Round Up SGU JUNIOR TOUR & HENRY COOPER

GREIG MARCHBANK WINS SGU JUNIOR TOUR EVENT AT CARDRONA

By ROSS DUNCAN SGU Media and Marketing Manager

Dumfries and County’s Greig Marchbank eased to an emphatic four-shot wire-to-wire victory in the SGU Junior Tour’s 72-hole event at Macdonald Cardrona near Peebles. The 16-year-old celebrated his call-up to the Scotland boys' team earlier in the week with an impressive performance on the former European Challenge Tour venue, finishing with a six-under par aggregate of 282, four clear of Liberton’s Anthony Blaney.
The South youngster opened with a two-under par 70 to share the first round lead with Jamie Savage (Cawder) and stretched clear of the pack with an excellent four-under par 68 to hold a five-shot lead going into the final two rounds today.
Marchbank, who reached the last eight of the Scottish Boys Championship at Dunbar, posted his third sub-par round of the weekend with a 69 however Blaney closed the gap to four with a fine 69. Going out in the final group, both players could only manage three-over par 75s as the rain closed in, leaving Marchbank to record his maiden Junior Tour win and further stretch his lead at the top of the SGU Boys Order of Merit standings.
Blaney, a member of the Lothians team who won last weekend’s Dunfermline Building Society Scottish Boys Area Team Championship, continued his fine form to clinch the runners-up spot on 286, two-under par while Mount Ellen’s Eamon Bradley fired a final round 69 – including an eagle two at the par four second - to finish in third place on 289.
Jordan Milne (Elgin), third in the second SGU Junior Tour event at Rowallan Castle last month, secured fourth spot at Cardrona with a four-under par 68 in the final round, which included a haul of six birdies, one clear of Barassie’s Euan Walker whose aggregate of 294 gave his fifth place.
Lee Morgan, also a member of the victorious Lothians boys' team, finished in style with a six-under par 66 – the best round of the weekend – for 295 and a share of sixth place alongside joint first round leader Jamie Savage, who faded with a final round 80.

THE 2011 TOURNAMENT

England Junior wins International Masters
Toby Tree from Worthing Golf Club in Sussex won the 2011 Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters. Toby proved that consistently good, topped with a little bit of brilliance is just what's needed to take the lead when competing with an international field over 4 rounds of golf.2011 Champion Toby Tree
Danish Junior Nicolai Cetti Engstrom took the first round lead after a stunning 66. His round included six birdies and an eagle, and only two bogeys on each nine stopped a perfect round.
The pair of Jimmy Mullen from Royal North Devon and Jamie Clare from Burnham & Berrow held second place just one stroke behind on 67. Both players carding seven birdies and two bogeys.
It was all change at the top on day two when Angus Carrick of Douglas Park Golf Club took the lead with a second round of three under par in torrential rain and gale force winds – the weather so bad that play had to be suspended for an hour. When Angus finished he signed for a second 69 bringing his total for the two days to six under par. The rest of the field was hot on his heels, lead by Gavin Moynihan of Donabate Golf Club who was just one shot behind at five under par. In tough conditions it seems to have been consistency that counts, with the top 10 going into day 3 separated by just three shots.
Bradley Moore of Kedleston Park Golf Club signed for the best score of the day, carding 4 birdies with no mistakes to post a 4 under par 68. A dramatic improvement on round one’s 78 which sees him make the cut at +2.
37 players made the cut to compete for The Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters blue jacket over a further 18 holes on Sunday 19th June. A stunning 5 under par from Haydn Porteous of South Africa moved him up to share the top of the leader board with Gavin Moynihan from Donabate in Ireland at 7 under par for the tournament. Toby Tree, also made his first move, returning 4 under par to move into joint second with Jack Hume from Rathsallagh, Ireland.
The final round delivered a cliff hanger. England under-16 international and current England under 18 squad member Toby Tree, stormed into the lead with 5 birdies over the first ten holes, finally signing for his second consecutive 4 under par to return a total of ten under for the tournament. Haydn Porteous and Gavin Moynihan chased Toby throughout, both finally posting two under par to return 9 under par for the tournament and take joint 2nd place.
Toby said, "I am really pleased with the result after a frustrating season when I've been close but never quite there." Toby then went on to focus on the work he still wants to do on his game to keep progressing! Toby is a recipient of a Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters Charitable Trust Bursary, and the Trust's first bursary recipient to win the tournament and to be awarded the Junior Masters Jacket.
