QUALITY FIELD FOR IRISH U18 GIRLS' OPEN STROKE PLAY CH/SHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Dublin: Curtis Cup team member Leona Maguire and twin sister Lisa, the current European Ladies Individual Champion, will lead the Irish challenge at the second staging of the Irish U18 girls' open amateur stroke-play championship at Roganstown Golf and Country Club, Swords, Co. Dublin this weekend.
The 54 hole tournament has attracted the cream of Europe’s underage golfing talent as players vie for valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking points. Roganstown - winner of Best New Golf Course 2006 and 2007, Golf Ireland Magazine - measures 5,841 yards, with a par of 72 and will provide a tough examination of competitors' stroke-play skills, with greens that will test any golfers ability over the two days.
The Maguires, Leona playing off plus 5 and Lisa off plus 4, are joined by current Irish U18 Internationals Jessica Carty (Holywood), Ariana Coyle Diez (Elm Park), Chloe Ryan (Castletroy), Jean O’Driscoll (Muskerry), Hannah Henderson (Ballyclare) and Olivia Mehaffey (Royal Co Down Ladies).
The Irish challenge will face stiff opposition from the high quality international field which includes 28 French players including members of the European girls championship-winning team, Manon Molle and Claudia Chemin both playing off plus 1.
England and Scotland also have representatives in the field with England’s Gabriella Cowley arriving fresh from a win at the Scottish Under 16 Championship at Strathmore while the Scottish panel includes Clara Young who was a member on the GB and I U16 Junior Vagliano team last year. Players from Norway, Sweden, Germany and Iceland are also represented in the field.
The 72 competitors will play 36 holes on Saturday with the top 50 players qualifying for the final round on Sunday.
The ILGU will also use the Championship to give Junior High Performance panellists Niamh McSherry (Lurgan), Lisa O’Shea (Shannon) and Niamh Ward (Lurgan) valuable experience playing among Europe’s elite.
