At 8am on Friday, October 1, someone will be experiencing one of the most pressurised moments in golf - the opening shot of the Ryder Cup. They will no doubt feel nervous but will handle it in the same way as every shot they hit, by following their own routine. This will feature two stages: • Plan the shot • Execute the shot The first stage may take a variable amount of time, but the execution should always be the same, typically 10-15 seconds. Club players are often tempted to take longer than normal over a tough shot but this will create tension and may cause a poor execution. Define and always repeat your routine and it will become your protection against pressure. |
Putting under pressure Many championship-winning putts have been holed with trembling hands, it may be the same at Celtic Manor. This illustrates that the best players feel nervous and they have learned to deal with it. Try this drill if you would like to hole more putts under pressure. Hole three putts from three feet, then three from five feet followed by three more from seven feet. If you miss, start again at the beginning. Make sure you stay until you have holed nine on the trot. As ever if you would like to discuss any part of your game please don't hestiate to drop by the shop. |
