A late finish at North Berwick - even the Seagull was asleep ...ZZZ

Our Under 14 team travelled along the road to Tantallon on Sunday to see if they could emulate the successes of their elders. The format was handicap fourballs and there were several long and close matches - with plenty of time to explore the bumps and borrows of the fabulous West Links - matches took over 5 hours due to the build up of play in front - both locals and visitors...... zzzzzzzzzzzz .......and certainly not our kids !

There was excellent play from both sides, many of whom have come through the clubgolf coaching schemes in North Berwick and Gullane . Anyway, the result was

World Hickory Open hits Gullane

Following the inaugural tournament in 2005 at Musselburgh Old Links, venue for 6 Opens in the late 19th century, the World Hickory Open 2006 moved 10 miles east to Craigielaw Golf Club, Aberlady for its first PGA supported event. A full field of professionals competed in a Pro-am and the following day’s Open. Craigielaw continued to host the event through 2006, 7 and 8. In 2009 the event moves to the historic golf course at Gullane.

Unique Stretch of Golfing Country

Gullane No. 2 as with its companion courses 1 and 3 sits mainly astride Gullane Hill. Close by is Luffness and among others nearby are East Lothian gems of Craigielaw, Kilspindie, Muirfield, Archerfield, The Renaissance and North Berwick West. This is quite a unique stretch of golfing coastline.

The Reverend John Kerr in his golfing guide (1894) wrote “There is no quainter or romantic spot than Gullane. Nor are there finer links anywhere ; try them for yourself. And what with hill and valley, fresh air and fine scenery, say if you can bring me anything to match my beloved Gullane.”

Bernard Darwin also put in his pennyworth in his book of great British golf courses (1910). He writes “There is probably no other golfing centre that is quite so good as Gullane”.

The course was built in 1898, designed by Willie Park Jr. and at the time was considered to be tougher than No.1, its yardage being over 6,000 yards. One of the great features of the course is its excellent short holes, particularly the 11th with its magnificent view and tricky club selection. Today it measures 6,244 yards from the medal tees which should prove to be quite a test for the best hickory players.

Events 

There are events in the first part of this week at Musselburgh Old and Craigielaw after which there will be the The World Hickory Practice Day on Gullane No2 on Wednesday 23rd Sepember , The World Hickory Pro-Am on Thursday "4th September and the World Hickory Open on Friday 25th September - see poster for details. A good field of professionals and amateurs will be competing for a prizefund of £17,500

FInal Medal and Prizegiving - 27th September

The Gullane Golf Club and Gullane Ladies Golf Club Junior Prizegiving takes place next Sunday, the 27^th of September. That day we have the added, if very welcome, distraction of having a junior team contesting the Scottish team championships at Westerwood which may mean that timings will come under some strain.

The final junior medal of the summer season takes place on No.1 at 12.30 that day and the prize giving starts at 5.30 in the main clubhouse.

Snacks and drinks will be available in the Members Clubhouse to competitors coming off the course and there will be putting contests run by the professionals team to fill in the time while we wait for the later starters to complete their rounds and the team to return.

At around 5.30 we will present the prizes for the year in the joint ceremony with Gullane Ladies juniors at which a buffet will be served.

All  parents are most welcome to come along to the prize giving and if you are planning attend please help the caterers by e-mailing me with a note to say how many of your family will be there.

Loretto Golf Scholarships

Golf Scholarship assessments take place on 7th and 8th October at Craigielaw Golf Club and Loretto.

The Golf Academy offers a number of golf scholarships each year to boys and girls from the age of 12. Scholarships are available to outstanding golfers or good golfers who show exceptional potential.

Candidates will need to have an established handicap and a report will be required from an external coach or professional. They will also be assessed on both their existing and potential golf attainment levels and their academic aptitude.

TOM GREY IS OK !

Hi Everyone – please excuse me communicating with you all en masse – it has been a bit hectic! Thank you all so much for your telephone calls, cards, visits etc – we were so touched that everyone showed so much concern. Tom came out of the Infirmary today and is in great spirits and definitely on the mend. We go back for x-rays on Friday morning. The cast is a full leg job but will be reduced to half leg after a month. We were so lucky to have Hamish Simpson on the touch line when the injury happened. His professionalism took all the stress out of the situation – we are really grateful for all his input both at the time and afterwards.

Tom has at last tried on one of the pair of new Puma boots he bought prior to the game on Saturday! He’s pretty pleased with it – so I guess he is intending to play again. He has asked to be on the touch line on Saturday morning!

Again thank you all for your kind wishes. We will be in touch.

LOSE THRILLER TO ENGLAND

Scotland’s golfing schoolgirls drew 4 ½-4 ½ with their England counterparts but England’s schoolboys beat the Scots boys 10-8 in the annual schools international golf match, hosted this year by the Scots at Westerwood Hotel’s golf course, Cumbernauld today.
Scotland’s schoolgirls trailed 2-1 after the morning foursomes but singles wins by Rachael Watton, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, (Firrhill High, Edinburgh and Gullane Ladies Golf Club ), Lesley Atkins (Loretto School and Gullane Ladies Golf Club ), and Gabrielle Macdonald (Trinity Academy, Edinburgh ) plus a halved match by Eilidh Briggs (Gryffe High, Johnstone) enabled them to share the honours at the end of the day.
The situation was reversed in the boys’ match with the Scots leading 3 ½-2 ½ after the foursomes.
England made up the one-point deficit and some by taking the singles 7 ½- 4 ½
The contest did go to the last green in the last match. Jamie Arthur (Kinross High) needed to beat Matt Birch from Leicestershire for a 9-9 finish but in a tension-packed finish the English boy won by one hole to produce the 10-8 scoreline in favour of his country.

THE EAST LOTHIAN JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE LEAGUE RACE TAKES FINAL TWIST!

Update 14th September - In the tightest finish for many years, Gullane GC Juniors have emerged as victors in the 2009 League! As Musselburgh Old's matches with Dunbar and Royal Musselburgh were both drawn, they missed winning the League for the very first time by the narrowest of margins! Many of their matches were decided on the last green, so it was a very close run finale for them, watched by their coach Jane Connachan and other supporters . Commiserations therefore, are due to the Musselburgh Old Team and to their Convenor Ruth Carroll who steered her Team to their highest ever finish. Ruth now steps down as Convenor and she leaves with the thanks of the League and other Convenors for her commitment over the last few years. There is a dead heat tie between Craigielaw and Tantallon for second place and as their goal difference is exactly the same, then second place was decided by the result of the actual League match between those 2 Teams. The previous result which now applies was a win for Craigielaw. So Gullane and Craigielaw now qualify for the Scottish National Regional Final in the Home Nations Junior Team Golf Championship at Westerwood GC on Sunday 27th September. A practice day is available on Saturday the 26th September with discounted accommodation for Teams who wish to stay overnight in the Hotel. Junior Convenors have details of this.

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELL DONE !!

Musselburgh Old drew their final two league matches leaving Gullane as Champions once again for 2009. Well done to each and everyone of you who who has played this year.

We never envisaged winning the League this year but we have done so and you all deserve the greatest credit for making it happen. Who would have thought that after 5 games, when we had won two, lost one and drawn two and we still had the strongest teams to play that we would be champions. Well we are. We kept our nerve when others didn't so we deserve it.

I need to arrange a photo opportunity for next weekend for the presentation and I hope all of you can come along (in team kit) I'll send out details when I have them but Saturday afternoon looks most likely

LEAGUE UPDATE !!

Update 12th September - Gullane now sit top of the League with all their matches played and must now finish at least in second place. Musselburgh Old drew with Dunbar on 12th September and now have to beat Royal Musselburgh away on 13th September to win the League. If they stumble however, and lose or draw their last match, Gullane would be Champions. There would be a dead heat tie between Craigielaw and Tantallon for second place and as goal difference is exactly the same, then second place is decided by the result of the match between those 2 Teams. If that is the case, then the result which applies is Craigielaw 5, Tantallon 1.

As usual, two Teams will qualify for the Scottish National Regional Final in the Home Nations Junior Team Golf Championship at Westerwood GC on Sunday 27th September. JUNIOR MASTERS GRAND FINAL AT GLENEAGLES !!

More success for Gullane golfers. Lara Frostwick and Sarah Dunlop are competing in the Grand Final of the Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters at the Queens Course Gleneagles on Sunday 11th October

They qualified at the regional final held at Lothianburn back in August having come through our local qualifier at Gullane. This high profile event is backed by the SGU and SLGA

Other Gullane members also playing are Finn Donaldson and Gary Brownlie representing North Berwick clubs on this occasion.

We hope they all do really well and have a fantastic day at the home of the Ryder Cup in 2014.

We will hold a qualifier at Gullane for those who would like to try to qualify next year.

Long before the Scottish Executive decided that introducing golf to primary school kids was a good idea in preparation for the 2014 Ryder Cup bid, Gullane Primary School has been running two annual competitions for its pupils. The Honor Bright Trophy is an annual matchplay event introduced in 1922 by the then retiring headmaster and The Babe Zaharias Trophy is a strokeplay event which started in 1964 with the trophy being donated by George Zaharias after the death of his wife Mildred "Babe" Zaharias who was arguably the greatest female athlete of all time, being a double Olympic gold medalist and a professional baseball and basketball player. She was one of the founders of the LPGA and the first woman ever to play in a professional male golf tournament - long before Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie! In 1947 she played and won the British Ladies Amateur Championship in Gullane and was so taken by the village that she returned on many further occasions. See photo !

A Grand Day All Round !!

First of all thanks to all of you who played on Sunday against Loretto Golf Academy. Considering the quality of some of the opposition I think a 5 each draw was a fairly good result.

However, I have even better news. Shortly after we broke up I got a text from the Craigielaw convener congratulating us on reaching the Daily Telegraph Scottish Team finals. Craigielaw drew with the Glen leaving us clear of them and now guaranteed at least 2nd place in the East Lothian League.

Musselburgh Old can still win the league if they win both of their remaining matches which they will be playing on Saturday and Sunday of next weekend

Loretto brought a strong international team to Gullane on Sunday with players from Scotland, Spain, Italy, Germany, England and South Korea. With internationalists on both sides, we played a mixture of handicap 4 balls and foursomes. The match was "nip and tuck" all the way coming down to the very last shot ....

PAUL LAWRIE JUNIOR JUG FINAL - SAT 5th SEPTEMBER

This is the first year of the Junior Jug and it looks like it will become an established annual event

The first tee time is now at 12.12 pm with subsequent matches at 6 min intervals. I suggest everyone should be there for 12noon if they can and certainly on the putting green ready to play at least 15 minutes in advance of their tee time. There may be last minute alterations. The Loretto team will probably use the range so please share the bays to allow everyone who wants to to hit some balls.

We need to play speedily as there is another match, playing forsomes, following us at 2pm.

This will be a competitive fixture with good golfers on both sides. Please be welcoming of our guests from Loretto. This is their first match of their term and some of them won't have had much experience of links golf.

Please wear team kit ( white shirt, navy jersey, and rain jacket ) if you have it or other Gullane Golf Club apparel if you don't ( and scrap for a place in next year's squad if you don't - then you'll get the kit ! ). It is good to have a few new players making their debut for Gullane.

Please remember a change of shoes for the clubhouse.

Nicky Black, the girls convenor, will be our official starter on the day and will welcome you into the Clubhouse after your match.
