Bradley Neil heads five Scottish qualifiers at English McGregor Trophy

Blairgowrie's Bradley Neil headed the five Scots who survived the halfway cut in the English Under-16 open stroke-play golf championship for the McGregor Trophy at South Moor Golf Club, Durham today.
Neil had rounds of 71 and 73 to be lieing joint sixth on level par 144 - five shots behind the two-stroke leader, Jack Hermeston (City of Newcastle) (71-68 for 139) with two rounds to be played on Thursday.
Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie) is tied eighth on 145 with scores of 74 and 71.
Alex Wilson (Gullane) (75-74)and Connor Syme (Dumfries and Co) (72-77) are joint 34th on 149.
The last Scottish qualifier, right on the limit of 150, was Ewen Ferguson (Bearsden) who is tied for 40th place with scores of 72 and 78.
Justin Rose won this title in 1995 and Edoardo Molinari in 1996.

Scottish Girls - Round 1

Eilidh leads after Round 1

Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) leads by one shot from Connie Jaffrey (Troon  Ladies) and by two from Gemma Dryburgh (Beaconsfield) going in to the second and final qualifying round of the Scottish Girls' (Close) Championship. Eilidh, who was a member of the Scottish Girls team that competed in the European team Championships in Sardinia last week shot a level par round of 71 over Glenisla Golf Course. Defending Champion, Lesley Atkins (Gullane) is also well placed after a 74.  ( As is Clara )  The top 32 players will qualify for the match play Championship and the next16 players will qualify for the Ansley Reid second flight after tomorrow's second qualifying round (Wednesday 13 July). All in a Greenkeeper's Day - ask Stuart Duff !

Royal St George's will provide the backdrop for a compelling drama this week. Sure, the principal actors will breeze in for a few days and steal the limelight, but the unsung heroes are the stagehands responsible for the magnificent set.

The head greenkeeper is 44-year-old Graham Royden, who has been at the club for 19 years and worked as an assistant at the 1993 and 2003 Opens at Sandwich.

With the world's sporting gaze focusing on his handiwork this week he's clearly a very busy man, but he took time out to speak to BBC Sport.

Here's what he had to say:

"I'm still smiling. Actually, I'm pretty relaxed. We're in a good place. The rain has helped in the last month. The rough is on the move in a good way.

"I've tried to talk to all the players who came here to practise in the last few weeks and we've had really positive feedback. They say the course is a fairer test than 2003 when the rough was the talking point. Now, it's tough enough without being punishing but we'll be looking to keep a lid on it.

"The putting surfaces are perfect and very pure and I'm absolutely delighted with the condition of the whole course in general.

"Ernie Els called it the 'best presented course going into an Open', which is a major coup for me. I'm from Deal, just down the road and it was always my ambition to be the head greenkeeper here. To actually have achieved that goal is pretty special.

"For this week we've widened the fairways on the first, 17th and 18th because eight years ago only 27-28% drives found the fairways. They are very undulating and it was very firm so the balls were getting nasty kicks into the rough. We've put in new tees on the third, seventh, ninth and 15th to add about 100 yards. We've also reduced the fourth to a 495-yard par four from a par five, which will toughen the course up slightly.

"Work began about two years ago when we started rebuilding the faces of the bunkers - we've done 37 in all. Last year the R&A came down a couple of times and this year we've had three or four visits.

"Since May the members have had to carry astro turf mats with them to hit second shots off - they've had to contend with a lot and have been very patient. And because of the recent dry weather the course has been closed to all non-competitors for the last three weeks.

"From Sunday, the alarm will go at 3am. No grumbles, though, it's the Open.
At 3.30am I'll brief the team, who are based in portacabins on site. It's not hard to motivate them, either. This is what they've all worked extremely hard for.

"I'll have my usual 13, plus 10 volunteers from local courses assisted by four more mechanics and 10 more Royal St George's permit holders, who will replace divots on the fairways every evening. And we have another 60 from Bigga (the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association) who are staying at Canterbury University and will be bused in later - 10 of whom will rake all the bunkers before play and then they will each follow an individual match.

"We're on course by 4am, hopefully looking to finish all the mowing by 9am. We'll all have breakfast together and then the team are stood down but they're still on call in case there are any last-minute adjustments needed.

"Some will go back to bed, some will watch golf or just relax. I'll be on call with a walkie-talkie but I'll also get to go out and see how the course plays.

"At 4pm I'll meet Peter Dawson and Grant Moir of the R&A and go through the twice daily tests conducted by Alistair Beggs and his team from the Sports Turf Research Institute to work out our plan for the greens.

"This is adjusted daily on the basis of height of cut, frequency of cut and whether we roll. Sometimes we look at a single cut and roll but if it's windy it could be a single cut and no roll. We'll look at the weather forecast and take into consideration the test results for green speed, moisture content, smoothness and firmness.

"For the players one of the biggest challenges is that it is not a traditional in and out course - no two holes are in the same direction so on the tee you have to take the wind into consideration. But that's also a real challenge from the greenkeeping aspect.

"We have to keep an eye on the green speed in some of the more exposed spots as we don't want a repeat of St Andrews last year where balls started to oscillate. We have had some days of flat calm recently but that is very rare. Hardly a day goes past without a gentle sea breeze, mainly from the south west though it can change direction two or three times during the day.

"On links courses we look for a speed of 10.5 to 11 on the stimpmeter but we err on the side of caution.

"The pin positions are directed by the R&A in consultation with one of my staff. We know roughly where they're going and we've been protecting the greens for the last two months. The members unfortunately have been playing to some quite nasty pins - the pros certainly wouldn't like those spots this week.

"The team will reassemble at 5pm for another briefing and we head back out at 5.30pm ready to prepare the course in the evening. We'll work through until dusk, which is the back end of 10pm.

"My biggest fear would be someone vandalising the greens but we've got 24 Ghurkhas camping out overnight on the course to protect the greens. No one is allowed on any putting surfaces unless they've got a pass. I don't know if they're armed but I wouldn't like to tackle them in the dark.

"We're then back in position on the course ready to go at the first chink of light

"I just hope we don't get too much adverse weather. I don't want the wind to blow too hard and rain for all four days. We're looking for fair golfing conditions, positive feedback and a worthy champion.

"The first thing we'll do on Sunday night is all get our photos taken with the champion and then I'll take the crew to the pub. They'll deserve a drink by then. I don't think they'll have a problem staying awake if the boss is buying. Seems only right, doesn't it."

GEMMA HEADS FOR GLENISLA AFTER SUCCESS AT THE BERKSHIRE

Aberdeen teenager Gemma Dryburgh will tee off this morning on a high in the first qualifying round of the Scottish Under-18 girls' championship at Glenisla Golf Club, Alyth. 

Today she played in the pre-qualifying round of the Ricoh Women's British Open championship at The Berkshire Golf Club, Ascot - and a par round of 72 secured a place in the final qualifier at Panmure Golf Club for the major championship at Carnoustie later this month.

Then she set off a high speed to travel the 400 miles or so north to the Perthshire venue for this week's girls' championship.
Dryburgh has recently flown home for the summer from Florida where she is a successful student, on and off the golf course, at the IMG David Leadbetter Academy, Bradenton. An experienced player in American junior events, Gemma has yet to make a name for herself in her native land - but that could all change this week at Glenisla.

Playing off one of a handicap - her American handicap is +2, Dryburgh should go close to winning the championship - she reached the semi-finals last year - and is determined to impress the SLGA selectors enough for them to award her her first Scotland cap for the girls' home internationals at Gullane early next month.
Certainly Dryburgh's form over the last week or two has been impress - third in the Bridget Jackson Bowl, top-10 in the Astor Salver and now one of the qualifiers from a big field at The Berkshire today.

Standing between Gemma and the Under-18s title - the leading 32 players after the 36-hole eliminator - go into the match-play stages - are players of the calibrie of Kilmacolm's Eilidh Briggs, Renfrewshire women's county champion and beaten finalist in the Scottish women's amateur championship at Machrihanish in May, and the rest of the Scotland team just back from the heat of Sardinia in last week's European girls team championship:
Lauren Whyte (St Regulus), Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey), Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies), Clara Young (North Berwick & Gullane Ladies) and Alyson McKechin (Elderslie). 

Tournament director Claire Hargan reports that, like almost every other golf course in Scotland, Glenisla is very, very wet and will play every inch of its 5,803yd with little or no run on the fairways. The par is 71 but the Standard Scratch 73. 

Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies) is the defending champion and last year's beaten finalist, Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) is also in the field again.

+The Glenisla course was originally built and opened by the Glenshee Lift Company in 1995 as a summer business to give their ski trade employees some work in the off-season. Then that company went bust, the course was bought by the Somerville family who have invested heavily in the project and plan a housing development in the area.

TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FOR YOUNGSTERS AT PORTPATRICK G C

It is with great delight I can now announce that the 2011 Stanley Morrisson Team Championship will yet again be held at Porptarick Golf Club on Tuesday, August 16. 
The Stanley Morrison Trust has generously sponsored the event which will come to a total of £5,000. This is once again, a phenomenal gesture and it is very much appreciated.
It will again be a three-person event with under-12 and 14-year-old categories with two Stableford scores to count. There will also be a team skills challenge event running alongside the main event. 
It is free entry to the event which will include food, prizes and coaching. This year's coaches will be Dean Robertson and James Erskine with the Stirling University Golf Team assisting. The idea is to create a fun, competitive learning enviroment for all involved and it will be an excellent event. We would like to invite as many golf clubs as possible to enter a team 
I think you will all agree it is a fantatic event to come to the South-west of Scotland and is as far as I'm aware the only event of its type in the country. I would ask for as much support from the local area as possible to ensure this event continues for years to come.

GULLANE RESIDENT THIRD IN EUROPRO !

SHAUN MCALLISTER FINISHES JOINT THIRD, EARNS £2,100

McAllister, pictured left, shot rounds of 68, 70 and 70 for an eight-under-par total of 208, finishing joint third behind first-time winner Paul Reed (Bristol and Clifton). Shaun, who was Scottish boys' open stroke-play champion at Alloa in 2006, birdied the ninth, short 13th, 15th and short 17th in his final sub-par round, dropping shots at the short 11th and 14th. It was his highest ever finish on the EuroPro Tour and the £2,100 reward was his biggest payslip so far as a pro. He's on a learning curve and this will give him a huge confidence boost. Ben Kinsley from St Andrews is the new Scottish Boys Under-16s champion after carding a superb four-under par closing round of 65 to hold off the challenge from Newcastle’s Jack Hermeston.
The 15-year-old Madras College pupil, who posted a 68 in this morning’s second round to move into contention, finished with a four-under par aggregate of 203, one shot ahead of Hermeston, who saw his 30-foot birdie putt at the last just slip past.
Kinsley got his final round off to a flying start, hitting a wedge to within a foot of the first hole to set up an easy birdie, before rolling in a 25-foot birdie putt at the second to move to two-under. An unlikely birdie followed at the seventh after he caught a tree trunk at impact with his 7-iron in the process of hitting his approach shot to 10-feet, which snapped the shaft of the club, but he calmly rolled in the putt for a superb three.
A further birdie three followed at the tenth and despite dropping a shot at the 12th, he made birdie at the par five fourteenth hole, before paring home to clinch his first national championship.
“I played great all day, hitting it really well off the tee and holing some good putts. That’s one of my lowest ever rounds and it’s nice to do that in a big event like this. I got off to a good start this afternoon which was important and thankfully my wrist recovered after hitting the tree with my club at the seventh,” said Kinsley, coached by Gary Forrester in his first year of the Scottish Golf Academy programme.
“It’s been a good year so far having reached the semis of the Scottish Boys Championship. My goal is to keep progressing and hopefully I’ll do well in the McGregor Trophy down in England next week.”
Hermeston, a member of the Northumberland junior team, posted rounds of 69, 68 and 67 to clinch the runners-up spot, one shot clear of Barassie’s Euan Walker, who fired a superb final round of 64, the lowest score of the week. Walker, who opened with a 73 yesterday, was an incredible 8-under par for his last 24 holes.
The first three boys all broke par with their 54-hole totals.
Overnight leader, Italian Luigi Botta, finished level par in fourth place after rounds of 72 and 69.
Kinsley’s win continues Fife’s dominance of amateur golf events in Scotland this season, while the Kingdom’s golfers will be keeping a close eye on 1996 Scottish Boys Under-16s champion Peter Whiteford from Kirkcaldy, who currently shares the lead in the Barclays Scottish Open.

Eildih Briggs (Kilmalcolm), runner-up in the Scottish Ladies’s Amateur Championship in May, will be aiming to mark her last junior season with victory in the Scottish Girls’ Championship at Glenisla Golf Club, Alyth next week (Tuesday to Saturday, July 12 to 16).
Lesley Atkins (Gullane) will be defending the title she captured at Eyemouth last year – and beaten finalist Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) is also still young enough to mount another challenge.
Briggs, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency at Machrihanish, currently heads the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association’s Girls’ Order of Merit and she is heading Scotland’s challenge in this week’s European Junior Championship in Sardinia.
Her five team mates – Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), Hannah McCook (Grantown-On-Spey), Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie), Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) and Clara Young (North Berwick) – will also have sights set on success at Glenisla. 

A total of 69 players have entered the Girls’ Championship and the list includes last year’s beaten semi-finalists in Aberdonian Gemma Dryburgh and Craigielaw’s Gabrielle Macdonald, who is the first reserve for the European Championship.

Briggs and McKechin are the back markers with scratch handicaps and the Championship consists of two round of strokeplay qualifying with the top 32 going through to the matchplay stages. The 18-hole final takes place on the morning of Saturday, July 16.

GLENBERVIE JUNIOR OPEN FOR BOYS AND GIRLS ON JULY 18

The Glenbervie Junior Open is being held on Monday, July 18. There are scratch and handicap prizes for boys and girls with trophies being awarded for the best scratch score in each category.

I am particularly keen to encourage more girls to take part in the competition. Glenbervie is in great condition at present with very fast greens and being a former venue for the British Boys, Scottish Girls and Scottish Professionals’ Championship I am sure that everyone who plays in our Open will thoroughly enjoy the course. The Open is taking on an international feel with entries already from the US and Croatia. It  costs £5 to enter and anyone interested  can either download an entry form fromhttp://www.glenberviegolfclub.com/golfClub/OpenCompetitions.asp?PageName=OpenCompetitions or e-mail me at juniors@kengoodwin.com .

The Glenbervie Open is the first event of the Falkirk Festival of Junior Golf which comprises the junior opens at four of the golf clubs in the Falkirk area. The Falkirk Golf Club Junior Open is on Wednesday 20^th July; Grangemouth Golf Club Junior Open on Thursday 21^st July and finally the Falkirk Tryst Junior Open on Friday 22^nd July. Each junior open costs £5 to enter. The Festival is open to all juniors with CONGU handicaps – they don’t have to be residents of the Falkirk area.

The Festival has its own website http://ffojg.blogspot.com and anyone who wishes to enter will find details of dates, venues etc and an on-line entry form. Starting times and results will also be shown there in the future. Players can also enter individual junior opens through the web site even if they don’t want to play in all the competitions in the Festival. Alternatively they can e-mail me their details with the opens they wish to play in.

Last Call for Loretto School Scottish Boys Under-14s Championship Entries

Tomorrow (Thursday 7 July) is the closing date for entries for the Loretto School Scottish Boys Under-14s Championship taking place at the picturesque Aberdour Golf Club in Fife on 11 – 12 August.

The event is open to boys aged under-14 (on 1 January 2011) with a handicap limit of 18.4, giving a chance for the country’s most promising youngsters to shine on the national stage. Since its first staging in 2001, the championship has grown in popularity, attracting entrants from the other home countries as well as across the continent, and will be played over 36-holes for the first time this year.

Entry costs £22 with a maximum field of 84, played alongside the Scottish Girls Under-14s Championship.
