Lothian Boys Championship 29 May - 3rd June 2011

The event

The Lothians Boys Championship takes place in June each year at Braid Hills No 1. An event for boys who are under 18 on January 1, it is open to players whose home club is affiliated to the Lothians Golf Association. Its roll of honour makes for impressive reading, the winners including Andrew Oldcorn (1977), Ian Young (1978) and David Inglis (1998). The tournament commences with a 36-hole quaifying stroke-play event, with 16 qualifiers going forward to compete in a match-play stage. The leading qualifier gets the Lindsay Trophy, with the champion holding the Speirs Trophy for a year. The latter is the second oldest of the trophies held by the Lothians Golf Association, having been first contested in 1925. The championship was, in fact, originally organised by Edinburgh Town Council. It ran the event until the mid-1960s, when it asked the Lothians Golf Association to take over that role. The event allows the Lothians Golf Association to work together with the City of Edinburgh Council in their joint aim of promoting junior golf in the area. 

2010

Simon Fairburn with the Speirs Trophy at the Braid Hills

After just scraping into the match-play phase, Simon Fairburn, representing Craigielaw, made a successful defence of the title, becoming the first player to achieve that feat in the modern era. On this occasion, he beat Liberton's Anthony Blaney by one hole in the final.

2011

The qualifying for the event will take place at Braid Hills No 1 on Sunday, May 29, with the match-play phase being held from Tuesday, May 31 until the final over 18 holes on Friday, June 3.
