GOOD TRY - HARD LUCK ALASDAIR !!
Mark is King of the Hickory Shafts
Joint sixth overnight, Mark King forged to the front with the best second round of two-over-par 73 to win the world professional hickory championship by two shots with a two-round total of six-over 148 over the Gullane No 2 course.
King, Scottish boys’ match-play champion at Dunbar in 1989, was winning on the Tartan Tour for the fourth time this season – and the cheque for £2,011 was almost double his previous best in 2009.
Runners-up on 150 were last year’s winner and 1983 Walker Cup player, Lindsay Mann (Carnoustie) and Gullane’s Alasdair Good, playing only his second ever competitive round with hickory-shafted clubs.Mann’s rounds were 76 and 74, Good’s 73 and 77. Each earned £1,408.
There were two Manns in the top six with Lindsay’s brother Fraser sharing fourth place with Paul Wardell (Whitekirk) and Andrew Oldcorn (Kings Acre) on 151 for which the trio received £742 each. Fraser Mann and Wardell both scored 74 and 77, Oldcorn, joint overnight leader with Good and Steven Taylor, had rounds of 73 and 78.
Former British women’s open amateur stroke play champion Heather MacRae, who is doing her PGA training with Alasdair Good as her boss and mentor, finished one shot outside the money.
She had scores of 84 and 82 for 31st place on 166. The £12,500 prize fund stretched as far as 30th place. Hard luck, Heather! Although she is confident that now she is getting the hang of playing with and against male pros, she will earn a £ or two on next year’s Tartan Tour.

Golf: Gullane treble, but what a squeeze
From the Evening News
Published Date: 24 September 2009
GULLANE have been crowned as the East Lothian Junior League champions after pipping Musselburgh Old for top spot in the tightest finish to the event for many years.
Coached by Jane Connachan, Musselburgh Old came so close to lifting the title for the first time but draws against Dunbar and Royal Musselburgh in their final two matches saw them miss out by the narrowest of margins.
For Gullane, the win completed a hat-trick of successes this season, having also won the East Lothian Junior Winter League and Team Strokeplay titles.
In the end, Musselburgh Old were also pipped for second spot, Craigielaw taking that honour ahead of Tantallon. They had the same points and same "goal difference" but Craigielaw had won the league match between the two teams, so they progress along with Gullane to the Scottish final of the Home Nations Junior Team Championship at Westerwood this Sunday.
Liberton and Prestonfield are also in the field for that event after finishing first and second in this season's Edinburgh Junior Summer League.

GOOD FOR HICKORY ?
( Courtesy of Colin Farquharson of Scottish Golf View )
The world professional hickory championship, and a prize fund of £12,500, is up for grabs by any one of at least a dozen players at the halfway stage of the 36-hole event of the Gullane 2 course.
The pros played the first round in conjunction with a pro-am in which their individual scores are carried over to Friday's round which is played as a straight stroke-play.
Well, with hickory shafts in their hands, can even the pros guarantee all the shots will be straight?
Only four strokes cover the leading 12 players after a day when high winds made conditions even more difficult for the use of old-fashioned clubs.
Gullane pro Alasdair Good - better known for being the "founding father" of the Wee Wonders children's championship - shares the lead on two-over-par 73 with Tartan Tour regulars Steven Taylor (Bothwell Castle) and former PGA championship winner Andrew Oldcorn (Kings Acre).
They are only one stroke ahead of Fraser Mann (Musselburgh), whose brother Lindsay won the title last year, and Paul Wardell (Whitekirk).
Sharing sixth place on 75 are Alan Lockhart (Ladybank), Mark King (Kingsifled) and past Scottish boys match-play champion Lee Harper (Archerfield Links).
Defending champion Lindsay Mann is one of four players ninth place on 76. He is not out of it yet.
Oldcorn led the amateur trio, rejoicing in the quaint name of "Baggies Bruisers," of Colin Binnie (handicap 6), Robert Skinner (18) and David Wishart (18) to victory in the team event with a net score of 10-under-par 61.

Putting Well Under Pressure !
Hi all,
A great pre-shot routine will give you the best chance of performing at your best under pressure.
Read on for some tips on developing a great pre-shot routine for your putting routine.
Great putting routine
1. First of all regardless of how you've been putting, get yourself into a more confident state. Get your head up, shoulders back and say to yourself that the putting green is your arena - it's where you do your best work (think about some of your best putts or just imagine how you'd walk approach the putt as a brilliant putter.)
2. Focus on getting the ball into the hole. Not 'close'. Your aim is to hole the putt, not to avoid three-putting. (As per my previous articles here you get what you focus on...)
3. As you're having a look at the path that your ball is going to roll into the hole, always go with your first instinct. This is your unconscious reaction and it will be better than any conscious effort to work out a different path or weight.
4. As you address the ball take a slow deep breath in and out and remember to have soft hands.*
5. Keep practice strokes to a minimum - ideally one or none*
6. Have one or a maximum two looks at the hole, forget about any technical stuff and stroke the ball into the hole. (Easy!)
*The reason that you want to minimise the time over the ball is that the longer you take, the more your conscious mind will try to get involved, leading to tension and a lack of feel. Keep the routine short and more of a reaction to the shot.

clubgolf news from Orkney
Royal opening for Orkney Golf Club facility development
NEWS RELEASE FROM CLUBGOLF
HRH The Princess Royal (on Wednesday 14 Oct 2009) will officially open a new practice facility at Orkney Golf Club which will transform junior coaching on the Islands.
Last autumn the Kirkwall based Club was awarded a £44,960 grant from sportscotland’s Building for Sport programme for an indoor practice facility. As a result of this funding further grants followed from HIE Orkney and Orkney Island Council. Extra funds in excess of £12,000 have been generated by members and parents of the junior members. Generous donations totalling over £10,000 have come from The R & A, OGC Ladies section and The Auld Boys.
Work on the new facility began in March, progressed seamlessly through the summer months and, bar a carpet which has to be laid is now complete. The new facility incorporates a covered three bay practice area, a two bay outdoor practice area and nets, four all weather tees and a Huxley putting green.
As an exciting extra the indoor practice area will house a Highland Institute of Sport Strength & Conditioning unit which will benefit the Islands’ Institute Network athletes.
Despite a short season and notoriously wet summers, the Club has, in less than four years, completely transformed its junior section. The catalyst for the junior drive is the national junior golf programme, clubgolf, a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association, the Professional Golfers' Association, the Golf Foundation and sportscotland, which emerged from Scotland’s successful bid to host the Ryder Cup in 2014.
In 2005 the Club put five members through clubgolf’s volunteer training course and opened for junior coaching. Within weeks junior coaching numbers had doubled from 20 to 40. This year 75 children registered for coaching. The number of qualified volunteer coaches now stands at 12.
Over the same time period the numbers of children involved in the Club’s weekly competitions has shot up from three to as many as 60. The Club’s third Junior Open in August attracted 88 children, 14 of them girls, from as far afield as Wick, South Ronaldsay and Stromness.
Now, at the point where the season has reached its traditional wind-down, the new facility means that coaching can now keep growing and developing through the winter.
“We are absolutely delighted that HRH The Princess Royal has agreed to support us by opening our new facility,” said Janette Mackie, who with Alistair Learmonth and Stewart Fotheringhame took over the running of the junior section in 2006.
“The facility will be a tremendous boost to the junior section, giving them the opportunity to have coaching all year round. It will develop the children’s quality of golf, which will in turn increase their enjoyment on the course.
“It is the enthusiasm of our children, and their eagerness to learn and improve, that spurred us on to provide this facility for them.
“This has been a fantastic project from which so many juniors and adults will reap the benefits. We would like to thank everyone – our sponsors, supporters, members, children and families - who have all contributed to its development.”
“Casey Construction has done fantastically well in bringing the indoor facility to completion. The finish is outstanding and has blended in with the rest of the Club. The volunteers have also worked extremely hard to help with the building’s interior finish and the external course work. Their team spirit and efforts are very much appreciated and we can’t thank them enough.”
sportscotland Chief Executive Stewart Harris said: "As we build towards the Ryder Cup in Scotland in 2014, it is fantastic to see clubs such as Orkney Golf Club embracing the clubgolf programme and putting junior golf at the very heart of the club.
"We are delighted that our investment of £44,960 enabled this important project to go ahead. The numbers of young golfers already lined up to use the practice areas and strength and conditioning unit demonstrates that providing the right facilities in the right location is instrumental in driving sports participation. Orkney Golf Club has created a fantastic facility which I'm sure will serve the needs of the community for many years to come."
Many are the examples of how the resourceful islanders have overcome every obstacle in their way. Their solution to the lack of a PGA Professional on the Islands has been to bring in Professionals to teach highly popular summer schools for the past two seasons.
A spin off of the new facility is that there is now the capacity to install a remote coaching video link. The Scottish Golf Union is providing a lap top and a video camera to enable Orkney volunteer coaches to send action footage of their juniors to the SGU Academy and North Talent ID centres.
One final development – extending the Club’s practice putting green from four to nine holes – should be complete by the spring. The Club is planning a “major binge” of fund raising efforts through the winter to bolster its junior funds.
In the meantime, following its royal seal of approval, the indoor facility will be open and be ready for coaching and practice in just three weeks time.
If anyone would like to find out more about the new practice facility (which will be open to anyone interested in trying out golf and non Orkney GC members are welcome) please contact:

A late finish at North Berwick - even the Seagull was asleep ...ZZZ
Our Under 14 team travelled along the road to Tantallon on Sunday to see if they could emulate the successes of their elders. The format was handicap fourballs and there were several long and close matches - with plenty of time to explore the bumps and borrows of the fabulous West Links - matches took over 5 hours due to the build up of play in front - both locals and visitors...... zzzzzzzzzzzz .......and certainly not our kids !
There was excellent play from both sides, many of whom have come through the clubgolf coaching schemes in North Berwick and Gullane . Anyway, the result was
Tantallon 3 Gullane 2
Clara Young and Graham Swan lost to Neil Bowden & Gary Brownlie 3&1
Oliver Ladbrooke & Gregor Wood beat Rhuraid Thain & Cameron Law 7 & 6
Scott Gillies & Craig Spinks lost to Lewis Edgar & Findlay Goodlad 2 & 1
Cameron Good & Sarah Dunlop beat Scott Young & Ricard Foulner 2 & 1
Brodie Good & Adam Munro lost to Murdo Lunn & Michael Hagen 2 & 1
Congratulations to Tantallon and many thanks to Tommy Hill and Tantallon for hosting - a great opportunity for our kids to test out their competitive edge one one of the best and most historic links in the UK. We look forward to a speedy return !
20 or so of our clubgolfers were also in action on the Kids Course in NB - report to follow.

World Hickory Open hits Gullane
Following the inaugural tournament in 2005 at Musselburgh Old Links, venue for 6 Opens in the late 19th century, the World Hickory Open 2006 moved 10 miles east to Craigielaw Golf Club, Aberlady for its first PGA supported event. A full field of professionals competed in a Pro-am and the following day’s Open. Craigielaw continued to host the event through 2006, 7 and 8. In 2009 the event moves to the historic golf course at Gullane.
Unique Stretch of Golfing Country
Gullane No. 2 as with its companion courses 1 and 3 sits mainly astride Gullane Hill. Close by is Luffness and among others nearby are East Lothian gems of Craigielaw, Kilspindie, Muirfield, Archerfield, The Renaissance and North Berwick West. This is quite a unique stretch of golfing coastline.
The Reverend John Kerr in his golfing guide (1894) wrote “There is no quainter or romantic spot than Gullane. Nor are there finer links anywhere ; try them for yourself. And what with hill and valley, fresh air and fine scenery, say if you can bring me anything to match my beloved Gullane.”
Bernard Darwin also put in his pennyworth in his book of great British golf courses (1910). He writes “There is probably no other golfing centre that is quite so good as Gullane”.

Bernard Darwin also put in his pennyworth in his book of great British golf courses (1910). He writes “There is probably no other golfing centre that is quite so good as Gullane”.
The course was built in 1898, designed by Willie Park Jr. and at the time was considered to be tougher than No.1, its yardage being over 6,000 yards. One of the great features of the course is its excellent short holes, particularly the 11th with its magnificent view and tricky club selection. Today it measures 6,244 yards from the medal tees which should prove to be quite a test for the best hickory players.
There are events in the first part of this week at Musselburgh Old and Craigielaw after which there will be the The World Hickory Practice Day on Gullane No2 on Wednesday 23rd Sepember , The World Hickory Pro-Am on Thursday "4th September and the World Hickory Open on Friday 25th September - see poster for details. A good field of professionals and amateurs will be competing for a prizefund of £17,500
Why don't you go along and support on Friday ?

FInal Medal and Prizegiving - 27th September
The Gullane Golf Club and Gullane Ladies Golf Club Junior Prizegiving takes place next Sunday, the 27th of September. That day we have the added, if very welcome, distraction of having a junior team contesting the Scottish team championships at Westerwood which may mean that timings will come under some strain.
The final junior medal of the summer season takes place on No.1 at 12.30 that day and the prize giving starts at 5.30 in the main clubhouse.
Snacks and drinks will be available in the Members Clubhouse to competitors coming off the course and there will be putting contests run by the professionals team to fill in the time while we wait for the later starters to complete their rounds and the team to return.
At around 5.30 we will present the prizes for the year in the joint ceremony with Gullane Ladies juniors at which a buffet will be served.
All parents are most welcome to come along to the prize giving and if you are planning attend please help the caterers by e-mailing me with a note to say how many of your family will be there.
I look forward to seeing you all on the day

TOM GREY IS OK !
Hi Everyone – please excuse me communicating with you all en masse – it has been a bit hectic! Thank you all so much for your telephone calls, cards, visits etc – we were so touched that everyone showed so much concern. Tom came out of the Infirmary today and is in great spirits and definitely on the mend. We go back for x-rays on Friday morning. The cast is a full leg job but will be reduced to half leg after a month. We were so lucky to have Hamish Simpson on the touch line when the injury happened. His professionalism took all the stress out of the situation – we are really grateful for all his input both at the time and afterwards.
Tom has at last tried on one of the pair of new Puma boots he bought prior to the game on Saturday! He’s pretty pleased with it – so I guess he is intending to play again. He has asked to be on the touch line on Saturday morning!
Again thank you all for your kind wishes. We will be in touch.
Tom, Peter and Joy
Hopefully he'll be at the Prizegiving and will recover to defend his winter stableford crown
