Scottish Champion of Champions
Wondering where Fraser Thain, Lesley , Clara and Rachael are this week-end ?
Junior Champions Set for Duke's Test
The curtain comes down on the Scottish Golf Union’s domestic playing season this weekend with fifty-seven of the country’s leading youngsters competing in the Junior Champion of Champions event at The Duke’s, St Andrews (Sunday 1 November).
Thirty-nine boys and eighteen girls form the starting field, comprising of this year’s junior champions at National, Area and County level across Scotland, which will be contested over The Duke’s for the first time.
Defending the boys’ title will be Bonnyton’s Andrew McLachlan, who took the honours at Kingsbarns twelve months ago with a superb five-under-par 67. The 17-year-old Scottish Boys internationalist will be looking to end his season on a high but faces tough opposition from a strong group of emerging young talent.
Among his challengers will be firstpointusa.com Scottish Boys Stroke Play champion Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) who has enjoyed a fantastic season on the junior circuit. The 16-year-old was a double winner on the Junior Tour with victories at North Berwick and his home course before clinching his maiden national title with an impressive five-shot win at Ladybank.
St Andrews’ Ewan Scott will be another name to watch on Sunday, having made history earlier this year by becoming the first Scot to lift the English U14s Boys Championship. The young Fifer also finished runner-up in the Scottish Boys U14s at Largs in July and will be hoping to make local knowledge count.
Ailsa Bain (Peebles) will be one of the favourites in the girls’ event, having won the Scottish Girls title at Lanark this summer before going onto record two out of two singles wins in her Home Internationals debut in Lancashire.
Defending champion Carly Booth misses out, having qualified to play in the Faldo Series Grand Final in Brazil, but SLGA Performance Squad members Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies), Lesley Atkins (Minto) and Rachel Watton (Mortonhall) take their place in the line-up.
David Scott, Manager at The Duke’s who helped the SGU launch the event two years ago, is looking forward to welcoming the youngsters this weekend:
“We are very proud to support the Scottish Junior Champion and Champions and it will be great to see so many talented young golfers playing at The Duke’s. The course is in great condition and will provide the golfers with a testing but very enjoyable challenge.”
“Bringing together the various champions from across the country, both boys and girls, is a great way to round off the season and celebrate the achievements of our junior golfers.” he added.

VISUALISATION FOR SUNDAY - THINK ABOUT THOSE PUTTS ROLLING IN !
Hi All ! Taking just a little time (and I do mean very little time) to visualise improvements in your game pays off. Y. E. Yang had visualised how he would play against Tiger many times, so that when he got the chance he was ready. Read on to learn how to do this most effectively.
| |
Some people think that they can't visualise, but we all think in pictures to some extent. For example, if I say 'dog', you don't say 'd-o-g' - dog. You see a dog. It can also be hard to see yourself holing putts if you've been used to missing them for a while! In this situation it helps to imagine yourself stepping out of your body and watching an image of yourself (or even someone else) sinking putts, rather than trying to imagine the ball going in from your normal view over the ball. Similarly some players find it hard to imagine the outcome of a shot. No problem - just remember a good one instead! This counts as visualisation too.
| |
Here are a couple more simple but important tips to make your visualisation the most effective: 1. In terms of technique choose a good player to copy. It's probably worth using a mirror to check that how it feels as you copy them too. 2. As I said at the start you don't need or want to spend hours visualising. Do it for just 1 to 3 minutes, as this has been shown to be the ideal amount of time. Give it a try with one part of your game and let me know how you get on!
| |
My new pre-game CD 'Play like a Tiger' is now available at just £14.99 (incl. P&P). You can also get an MP3 version for just £9.99, if you'd rather just download it to your iPod. As with all my products it's short and easy to apply to your game, so that you see results quickly. "Your CD has been such a great help!" - Kylie Walker after winning the silver medal at the European amateurs. Now available via my website! Click here for some more information on how it will benefit your game and order your want your copy now! My CD and book are great Christmas presents for golfers too!
Then get in touch to book a series of coaching sessions now to really improve your game or buy one of my books - perhaps the one called 'Letting Go of Anger' if you need more patience! We're all looking for extra value so you'll be pleased to know that it will help improve your personal life and career too! Craigielaw win East Lothian Juniors County Cup
By DAVID WARREN
East Lothian Junior League secretary
This knock-out alternate shot event was played on Thursday and Friday at a Haddington course in fine condition. The format consisted of two foursomes matches, the winners being decided by aggregate holes up. The first match was a scratch game and the second was a handicap game. Gullane were seeking a “treble” having won the County League and Strokeplay events already.
Tantallon, one of the favourites, were defeated 1 up in the first round by the Musselburgh Old Team, but they in turn were beaten 1 up by Gullane. Gullane therefore reached the final where they faced Craigielaw, recent victors in the Scottish Junior Team Championship. Craigielaw had convincingly beaten Kilspindie and North Berwick on their way to this final.
In superb weather, the two Teams proceeded to do battle. In the handicap game, Duncan McLean and Greg Houlston of Gullane, receiving 1 stroke, struggled to find their form and were soon well behind, mainly due to some fine putting by Gabrielle MacDonald and Jack Dow of Craigielaw.
The real fireworks happened in the scratch game which was between four fine players, some of whom are Scottish Internationals and all of whom have a scratch or near scratch handicap. Greg Smail and Grant Forrest represented Craigielaw whilst Gullane were represented by Lesley Atkins and Rachael Watton. This was a real battle between boys and girls, and the only advantage the girls had was that they played off the Ladies’ tees. However, they were frequently still ahead of the boys after the drives. There was considerable good natured “banter” between these two sides and the match was played swiftly and in fine spirit.
The scoring in this game was excellent, the boys gaining an early lead by having birdies at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes. When the overall aggregate match was decided on the 16th green, Greg and Grant were 5 under par, but were only 2 up on Lesley and Rachael! Despite the spectators wanting this exhibition of golf to continue, the match had to end there with Craigielaw having won by 6 & 5 overall.
Haddington Captain Andrew Douglas presented the trophy to the winners. Haddington have always been great supporters of Junior Golf in the County, and Jim Simpson, their Junior Convenor, hopes that their own Team will soon be challenging for trophies again.

More Scottish Success in USA
The Scotsman : 26 October 2009
By Nick Rodger
RUSSELL Knox scored the second Scottish win on American soil in a week when he topped the standings in stage one of the US PGA Tour's qualifying school in Florida.
The Inverness golfer followed up Martin Laird's maiden tour triumph in Las Vegas last Sunday by powering to victory at the St Johns club with a six-under 66 as his bid to join his fellow Scot on the main circuit next year got off to a flying start.
Knox, who has earned over £60,000 on the third-tier NGA Hooters Tour this season, finished with a 15-under aggregate of 273 and won by three strokes from Chris Kirk and Irishman Chris Devlin.
The Jacksonville University graduate had been four shots off the lead with a round to play but he surged to the front with a five-under outward half to lead the 22 qualifiers into next month's second stage.
"I'm more prepared for q-school than I was last year, where I didn't play well at stage two," said former Scottish youths' cap Knox, who fell at the second hurdle in 2008.
"I've got a great support group behind me and I've been playing better in every part of my game this year."
While Knox passed his first test on the road to the lucrative PGA circuit, there was disappointment for Cardross-born Ross Bain who missed out at Dayton Valley in Nevada.
The Dubai-based Scot needed to mount a final round charge to force his way into the top 22 but he could only muster a one-under 71 for a four-under 284 and finished seven shots outside the qualifying zone.
Elsewhere, Gary Nicklaus, son of 18-time Major winner Jack, failed to make the grade at Port St Lucie in Florida with a 285.
And New Zealand's Danny Lee, the winner of the European Tour's Johnnie Walker Classic as an amateur earlier this year, missed out at Stonebridge in Texas with a four-round aggregate of 295.

CRAIGIELAW'S rising golf stars have won a top Scottish junior event for the third time in four years, earning themselves a trip to Spain early in the New Year, writes MARTIN DEMPSTER.
The East Lothian club triumphed once again in the Scottish final of the Home Nations Junior Team Championship, this latest success in the event coming at Westerwood.
The Home Nations tournament involves in excess of 1,500 golf clubs throughout Sco
tland, England, Wales and Ireland and the competitors at Westerwood were all either winners or runners up of junior leagues throughout Scotland.
The Scotland final was televised for the first time and will be broadcast as part of a programme to be shown on Sky Sports next February.
Cardross set the clubhouse target with a team total of 372 and that looked a tough score to beat until Craigielaw, who qualified as runners up in this year's East Lothian Junior League, came in with a winning aggregate of 366.
Gabrielle MacDonald led the way with the best net score of the day, a 69 playing off six, while two-handicapper Douglas Maxwell had the best gross score of the day with 72. They were ably supported by Ewen Donaldson (73), Grant Forrest (74) and Greg Smail (80) with Jack Dow's 82 being the discounted score.
This year's Junior Team Golf Home Nations Championships will be staged over five days at La Torre Club in Spain.
Gullane, the East Lothian Junior League winners this year, finished fourth on 282 at Westerwood, where Edinburgh Junior League representatives Liberton and Prestonfield posted scores of 399 and 413 respectively.

County Cup Update - The Final Hurdle ....
Gullane fell at the final hurdle on Friday in the County Cup at Haddington - dashing their hopes for a glorious treble of East Lothian Junior League championships this year.
The team came through their morning semi - final against Royal Musselburgh on the back of Rachael and Lesley being 11 up against the the the Royal Muss scratch pairing ! Great golf !
Craigielaw overcame North Berwick in the other semi-final.
The girls continued their fine form in the afternoon but suffered a three hole pinsplitting birdie blitz from Grant Forrest and Greig Smail from the 2nd to the 4th to go three down and never quite got onto level terms despite themselves being 3-under the men's par against a 5-under 5 * performance from the boys when the match came to an end at the 16th with them 2 down.
Our handicap pairing of Greg and Duncan never really got going all day .... nuff said.
So near but so far - but congratulations to all the team squad for a fantastic year and special congratulations to Gordon for his immense contribution to the successes of the team. We are the County Strokeplay Champions and the League Winners after all - no mean feat !!

Boys Team Scramble: Tuesday 20th October 2009
The second of the October holiday competitions was held at North Berwick’s children’s course on Tuesday and this time if was the turn of the boys. 27 boys representing 7 East Lothian clubs formed 9 teams of 3. Teams were captained by a boy with a handicap or in S1+ and were made up of a mixture of clubs so that the boys could meet other golfers from other clubs. Each team had to use 3 drives from each of their members, which added some extra decision making into the works! Despite the cold and windy conditions the boys returned impressive scores - well done all. Thanks again to North Berwick Golf Club for use of their children’s course and also to all the coaches and parents that helped assist on the day. Results are below:

GIRLS IN GOLF - GULLANE TO THE FORE !
Girls in Golf Team Scramble: Monday the 19thOctober 2009
32 girls from across East Lothian and Edinburgh got the chance to meet Catriona Matthew - the 2009 Women's British Open Champion – at this week’s Girls in Golf event. Catriona very kindly gave the girls her time - answering lots of questions, signing lots of autographs and joining the girls for photos.
It looked first thing like the weather was going to get the better of us but thankfully it dried up just on time. All the girls enjoyed the event - the last of the season for the girls. I hope meeting Catriona will encourage all the girls to come back next season and until then keep practicing.
Thanks to North Berwick Golf club for use of their fantastic children’s course. Thanks also to all the coaches and parents that helped on the day – really appreciated as always. Results can be found below:

clubgolf Islay !
Local Hero – Ron Goudie taking golf to the children of Islay
Richard Winton
0 comments
Published on 16 Oct 2009
Ron Goudie lives next door to a distillery, can see the Irish coastline through the windows of his home and spends much of his time playing golf in a clement climate.
So asking why he chose to relocate from the south- east of England to Islay is akin to inquiring about the activities of bears in the woods.
“I didn’t need much arm-twisting,” admits the golf professional, reflecting on his first year on the inner Hebridean island after moving from Surrey.
The words may be delivered in estuary English but the sentiment is Scottish. Goudie is Glaswegian, having lived the first three years of his life in Bishopbriggs before the family moved south with his father’s work. An unlikely poster boy, perhaps, for the year of Homecoming, but there is no doubting the credentials of a man whose zeal for his nation is matched only by the enthusiasm he maintains for golf.
“It’s a tragedy for me that I’ve got an English accent,” he deadpans, childhood holidays in Scotland having failed to bolster his burr. “If you put the rugby on, there’s only one team I’m supporting. People have accused me of being English but if that was true I’d have had to kill myself.”
If you put the rugby on, there’s only one team I’m supporting. People have accused me of being English but if that was true I’d have had to kill myself.Ron Goudie
Not that his nationality matters much on Islay, where the population is split along simpler lines; either you’re a local or you’re not. Yet despite Goudie, wife Emma and son Alasdair falling into the latter camp, people in the south of the Argyll archipelago have quickly accepted the family as valued members of the community thanks to the 44-year-old’s efforts in bringing golf to the island.
This time last year, Machrie Golf Club barely had enough junior members for a fourball but now in excess of 35 kids regularly attend weekly coaching sessions as part of the nationwide clubgolf programme, which aims to create the opportunity for every nine-year-old in the county to play the game. While he is keen to praise the local support, the interest – which eclipses that received by most mainland clubs – has been fostered by the presence of Goudie, who has opened up his tutorials to all junior members.
That emphasis on youth is mirrored in the reasons behind the family’s relocation to the island. After spending 15 years as the professional at the club in Epsom where he learned the game at the age of seven, Goudie felt it was time to move on because as well as the business delivering diminishing returns, he was spending less and less time with his 11-year-old son.
Having been rejected for positions throughout the mainland at various times over the past few years – “There was always the problem that I didn’t sound like a Scot” – the family visited various towns on the west coast before alighting on Islay, which had not had a golf pro for many years. An earlier phone call had already established that the services of a PGA-qualified coach would be welcomed, albeit in a freelance capacity to work with hotel and corporate guests as well as club members, and within hours of arriving a decision was taken.
“We just knew because it had that special something,” Goudie explains. “We actually stayed in the house we now own, which was originally the excise office house for the Laphroaig distillery, so it’s right next door, on the rocks overlooking the sea. From where I’m standing I can see Rathlin Island and the Irish coast behind it so it’s little bit different from living cheek by jowl with thousands of others where we used to live in.”
Not that he’s entirely used to the remoteness yet. “It is a bit of a journey – two-and-a-half hours on a ferry and more than two hours drive from Glasgow to get to the ferry – then there’s the problem of not getting places because the ferry has been cancelled. That’s not something that crops up if you’re trying to go to Milngavie . . .”
Transport problems also briefly hindered Goudie’s most ambitious scheme, to take clubgolf to Colonsay. An island of just more than 100 inhabitants between Islay and Mull, the boat only runs on Wednesdays during the summer but the pro was determined that the kids should not miss out and travelled across for five of the six holiday weeks, with only the weather preventing him completing the set.
That can-do attitude is also prevalent in plans to turn their home into a bed & breakfast guest house, a move that will allow the family to earn a living and Goudie to pursue a peripatetic lifestyle as a self-employed coach. Emma, a qualified caterer and hotelier, will take charge – “I’ll be doing what she tells me, all the normal things a fella does” – while her husband continues to work on a game that has improved substantially now that he now longer has to worry about the committee meetings and paperwork that eroded the enjoyment of life as a club professional.
That, though, is not the height of his ambition. “The way I look at it is that the world is now my oyster and doors are opening up to me,” Goudie explains. “There’s only a finite number of kids on the island but I’d love to get them all involved and increase the membership at Machrie. Longer-term, a lot of people come to Islay for the whisky and bird watching but I’d like to make it a real destination for golf and if I keep knocking on doors, hopefully, one will open.”
