MIDLOTHIAN GOLF GIRLS MAKE IT FIVE

IN A ROW AT CUTHBERTSON CUP
Midlothian Under-18 girls golf team have won the Cuthbertson Cup for the fifth year in a row. They beat Fife 3 1/2-1/2 in the final at Ratho Park while East Lothian beat Stirling & Clackmannan 2-0 in the play-off for third place in cold and wet conditions.
In the semi-finals, Midlothian beat Stirling & Clackmannan 4-0, and Fife had a 2 1/2-1 1/2 win over East Lothian.

Teenager Matteo Manassero shines on Masters debut !

Manassero happy to be improving Italian teenager Matteo Manassero etched his name into Masters history in some style on the final day at Augusta. The 16-year-old amateur, the youngest to ever compete at the Masters, birdied the 18th to finish four over, earning a fine reception and the Silver Medal. "It will definitely help me to be comfortable with this crowd and understand I can compete with these guys," said Manassero. The youngster will turn professional at next month's Italian Open. His score put him ahead of the likes of former Masters winners Zach Johnson and Mike Weir as well as Retief Goosen and Sergio Garcia, a player who made his own memorable debut at the Masters back in 1999. Manassero, the only amateur to make the cut at Augusta, also shone at the Open last year, winning the Silver Medal at Turnberry in recognition of his achievement as the highest finishing amateur. "Today I think I played really good," said Manassero, the first amateur since 2005 to play in the final two rounds at Augusta. "I can't play much better than this. I maybe left on the course some birdie chances. I made two bogeys, but I finished with a good birdie - that's a good memory." Manassero earned his place at Augusta by becoming the youngest-ever winner of the British Amateur Open last year. The fervent AC Milan fan will try to secure his place on the European Tour through seven invitations he has been offered, with the secondary Challenge Tour and the qualifying school as a possible fallback.

SLOW PLAY !!

Since last autumn the Committee has received an ever increasing number of complaints regarding slow play over the No 1 course, not just in qualifying Medals but also during general weekend play. The numbers are such that they cannot be ignored and measures will have to be introduced to improve the situation which if not addressed will only deteriorate further.

At last weekend’s Spring Meeting all competitors were advised that their round should take no more than three hours. Sadly, times ranged from 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 38 minutes with an average time of 3 hours 20 minutes, this on days when the weather could scarcely have been better and the rough well cut back.

Gullane Golf Club has a long tradition of two ball play be it foursomes or pairs and being known for playing all forms of golf at an acceptable pace. I know full well that we all wish this to continue long into the future. In an attempt to address the situation and after due and careful consideration please note that with immediate effect the Committee has introduced the undernoted target times for any round of golf which will be used as the benchmark for monitoring the speed of play.

4 ball                                    3 hours and 40 minutes

We have been gathering information on the start and finish times for Medals over No 1 and this will continue for at least the next two months for further analysis and review. We are therefore looking for everybody to work together as one big team to reduce the number of complaints regarding slow play.

Tips to help Speed of Play

1.             Provisional Ball - If you think you may have lost the ball or hit it out of bounds, immediately play a provisional ball, after informing your fellow competitors, as nearly as possible to the spot from which the original ball was last played. (Rules of Golf 27-2)

2.             Your Place on the Course - Keep up with the group in front at all times. Your place in the field is behind the group in front, not in front of the group behind. If you are looking for a ball wave the next group through immediately you see they are ready to play.

3.             Speed - If a group loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group.

4.             Course Management – At the green place your clubs near to where you will walk to the next tee and mark the scores at the tee while you wait for others in your group to drive. Keep up a good pace when walking between shots.

Pitch Marks

Our Greens are regarded as some of the finest in East Lothian and beyond. To assist our greenstaff to help keep them in top condition it is essential that any pitch marks are repaired as soon as possible. In accordance with the Rules of Golf you are allowed to repair any pitch marks on the green before putting.

US KIDS EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE

U.S. Kids Golf Now Accepting Applications for 2010 European Championship, Gullane, Scotland

Each year, many of the best young golfers from Europe and around the world descend upon East Lothian County, Scotland, for the prestigious U.S. Kids Golf European Championship. In this, our third year, 500 players from 40 nations are expected, with over 400 entered to date.

The Championship will be three rounds of stroke play, held June 1-3, 2010, on Scotland’s historic golf courses in East Lothian:
Gullane No. 2 and No. 3, Craigielaw Golf Club, and Longniddry Golf Club.

On June 4th, the Van Horn Cup will be held on Gullane No. 1, pitting the best finishers of Europe vs. those of all other countries, the International Team.  Two Europeans and two International players will be selected to represent each team based on their three day total score.  Only 18-hole players will be able to participate in the Van Horn Cup.  Europe maintains a 2-0 lead.

To participate in the European Championship, please fill out and submit the attached European Championship application.

Registration information will be sent to accepted players within ten business days of your application.  Please be reminded entries will be on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is filling quickly.

Wales, winners of both their matches so far, will go into their final day match against Scotland (one win, one defeat) as favourites to clinch the title in this Under-16 boys' quadrangular match at Nunspeetse Golf Club in the Netherlands.
Scotland, winners by 7-5 over the host nation on Day 1, lost 8-4 to Ireland today.
Wales, having beaten Ireland 8-4 on the opening day, made it two wins out of two with a 7-5 scoreline over Netherlands.

Scotland Open with Boys Quadrangular Win

Scotland’s U16s boys team opened with an excellent 7-5 win over hosts The Netherlands on the first day of the Boys Quadrangular Series at Nunspeetse Golf Club.

Bradley Neil, Callum Hill, Anthony Blaney and Greig Marchbank all took maximum points as the young Scots took the foursomes 3 -1, before sharing the spoils in the afternoon singles 4 -4.

Craigielaw’s Grant Forrest is the 2010 Scottish Boys Champion after claiming an impressive 3&2 victory over Scotland team-mate Ian Redford this afternoon at West Kilbride.

Forrest, who won the firstpointusa.com Scottish Boys U16s Championship last year at Largs, continued his love affair with the Ayrshire coast by collecting Scottish golf’s flagship junior event. The East Lothian star becomes only the second player to achieve the national U16s and Scottish Boys Championship double, more than 20 years after Colin Fraser’s feat in 1987-88.

“I’m thrilled to win,” said 16-year-old Forrest. “It’s been a long, hard week, playing nine rounds of golf and it’s still sinking in. I hadn’t really been thinking about the double but it’s a nice achievement to have. I had great support from the Craigielaw members who were out in force today, as well as my family”.

“We actually stayed in the same hotel in Largs that we used when I won last year so that brought back some good memories last night. My goal at the start of the week was to win and when I reached the quarter-finals I knew I had a really good chance. It’s great to be the Scottish Boys Champion.” he added.

The match was evenly balanced for most of the morning, with Redford seizing the initiative early on by going up at the fourth, but his lead lasted only until the eighth, when a bogey brought the match back to all square. A birdie at the 11th put Forrest in the lead and the consecutive birdies on 13 and 14 – a repeat of his semi-final yesterday – gave him a two-hole lead at the halfway stage.

Redford could not get his putter going in the afternoon, missing several chances and Forrest’s superb iron play kept the match in his favour. He went three up at the 23rd with a par and despite losing the 28th after he pulled his tee-shot out of bounds, bounced back to take the 31st and 33rd holes, sandwiched by a Redford birdie three at the 32nd. A half in pars at the 34th was good enough to give Forrest the win, another national championship for the Craigielaw club.

A disappointed Redford said:

“My putting and my iron play let me down today as I drove the ball great. The ball just would not drop in the hole for me. I managed to hole a couple of good ones at the end of the morning round which I thought would get me going, but it wasn’t to be the case.”

“I can take a lot of positives from the week however. It’s the best I’ve played in match play and I’ve improved year on year every time I’ve played the Boys Championship. Grant played the better golf on the day. He’s a great lad and an excellent golfer.”

Scottish Golf Union Events Manager Euan Mordaunt paid tribute to the host club:

“West Kilbride Golf Club have been superb hosts this week. The course stood up fantastically well despite all the rain and was in excellent condition. We would like to thank all the staff and members for looking after us and looking forward to returning for the next Championship.”

Scottish Boys Update - Thursday / SLGA U16s

The sharp end of the Scottish Boys Championship has been reached with a strong line-up of the country’s most talented youngsters set to battle it out in tomorrow morning’s quarter finals at West Kilbride.

Jack McDonald and Conor O’Neil led the way this afternoon as both players sped to victories in the opening matches. McDonald needed just two hours to dispose of English Boys champion Euan Scott (St Andrews), playing some superb golf which included a run of an eagle and two birdies from the eleventh hole, before closing his game out at 5&3. O’Neil picked up where he left off this morning to record an impressive 5&4 win over Liberton & Gullanes ’s Anthony Blaney, having raced to the turn in three-under par.

Elderslie 15-year-old Alasdair McDougall, who has seen his handicap come down from eight to three in the last year, holed a 10-foot birdie putt to see off Angus Carrick on the final green to set up a quarter-final tie against Craigielaw’s Grant Forrest.

McDougall, who became a member of West Kilbride last year, admitted he was a huge fan of the course:

“My game has come on leaps and bounds since I joined West Kilbride. It’s made a massive difference being able to play all year round and the green keeping team to a great job in keeping the course in such good shape in the winter. I’ve learned to play a wide variety of shots, hitting the ball lower into the wind which has really helped me this week.”

The reigning Scottish U16s champion sank a dramatic 40-foot putt on the 17th green to go one up in his match against Liam Johnston (Dumfries & County) and held on to halve the last and seal victory.

Scotland Boys international Calum Stewart (Brora) overcame Troon Welbeck’s Callum Beveridge by a 3&1 margin, with Beveridge’s club mate Charlie Macneal also coming unstuck at the fifth round stage as he lost out by 3&2 to Ian Redford.

The final match of the last eight will be between the youngest player left in the Championship, Lawrence Allan (Alva) and Falkirk Tryst’s Jamie Lynch. Allan, who won his club championship aged just 12, staved off Scott Gibson with a 2&1 win as Lynch stormed past young Borderer Simon Fairbairn with a comfortable 4&3 victory.

Allan, who will play for the Scotland Boys U16s side in The Netherlands next week, said:

“I came into the Championship playing well having finished third in the SGU Winter Series and knew I had the game to do well. I’ve been competing in the event since I was 13 so it’s good to progress from my last couple of years. Hopefully I can keep it going tomorrow against Jamie but we’ll wait and see.”

A full field of 102 competitors completed the first round of the 2010 Scottish Under 16's Championship today, 8th April.  Bronte Law, Bramhall and Elizabeth Mallett, Sutton Coldfield Ladies shared the lowest gross score of the day with 2 under par scores of 70.  Brogan Townend, Pleasington is only one shot off the leaders with Jessica Carty, Holywood another shot further back.  The leading Scot after the first round is Jessica Meek, Carnoustie Ladies who shot a gross 73 off a handicap of 7.  Her nett score of 66 was the lowest nett score of the day. Scoring Zone - Forget Failing From Five Foot

The shorter putts can sometimes be the trickiest. Here’s a quick drill that will help you make more putts from five foot and in. Place five or six golf balls around a hole, all within five foot of the cup. If you putt the first one, move on to the second, if you sink that, move to the third and so on. But if you miss one, go back to the beginning and start again. See if you can get all six in a row. To add a bit of spice to the drill try to find a hole that is on a slope so you have to take the break into account as you go round the circle. Short Game Academy in Association with Alasdair Good

Have you tried....... It may seem unconventional but your hybrid can be a great weapon in certain situations around the green. The hybrid is perfect if you find your ball up against a collar of rough as having a broad sole helps it to glide through the grass where sometimes the leading edge of an iron can get caught and stop the club, resulting in mishit shots. The trick is to use the hybrid like a putter, coming in from a shallow swing, keeping the club low with a pendulum movement, and pop the ball out of the rough and rolling along the green towards the pin.

"Highlight of the day was Andrew Borg’s spectacularly holed wedge for eagle at the final hole to knock out Fraser Thain (West Linton) in a dramatic finale to their match. The 17-year-old Elmwood College golf student, whose home club is Penwortham in Lancashire, was two up with four to play before Thain birdied 15 and 16 to level the match. The next hole was halved in pars and with Thain just 10 feet away with his approach shot, Borg landed his 96-yard approach shot in the hole to clinch a memorable victory."


Otherwise of the Tantallon boys, both Calum Hill and Chris Low wins one and loses one so bow out but Euan Bowden still going strong as are Grant Forrest and Ewan Donaldson of Craigielaw. 

ALASDAIR GOOD'S SHORT GAME ACADEMY

 When visiting the practice ground I would always recommend that you work as hard as you can on your short game and in particular from 80 yards in mainly because that is where you will save shots during any round. Don’t just smash balls with the driver for half an hour!

Take the time to test yourself by simply looking at different shots from certain yardages e.g. 3/4's wedge from 80 yards, 1/2 sand wedge from 40 yards or bunker shots from around the green. Hit between 5 and 10 shots for each and see how close you get to the flag. Make up a simple scoring method and see how many points you score.

If you feel your simple testing uncovers some inconsistency's in your short game there could be a number of different reasons;

1. You don't practice enough

2. Your technique may be flawed

3. You don't have the correct equipment in terms of a gap or lob wedge

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH LADIES GOLFING ASSOCIATION
Lesley Atkins (Minto & Gullane ) and Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie) will be heading the home challenge at the SLGA Scottish Under-16 Open Strokeplay Championship at Strathmore Golf Club near Alyth on Thursday and Friday, April 8-9.

Last season, 14-year-old Lesley underlined her potential by reaching the quarter-finals of the Scottish Ladies’ Amateur Championship at Southerness, while Ailsa is the reigning Scottish Schools’ Champion. Both youngsters played for Scotland in last year’s European Girls’ Team Championship.

Lesley was the leading Scot when she finished fourth in the Under-16 Open last year, and the prestigious Championship has attracted an exceptionally strong entry from south of the border.
Woburn’s Lauren Taylor is the back marker with a plus two handicap, while Bramhall’s Bronte Law is plus one and Brogan Townend (Pleasington) plays off scratch. Lesley and Ailsa, who was 16 in January, both play off three.

The Championship is over 36 holes with one round on Thursday and another on Friday.

Medal 14th April - No 2

The next Medal is on Wednesday 14th April on No 2. Tee time 12noon. There isn't a 6 hole option this time. Please telephone register with Starter in advance so we have idea re numbers

 

Hopefully we will have another good turn out.

Greg played really well today at West Kilbride

"Yeah I played really well. Short game was really what saw me through though. I holed most of my putts." 

Unfortunately our Captain Peter Legget lost to young opponent Fraser Davren from Williamwood in Glasgow by one hole - must have been tight so no disgrace. Alasdair Simpson also lost.

Playing with Richie Ramsay !

Alasdair Good got a phone call from Richie Ramsay, the Aberdonian golfer who won the US Amateur Championship a couple of years back and who won the South African Open last year. Richie has a house near Musselburgh and was looking for a game at Gullane.   I had just finished playing in the medal with Graeme Currie when Alasdair went to find a member to host him. Richie was great to play with as he is the perfect example of someone to look up to. Everything about Richie's game was was fine tuned, he struck the ball crisply, swung the club at a nice reasonable pace on every shot and has a great touch on and around the greens.   From what I saw he keeps things simple and consistent throughout the round. Ritchie was a delight to play with and even though he was not playing his best ever golf he did still manage to beat me !  Graham Swan 4th April 2010

Congratulations to our winner Freddie Neden - a fine 61 !!

A good turn out overall and some excellent golf on Easter Sunday - and very good scoring !! Lesley A led the way with a gross 71  !! But 13 nett scores in 60s and some great gross scores two 74s ( well done Jamie & Coll )  , a 75 ( well done Scott ) and a 76 ( good going Duncan )  is good going . Handicap reductions for 6

Congrats too to the younger golfers who turned out.  Mollie, Annabel and Euan  played 6 holes , James Chalmers and Matthew Brady also completed 18 hole cards for handicap and Calum, Graeme and Fraser played well and had fun.
