Junior Winter League 2010 / 2011
Please let me know if you are interested in playing junior Winter League matches this winter - the matches start Sun 10th but this week Dunbar will be unlikely to bring juniors
Once I have the schedule and a note of who is interested in playing I will try to schedule out who should play when but happy to have a volunteer or two - parent or junior to run things this year - maybe a job for our new Capt & Vice Capt ?
Jeff is considering some of our lower h/c juniors for slots in the mens team. Playing Junior Winter League is a good way to get to know Jeff and the men's team
We could do a bounce foursome match behind the Mens match on Sunday - are four of you interested / available to do that ?

Mens Winter League - Gullane gallop away with title as Craigielaw drop
FROM THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS WEBSITE
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
Gullane turned out for their final match in the East Lothian Winter League knowing anything but a 5-0 home defeat would be enough to secure the title.
That thought may have given some hope to opponents Haddington, themselves in need of a couple of league points to make sure of avoiding relegation. However, the match was more of a victory march for Jeff Aitken's side, with the hosts quickly taking control of all but the top tie, and in the end, there was some doubt as to which pairing secured the vital first point that won the title for Gullane.
Whether that claim fell to Fraser Syme and Murray Saunders on the 15th green in match 2, to Rob Jack and Mike Corrie on the 14th in match 3, or to Stuart Menzies and George Paterson on the 13th in match 5, nobody is quite sure.
What is certain is that Gullane secured their first Winter League title for 29 years, and Duncan Low and Scott Walker completed the day's work with a victory on the last green over Keith Nicholson and David Warner in the top tie.
Last year's Division 2 champions, Longniddry, completed their campaign with a win on the road at Kilspindie, and in so doing claimed runners-up spot.
However, there were more twists and turns in the race to avoid relegation and Dunbar completed their struggle for survival with a solid win away to Craigielaw. That was enough to preserve their top-flight credentials for another season and, at the same time, send the defending champions down.
Royal Musselburgh, the champions 11 times, suffered defeats at Haddington on Saturday and at Tantallon on Sunday and that leaves them vulnerable to the drop.
Tantallon's emphatic home win went some way to restoring confidence in a side that has been inconsistent this term, though they travel to Haddington next Saturday in the knowledge that they still need a draw to avoid the third automatic relegation spot.
And, should they win that match, they will move up to third place and send Royal Musselburgh into the play-off. Haddington will take heart from the 5-0 thrashing they handed out when they travelled to the coast in October, and have their sights set on a home win that will earn them the right to contest Sunday's play-off at Tantallon's expense.
Kilspindie return to Division 2 and will be joined in the drop by last year's champions, Craigielaw.
Glen have been on top of the Division 2 table all season, and duly finished off the job with a 4-1 win on the road against Musselburgh Old.
With just one defeat all season, Innes Christie's side can now look forward to competing in an elite six-team Division 1 next year.
Whitekirk have kept up the pressure all the way, and started the day just a point in arrears. Their match at Gifford was postponed due to snow and, with the title decided, that fixture cannot now have any bearing on the final placings.
As Division 2 runners up, Andy Ovens' men will have a second shot at promotion in the play-off match at Gullane next Sunday.

Winter League Update
Men
Most of you ,if not all, will know that Longniddry beat Craigielaw today 3 1/2 to 1 1/2. My calculations of the up to date league positions are as noted below.
Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Points
1) Gullane 13 10 1 2 41.5 23.5 21
2) Longniddry 13 8 3 2 37 28 19
What a fantastic result today, well done to everyone, it made the car journey back to Gullane very enjoyable. So a win, a draw or a 4-1 defeat if Longniddry win 5 - 0 next weekend away at Kilspindie would make GGC champions, the first time since 1980-81. I don`t want to count my chickens before they hatch but I know what result I am hoping for.
Cheers
Jeff

Gullane take pole position - Old Guys Doing V Well !
Evening News
24 February 2010
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
GULLANE stamped their authority on proceedings as
league leaders Longniddry came to visit in the latest
round of matches in golf's East Lothian Winter League.
league leaders Longniddry came to visit in the latest
round of matches in golf's East Lothian Winter League.
Longniddry, last year's Division 2 champions, had topped
the table since mid-November, but Jeff Aitken's men
took full advantage over their home course and handed
out a whitewash that meant they now move ahead
on hole difference, and with a game in hand.
There was a close tussle at the top of the order, but
the experienced Scott Walker and Duncan Low
prevailed on the home green. With everything going the
home team's way elsewhere on the course, that win
was enough to ensure the hosts took all they could.
At the other end of the table, Craigielaw completed a
successful raid on lowly Kilspindie, making relegation
now a certainty for the hosts, and at the same time
preserving their own Division 1 survival hopes.
Dunbar's impressive recent progress was halted by a
resurgent Royal Musselburgh side, themselves spurred
into action by the threat of relegation.
Indeed, whilst Longniddry and Gullane slug it out for the
title over the league's closing weeks, the more enthralling
tussle will surely be the one for survival.
The impending league restructure means three teams
will be relegated this term, with a fourth going into a
relegation play-off with the Division 2 runners-up.
With Kilspindie already relegated, Royal Musselburgh,
Dunbar, Tantallon, Craigielaw and Haddington find
themselves battling it out for just two guaranteed survival
places and all eight teams are in action on Sunday.

Our pairing is Peter Legget (Capt) and Greg Houlston (Vice-Capt)

We are currently top of the league with only one loss so hopefully we can see off Tantallon again and do the double following Rachael & Lesley's great win earlier in December. The mens team are also doing well in their league.

Winter League v Haddington Sun 22nd Nov
HADDINGTON CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER - TO BE REARRANGED
Remaining matches pre Christmas are Craigielaw on 29th Nov and Tantallon (away ) on 13th December
We are top of the league just now
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our pairing this week is James Fisher and Olly Ladbrooke - 11am at Haddington - I'll check in advance whether the weather is causing any difficulties
Greg Houlston and David Crummey had a good win last week at Kilspindie. We've done well overall so far, only losing once ( Longniddry ) , one match conceded ( Dunbar ) and two wins ( Royal Muss and Kilspindie ) with the Haddington game abandoned and being replayed on Sunday ( hopefully ).
Good to have young Crummey playing again after a summer of piping !
Remaining pre Christmas games after Haddington are Craigielaw and Tantallon !
Thanks to those who have turned out so far - Jamie, Michael, Graham, Olly, Greg , David , Calum - its really good to keep playing over the winter and to meet the men's winter league team. Jeff Aitken who manages the men's team has been very pleased to have the juniors along and I think has been suitably impressed so far !
Greg has also turned out for the men's team
