LOTHIANS GOLF ASSOCIATION COACHING SQUADS 2009

Following the recent skill based assessments, we are delighted to annouce that

Oliver Ladbroke
Graham Swan
Alexander Wilson
Gary Brownlee ( representing Tantallon )

have all been included in the U15 Coaching squads being run by LGA over the winter. There are 14 boys from East Lothian overall so we have a good representation, reflecting the progress made by our boys over the past season.

The programme is demanding, involving fitness, pilates, mental skills and coaching - between now and March 2010. Alasdair Good is in the professional coaching team.

Very well done to all - hopefully the boys will reap the benefit next season and beyond.

Details of our own plans for coaching for Gullane members will follow.

Top Driving Tips

When you stand on the tee it’s important not only to visualise the shot you want to play, but to think about where you want the ball to land so that your second shot (or your approach shot on a par 4) is in the perfect part of the fairway, giving you a great line into the flag.

Lots of golfers just concentrate on making a good connection with the ball, rather than thinking strategically about where the ball should land off the tee, and this could be a wasted opportunity.

As for the technical side of hitting a driver, it’s important to get the fundamentals correct to play the right shot – ensure you have a solid posture (your stance may be slightly wider than with your irons). Position the ball just inside the line of your left heel (assuming you are a right-handed player), so you can sweep the ball off the tee. Also position a little more of your weight on the right heel at address, to promote an upward swing path.

The use of a modern titanium driver will help you hit more consistent drives. Although you may have a driver which says 10-degrees on it, the ‘dynamic loft’ of a modern club (at impact with the ball) may be slightly higher, again promoting a sweeping action, sending the ball away on an upwards swing path.

Best way to read a green:

Most golfers read the green by standing behind the putt before they play the ball. A useful way of improving your chances of putting success is to take a good look at the green as you are walking up to it, from about 40-50 yards away. Observe the contours from afar and this will help you understand the breaks more easily.

When you approach your putt, look at the line from different angles. Start from behind and then take a look at the putt from the sides too. This will often highlight slights changes in undulation that you’ve not spotted before.

If you often play the same course, it is also a good idea to draw the greens out on pieces of paper and form a little reference book – a bit like what the caddies do on tour. Mark different slop variances, potential hole placements and highlight the general contours of the green. All this local knowledge will help you read the green easier and help you hole more putts.

The clubgolf coaching programme has been running in Gullane for 5 years now, enthusiastically backed by a band of 12 volunteer coaches and both Gullane GC and Gullane Ladies GC who provide support and facilities. It is introduced through Gullane Primary School with every child in P5 taking part in firstclubgolf with plastic clubs and then those who are interested progressing to the real thing with regular coaching from the volunteers as well as from Gullane GC pro Alasdair Good and team. Coaching take place on Sunday at 4.15 pm for those in P5 / P6 with the pros taking over for those in P7 and beyond and running sessions on Mondays and Friday afternoons. We currently have nearly 50 children in the programme aged from 9 -14 with just as many boys as girls . Various competitions and trips are also organised including events at Craigielaw South Course, North Berwick Kids Course, Dalmahoy, Gleneagles and Muirfield for the Senior's Open in 2007.

East Lothian Council fully supports this initiative and employs Kate Green as Junior Golf Development Manager.
