East Lothian v Loretto Golf Academy
On a sunny, windy night at Whitekirk, East Lothian continued their unbeaten run by narrowly beating Loretto by 4 games to 3. The match consisted of 7 fourball matches with the EL team fielding a number of our younger up and coming stars including Connor Farrell, Aaron Buchanan and William Ladbrooke (the latter 2 being only 10 years of age!) The boys played competitively but with fantastic respect for the game and their opponents and are a credit to their respective clubs and themselves and Ric Foulner passes on his best wishes to you all over the summer months. The only downside was that the last 2 games had to finish early due to a lack of light (some very slow play in one of the earlier matches.) Our thanks go to Iain McLean (Gullane) & Kevin Reid (Loretto) for helping in the organisation of the match, to the parents who helped and to Whitekirk GC for hosting us and making us feel very welcome. We will have at least 2 more matches to play before the end of the season and details will be forwarded nearer to the time.
7 Gullane members playing - Duncan McLean, Graham Swan, William Ladbrooke, Gary Brownlee and Scot Young for EL and John Dunn Butler and Alexander Wilson for Loretto

A great result for Gullane led by the inspirational duo of Duncan McLean and Coll Donaldson who defeated their low handicap opponents. Welcome to new team players Tom & Cameron Middlemass, Richard Yarrow and 10 year old William Ladbrooke !

Loretto win National Foursomes Championships Grand Final
Loretto School, Musselburgh have been crowned HMC National Foursomes Champions for 2010.
Over 90 independent schools from around the UK took part in the competition during the year, playing in six regional groups. The winners of those groups and last year's national winner, Millfield and runner up, Epsom, made up the eight teams competing in the Grand Final at Craigielaw at the weekend.
In the final, the teams, each comprising six players, were split into two groups playing in a round-robin format with the winners of the groups playing for the title. Loretto overcame Epsom 2-1 and RGS Guildford 3-0 on the first day and Truro 2-1 on the second day, before beating Millfield 2-1 in a very tense final, with two matches decided at the 18th. Each of the Loretto pairings recorded three wins out of their four matches.

East Lothian v Loretto Golf Academy
A very enjoyable and competitive match was played at Dunbar on Tuesday evening between a select team from East Lothian and the high profile Loretto Golf Academy. The course was in good condition despite the obvious effects of the recent storms and some good golf was on display at the different age groups. Both sides were missing a few of their top players ( eg Julie Yang warming up for the Ladies European Tour German Open and Grant Forrest studying for exams ) but both proved their strength in depth with Loretto's international squad coming out on top, albeit only on the last green of the last match.
Anthony Blaney put in a solid performance alongside debutant Peter Legget and had earlier sneaked a win for East Lothian in the top match with a sterling 25 foot putt on the testing final hole, with the Gullane pairing having been behind all the way. Sami Bouzabia & Alexander Wilson were also pleased to take the scalp of Scottish Academy players Callum Hill and Euan Bowden.

From a Gullane perspective it was great to have 6 members spread between the two sides. Peter Legget got his first taste of representative action playing his part in the top game. Alexander Wilson makes his debut for Lothian Boys on Sunday versus Perth & Kinross
Thanks to Dunbar for the use of their fine course - the venue of next year's Scottish Boys where Craigielaw player Grant Forrest will be looking to defend his crown.

Welsh Ladies Open Strokeplay Victory for Julie Yang
Sunday 02 May 2010
14-year-old Korean Julie Yang of Loretto School won the GUW Open Strokeplay at Southerndown with a 6-under-par total of 216.
It took a sudden-death playoff to settle the title after Nikki Foster of Pleasington had fought her way into contention with a superb 5-under-par round of 69. But on the first extra hole Nikki saw her second shot land on the bank just short of the green and roll down the slope away from the hole. Julie responded with a confident iron to the heart of the green and had no difficulty in securing her par and a memorable victory.
Rachael Watton was 22nd
Julie has played against Gullane twice with Houlston / Simpson having been proud to come away with a half in September whilst the Houlston / Wilson combo lost in March to Yang / Munsey

So Who is Julie Yang ?

So Who is Julie Yang ?
So who is Julie Yang? If she remains in this country, the 14 going on 15 year old may be about to make quite an impact on open tournaments.
Of South Korean extraction, Julie was based at Phoenix when she became the youngest ever winner of an American Junior Golf Association tournament in August 2007 - when she was only 12 years, 1 month and 8 days old!
In fact, in 2004, her CV credits her with winning the World Junior Masters in 2004. That would make her only eight years of age, so it must have been a Wee Wonders type of event.
If, like me, you might ask: "Why didn't Julie play in the Scottish Under-16 girls' open championship in early April because she enrolled at Loretto last September?" The answer to that one, very kindly supplied to me by Lesley Atkins' mother, is that Julie was in Thailand at that time.
The next question is: "Why didn't Miss Yang play in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur championship at Troon last weekend?"
Again, Mrs Atkins provides me with the answer: " Julie couldn't play at Troon because she was down at Oulton Hall, near Leeds helping Loretto finished second to Millfield in the Grand Finals of the Independent Schools Golf Assocation champion on April 25 and 26."
So, now you know more than most people about Julie Yang the 14-year-old who is the new Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play champion. If she doesn't go home - wherever home is - for the summer months, Julie could make quite an impact on the European women's amateur golf scene. She is among the entries for next month's British women's open amateur championship at Ganton Golf Club, Yorkshire.
Could Julie play for Scotland during her time at Loretto? Short answer: No. She would have to live in the country for 10 years to qualify on residential grounds.

Loretto Match
Conditions got the better of everyone - diving rain and wind are not the most fun golfing conditions. Shot of the day was Graham's drive at the first which went 250 yards ( ball 175 yds plus club 75 yds = 250 yds ! ) . Loretto had their noses in front on most matches but we'll claim a draw !
Thanks to everyone for turning up.
