Lothian Boys Championship 2011 - Qualifying

"The Lothians Boys Championship Qualifying event was reduced to 18 holes as players took 5 hours to complete the course with balls veering off into the whins with gay abandon. The decision was vindicated as the conditions worsened in the afternoon.

16 players with scores of 84 or better go through to the knock out stages starting at 5pm on Tuesday evening. The leading scores of 77 came from Euan Bowden (The Glen) and Fraser Thain (West Linton) with Euan taking the Lindsay Trophy on the better inward half. Willem Kerr (Craigielaw) was awarded the best Under 16 prize with his 79, Euan Bowden having already won the main trophy. needless to say the CSS was +3 (Reduction only). Some of the younger players are to be congratulated in completing their rounds where other more experienced players 'gave up' and posted 'no returns'. (Or maybe they ran out of balls!!!)"

Gullane comment - it was no joke on the Braids - conditions were nigh on unplayable with putts being blown off greens and balls in the air disappearing from view, left and right - most Gullane members were out later and the last group took 4.5 hours plus to play 13 holes waiting on many tees before deciding enough was enough after 14 - I don't blame them !!

However - congratulations to Gullane Junior members  Alexander Wilson , Alasdair Simpson and Fraser Thain who battled through - good luck in the knock-out stages. Commiserations to the other 9 who played !

Lothian Boys Win 2010 Area Team Championships at Peebles

06/06/2010
The Lothians Boys team of Grant Forrest (Craigielaw), Anthony Blaney (Liberton), Graeme Duncan (Kingsknowe) and Fraser Thain (West Linton) won the Scottish Boys Team Championship at Peebles today. After some excellent golf they were ahead by 5 shots after the morning foursomes with a 2 under par score of 138 (Forrest and Blaney 66, Duncan & Thain 72).  The Scottish Boys Champion, Grant Forrest, lead the team home with an individual score of 72, that was matched by Fraser Thain with Anthony Blaney 74 and Graeme Duncan 76 not far behind. The team beat Lanarkshire by 4 shots with South just 1 shot further back.

Junior Convenor Paul Gibson, ably supported by his assistant John Allan, was delighted with the result following a lot of careful preparation work in which Dean Robertson was a major contributor.

Two Gullane members playing key roles !! And Forrest lives within 2 miles

LOTHIAN BOYS REPORT

Simon Fairburn follows in Ronnie Shade's footsteps

FROM THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS WEBSITE
By Martin Dempster
Craigielaw's Simon Fairburn retained the Lothians boys' championship at the Braids last night – the first player to achieve the feat since the legendary Ronnie Shade nearly 50 years ago.
In an exciting final, Fairburn completed back-to-back wins as he beat Liberton's Anthony Blaney on the last green after being three up with four holes to play.
Shade won the event three years in a row from 1954-56 while only two other players have retained the title in the event's history – E L Thomson (Royal High) in 1929-30 and W G Gardner (George Watson's) in 1947-48.
Fairburn, pictured, runner-up in this year's Scottish youths' championship, was made to work hard to join that exclusive club after getting off to a flying start in the conclusion to this year's Golf Finance-sponsored event. The 18-year-old pitched dead for a conceded birdie at the first and also won the third, hitting his approach there to four feet for another birdie.
Blaney replied with a hole-winning birdie at the fourth, where his opponent hit his tee shot into a gorse bush, before squaring matters when he won the sixth after holing from 12 feet for a par.
A longer hitter, Fairburn drove the seventh and eighth to win both of them with birdies and looked to be well in control after he went three up at the ninth, where Blaney missed the green and failed to get up and down. A blocked drive from Fairburn allowed his opponent to win the tenth with a birdie-4 and Blaney holed a tricky five-footer at the par-13th to remain two down.
Fairburn then won the 14th, where he pitched to about two feet for a birdie, but Blaney had done well to make it to the final and wasn't about to throw in the towel without putting up a fight. At the 15th, it was his turn to produce a great pitch that set up a hole-winning birdie and he then holed a curling ten-footer to win the 16th with another birdie.
After three-putting the 17th, Fairburn's lead had vanished completely but Blaney missed his chance to put the defending champion under pressure when he hooked his tee shot at the last into the gorse.
Fairburn duly drove the green and, after lipping the hole with his 30-foot eagle attempt, was conceded the hole.

Tomorrow Fairburn, who lives in Galashiels, will be wearing Borders colours and Blaney is in the Lothians line-up in the Dunfermline Building Society Boys Area Championship at Peebles.
Blaney joins forces with Grant Forrest, Fraser Thain and Graeme Duncan and it's unlikely that any of the other 15 teams taking part will have prepared better for the event.
"We have prepared the best we possibly can," said Lothians junior convenor Paul Gibson. "(Former European Tour player] Dean Robertson held a couple of performance and coaching days with our boys down at Peebles and he was a revelation. We are going to Peebles with high hopes and any team that finishes ahead of Borders will be in with a shout."
That's due to the fact that, in addition to the on-form Fairburn, the hosts have two players, Craig Howie and Daniel Flannery, in their team who are playing on home soil tomorrow.

Blaney v Fairburn in final of Lothians' boys' championship

GULLANE JUNIOR MEMBER DOING THE BUSINESS !!

FROM THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS WEBSITE

By MARTIN DEMPSTER

Liberton's Anthony Blaney stands between Simon Fairburn and a successful defence of the Golf Finance-sponsored Lothians boys' championship at the Braids.

In last night's semi-finals, Blaney squeezed past Fraser Thain of West Linton at the 19th, while Fairburn beat his Craigielaw clubmate Ewen Donaldson 3 and 2 in a match that was a lot closer than the score suggests.

One down with four to go, Thain won the 15th and 16th, both with birdies, to get his nose in front then holed a good five-footer for a half at the short 17th, where Blaney followed him in from slightly closer.
Thain then drove into 'The Graves' at the last and lost that to a par before he three-putted from 18 feet at the first extra hole, missing a three-footer for par to allow Blaney to go through.

Fairburn's home club is Torwoodlee in Galashiels but he's also a member at Craigielaw, allowing him to enter this event. Both he and Donaldson were out in 33 and, what's more, they were all square with five holes to play. Fairburn, who finished second in the Scottish Youths' Championship at Monifieth earlier in the year, then won the 14th with a birdie before a par-4 proved good enough for him to also take the 15th.
Piling the pressure on his opponent, Fairburn then hit his drive pin high at the 16th, where Donaldson found the whins on the right, took a drop and then thinned his pitch through the back.

Having already proven he can go the course and distance in this event, Fairburn is certainly the favourite for tonight's final, which tees-off at 5.15pm.
But Blaney is possibly the most improved young player in Capital golf over the past year or so and he'll certainly be no pushover.

Results:
Semi-finals:
S Fairburn (Craigielaw) bt E Donaldson (Craigielaw) 3 and 2.
A Blaney (Liberton) bt F Thain (West Linton) at 19th.
