15 years of age on 1st January 2012) and will be compiling an U15 Order of Merit which will also serve as a qualifying event in the ‘Road to Dunbar’ along with a Girls OOM. Updates on the Order of Merits will appear after each event on the Lothians website

If you require any further information on the Order of Merit then please contact me. Have a good season and if you do I will see you at Dunbar in September.
