Admittedly, my speech was the same as my golf has been this year (more bad than good, hopefully the more I win,the better I’ll get!) ;-), so I’d like to take this opportunity to improve on it in this blog. <br />I’d like to thank my partner Jim for having to steer me round the course and still being able to score 41 points! Imagine how we would have scored if I’d contributed Jim ;-). The first hole set the pattern for the rest of the round. I drove and managed to keep it on the fairway, Jim put our second to within 12 feet of the pin and I was lucky enough to hole the putt for a birdie. So it continued.<br />I’d also like to thank Archie, the rest of Seniors and the rest of the Juniors for taking the time to play the competition and making it an enjoyable day for all. As a community where golf plays a large part it is important to encourage young talent and enthusiasm for the game where we have some of the most beautiful courses in Scotland.<br /><br />Golf and golf coaching is taken forward by our Primary 5 children in Gullane Primary and the class teacher works alongside a trained golf coach to support and enthuse the children. <br /> <br />The golf coaching in Gullane Primary is well supported by a few keen parents who work well to promote the sport and encourage young players. The school hold golf matches for two trophies. The pupils play for these trophies each year. The last two years have seen a heightened interest in these trophies due in no small part by two parents who have supported the school. These trophies are now talked about and keenly debated throughout the summer term. Young, less experienced golfers are now given the opportunity to play in a short competition with fewer holes which encourages them to practise and take part. The Babe Zaharias Trophy was gifted to the school in 1964 and has been played for since that time. Babe Zaharias was an inspirational sportswoman and she won the Ladies Amateur Golf Championship in Gullane in 1947. Her husband returned to donate the trophy after she died as he was so enamoured of the area. I hope the pupils are inspired by her achievements. <br /> <br />The two parents actively support the youngsters and involve parents which is super. Gullane Golf Club liaise with the school and the clubgolf group. This allows the children to gain a feel for a golf club and spurs them on. We now have young 10 year old pupils as members of the golf club and working on their handicaps.<br /> <br />By promoting the game young people have the opportunity to develop their skills and focus on a sport which includes others. They develop and understanding of fair play and gamesmanship. They are focused on their individual targets and be able to support others. <br /> <br />I am eternally grateful to Mr McLean and Mr Walker and other clubgolf coaches for the support they have given the children in Gullane Primary and for passing on their enthusiasm for the game of golf. Successive Junior Convenors have put in a huge amount of work to provide opportunities and incentives for youngsters at every level. We now have a very active and successful Clubgolf scheme and a great programme of junior events and competitions. The fruits of this are evident: from the numbers taking up the game and the increased participation of girls in golf, to the performance of the junior team in the East Lothian league and the contribution of Gullane youngsters to national and even international competitions. Our girls vary in ability from low handicappers (who represent their country) to novice golfers and all are well served by the Junior Section. Our initial contact with the junior sport was the annual comp. on the (free to play) kids course , nothing like this exists down in Warwickshire where we were previously. Oliver has benefitted massively from Club Golf and for the last 2 winters the Lothians Junior Squad sessions , William is trying to follow in his footsteps and i have also been bitten by the golfing bug and trained to become a Club Golf coach this year.
