The Babe Zaharias Trophy - Friday 10th June 2011

"The Babe" has been hotly contested by Gullane Primary School pupils since 1964. I am delighted to report that this year on Friday 10th June it is no different and that 10 pupils have stepped up to pitch their golfing prowess to compete for the cup over 18 holes. Also, as in previous years a smaller scaled down fun version played over 6 holes with 20 pupils will also be taking part on the 10th.

I would like to extend an open invitation to all the pro's and other interested parties to come along and introduce themselves to the up and coming golfing talent in Gullane, and maybe offer a few words of encouragement.

Presentation is normally between 6.30 and 7 with sandwiches and loads of chips. I'll be on the tee at no 3 sending the kids off if you want to join me

The Babe Zaharias Trophy is a strokeplay event which started in 1964 with the trophy being donated by George Zaharias after the death of his wife Mildred "Babe" Zaharias who was arguably the greatest female athlete of all time, being a double Olympic gold medalist and a professional baseball and basketball player. She was one of the founders of the LPGA and the first woman ever to play in a professional male golf tournament - long before Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie! In 1947 she played and won the British Ladies Amateur Championship in Gullane and was so taken by the village that she returned on many further occasions.

The 2009 Babe Zaharias Trophy  produced , we think, the youngest ever winner in William Ladbrooke  aged 8 who also won The Honor Bright Competition matchplay that year.William retained the "Babe " in 2010. Matthew Brady won the Honour Bright in 2010. Competition will be hot in 2011 as one or two others reckon they are also in with a shout !!

Babe Zaharias cup/Honor Bright Trophy

Dear Golfer,

Babe Zaharias born in 1911 was an American Athlete named by the Guiness Book of World Records, along with Lottie Dod, as the most versatile female competitor, achieving outstanding success in golf, basketball and track and field. She was also an expert diver, roller skater and bowler.

At the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic games Babe won 2 gold medals and a silver for track and field events, girl power or what!

In 1935, she began to play golf, a late comer to the sport but by which she would become most famous. In 1947 Babe traveled to Scotland to compete in and win the British ladies amateur golf championship right here in Gullane! Babe along with her considerable other achievements was also instrumental in setting up what is today the LPGA.

Sadly, Babe died in 1956 having achieved an incredible amount of respect in the sporting world. In 1964 her husband George Zaharias donated a cup to Gullane primary school in memory of his wife.

A call out for volunteer scorers has been widely received but there is still an opportunity to help. If you are interested in helping out contact Andy Walker on 01620 842135. Gullane GC will generously provide Food and Refreshments at the end of the competition in the main clubhouse.

The 18th of June is all about golf!!

The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfer, based at Muirfield GC have invited a number of Gullane primary children to take part in a coaching event on the morning of the 18th. Gullane GC professional Alisdair Good along with other GC professionals from East Lothian will be there to impart their considerable knowledge of the game of golf to the children.

Honor Bright Trophy

This trophy was donated to the school in 1922 by the then retiring Headmaster and has, with the exception of the war years been hotly contested ever since. This match play competition will take place on Gullane GC number 3 course over the next three weeks, culminating with the winner being announced on the 18th June. Mrs Tremmel (Gullane Primary Head Teacher) has handed out the format for the children who are taking part. Parents are advised that due to the American Kids European event taking place next week that timed slots will be hard to get so please book a slot as soon as possible. All games must be played before the 18th June.

Simmers Cup @ Haddington - Thursday

7 young Gullanites were playing at Haddington today in the annual age group event hosted  by Loretto. Gullane Primary School was represented by the youngest ever holder of both the Babe Zaharias and Honor Bright Trophies, William Ladbrooke ( P5 ) , rising girl star and Scottish Junior Tour player and US Kids entrant Charlotte Munro ( P6 ) , clubgolfers Matthew Brady and Gregor Griffiths ( P6 ) and Gullane GC Junior member Calum Black (P7) backed up by Gullane PS graduate Duncan McLean. Pro-son and fantasy golfer Brodie Good was also displaying his inherited talents coming top in his age group  for the Nippers.

There is vast enthusiam for golf at Gullane Primary School with record numbers signing up for clubgolf coaching with the army of volunteers and large entries expected for this year's "Babe" & Honor Bright Trophies - the future is very bright !!
