EVENING NEWS
Following four regional finals this summer, the leading 50 boys and 30 girls will take part on Sunday, with a strong Lothians' contingent heading to Perthshire. Leading the girls' challenge is 16-year-old Rebecca Edgar from the Glen, who won her qualifying event at Lothianburn back in August. "I'm really looking forward to the final at Gleneagles," she said. "There are a few East Lothian girls taking part on Sunday, so hopefully we can all spur each other on. I played really well in the Regional Final and it would be great to take that form on to the Queen's Course."
Rebecca will be joined by Lara Frostwick and Sarah Dunlop (both Gullane), whilst five-handicapper Gabrielle Macdonald (Midlothian Ladies) and North Berwick's Keren Ward, playing off eight, will start among the favourites in the girls' section.
North Berwick's Johnnie Peoples finished third in the Regional Final and will line up at Gleneagles alongside clubmate Finn Donaldson, whilst Glencorse also have two representatives in Stewart Goodfellow and Josh Anderson.
The Greenburn duo of Jorge Middleton and Callum Brown both played well to reach the final, and the Lothians' line-up in the boys' section is completed by Ross Millar (Whitekirk), Andrew McCraith (Turnhouse), Gary Brownlee (Tantallon), Kerr Anderson (Pumpherston) and Marcus Brown (Torphin Hill).
"The Junior Masters is a fantastic event as it allows boys and girls of all golfing abilities to play alongside each other, whether they play off three or 36," said Ross Duncan, the Scottish Golf Union's marketing manager. "Anyone with a handicap can compete and we've seen some great young players make a name for themselves since this event began ten years ago.
"Through clubgolf, Scotland's national junior golf programme, the number of young golfers has grown significantly and more than 38,000 primary five children were introduced to golf at school this year. The Junior Masters is the first step on the competitive ladder for many of these youngsters and it's great to stage the Final at Gleneagles, who do so much to support junior golf in Scotland."
The event is part of Dunfermline Building Society's three-year sponsorship of amateur golf in Scotland in addition to the Junior Club of the Year Awards. The Society's Fairway Savers account has also raised significant funds for clubs across Scotland.
The action gets underway on the Queen's Course at 8.30am on Sunday, with free admission for parents, families and spectators.
