Stirling Uni versus USA College ?

STIRLING UNIVERSITY HAS MORE PULL FOR CRAIG HOWIE THAN ANY AMERICAN COLLEGE

COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com

If Craig Howie, the first Borderer to win the Scottish boys golf championship, gets his wish, he will be the first winner of the national Under-18s title since James White in 2006 to enrol at the University of Stirling.

Speaking after his victory over Ewan Scott (St Andrews) in the Paul Lawrie Foundation-sponsored championship at Murcar Links, Howie said he was not even considering going to a United States college as recent boy champions such as Paul Ferrier (2007) and Grant Forrest (2010) did.

"Stirling's golfing set-up, with Dean Robertson the coach, really attracts me. I couldn't find anywhere better by going to America," said Howie.

"That’s very refreshing to hear," said David Christie, the University of Stirling's  Press Officer.
"One of the aims of the scholarship programme at Stirling and the wider national student scholarship programme Winning Students (which currently supports nine golfers) is to give Scottish talent the platform to remain in Scotland and progress in their sport and their studies."

Stirling's sports performance manager Raleigh Gowie clarified Howie's position as a potential student:
"Craig has been offered a conditional entry to the University of Stirling, starting in September 2012. He requires to obtain certain grades to in his forthcoming Higher exams. He has also been offered a golf scholarship at Stirling dependent on his entry to a degree programme. The last Scottish boys' champion to enter Stirling was James White but there have been a number of Scotland junior internationalists to come to Stirling over the years."

Stirling are cornering the market in golfing talent as the results at last week's British Student Golf Tour Finals at West Lancs underlined - Jack McDonald and Hannah McCook of Stirling won the men's and women's title respectively and the top five finishers in the men's event are all Stirling students.

Recently it was announced that former European Tour pro Andrew Coltart would mentor a leading golfer from the University of Stirling through a dedicated new scholarship.

The scholarship will provide crucial funding support and see Coltart work closely with the selected player, providing coaching tips and passing on his own experiences of life as a professional. It builds on the University's International Sports Scholarship Programme, which supports 18 promising male and female golfers each year, providing funding and academic flexibility so students can excel in their sport and their studies.

Since it was first established more than 30 years ago, the programme has helped many players develop into touring professionals, including Richie Ramsay and Catriona Matthew.
Currently, the men's programme is managed by ex-Tour player Dean Robertson, who has led his charges to the Scottish, British and European Universities team titles.
White and 2011 Scottish Fuels Sutherland Chalice winner Fraser McKenna.

Andrew Coltart said:
"I am delighted to be able to provide this opportunity to a gifted young golfer and pass on my experience to hopefully help them make the step into the professional game. The programme at the University of Stirling continues to go from strength to strength and I can't help but be impressed with the set-up and facilities. I must confess I wasn't academically talented enough to get a University scholarship, which is a fantastic way to prepare for a career on and off the golf course."
University Sports Performance Manager Raleigh Gowrie (pictured left) said: "The Andrew Coltart Golf Scholarship provides an opportunity for a very talented young golfer to combine high performance golf and education, encouraging our best young talent to remain in Scotland.
"Many performance sport programmes just provide technical advice and guidance, but this provides a unique opportunity to work closely with a golfer who has vast experience playing in high pressure situations."

The University's golf programme also receives support from the R&A, who have earmarked Stirling as a model of good practice for sports scholarships.
* Graeme Robertson and Jack McDonald also receive support from Winning Students, Scotland's national sports scholarship programme for student athletes.

GB and I Curtis Cup team selection Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) leads by five strokes after 36 holes of the Irish Under-118 girls' open amateur stroke-play championship at Roganstown Golf and Country Club today.

Scotland has two players in the top 10. Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) is in sixth position on 151 with scores of 81 and 70. Her second round was the second lowest score of the tournament.
Former Scottish girls champion Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies) is sharing 10th place on 154 with a pair of 77s.
Leona Maguire's twin, Lisa, the European women's individual amateur title-holder, was unable to play because of an ongoing wrist injury.

WONDER OF WATTON

WONDER OF WATTON: Rachael wins title and Freshman of Year honour

Rachael Watton, fourth left, holding the trophy and her happy Denver University team-mates

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Edinburgh's Rachael Watton has had her highs and lows since she went to America last autumn. But this week, the Scot produced the very best performance of her freshman golfing year at Denver University.
Recapturing the form that made her a Scotland cap and one of the top female prospects in the country, Rachael won the individual title at the Sun Belt Conference Women's Championship and helped Denver win the team title for the ninth year in a row.

Mortonhall GC member Watton tied with Katie Mundy (Florida International University) from Hampshire on one-under-par 215 at the head of the field of 55 players at The Shoals Golf Club, Muscle Schoals. Alabama.

Rachael won the play-off at the first extra hole where Katie sent her ball into a water hazard. Watton was later named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year. She was also named in the Conference's all-star team, a team that never plays a match but is an indication of whom the coaches think are the best players in the Conference.

"I'm so happy for our team and so proud of how we competed this week," head coach Sammie Chergo said. "Everyone played with a lot of passion for the University of Denver and I really appreciate their effort."

Denver finished 17 strokes ahead of second-placed Middle Tennessee in the team event, contested by 11 squads.
Watton's rounds over a 6,264yd, par-72 course were 71-73-71. Mundy scored 69-72-74. The pair finished one shot ahead of third placed Megan Vaughn (Arkansas-Little Rock).
Welsh international Anna Carling, a student at Arkansas State University made it into the top 20 withrounds of 75-80-74 for 229, the same total as Rachael Watton's Denver team-mate from Ireland, Sarah Faller who scored 75-81-73. They tied for 17th place.

Rachel and Denver University now go forward to the NCAA Regional Championships from May 10 to 12.

Gullane at Scottish Boys

There were no fewer than 8 Gullane Junior Members playing at the Paul Lawrie Scottish Boys at Murcar - possibly the biggest contingent there - albeit only 3 of these 8 chose to show Gullane as their home club ( Hmmm ! ). The handicap cut was originally 5.7 and Graham Swan also squeezed in having made the trip up as a reserve. There was a class field of 256 - fierce competition.

Our players gave a good account of themselves although in a knock-out competition it always ends in disappointment for 255 out of 256 !

Our Captain Michael Williams is a bit disappointed with his R1 exit and the excitement must have been too much for Graham Swan ( & Gordon ) as he also succumbed in R1. There were however excellent wins for Anthony Blaney 6&4 , Alexander Wilson 5&4, Thomas Simmonds 6&5,  Murray Patterson 3&2 , new member Stuart Blair 3&1 and Gary Brownlee ( representing Tantallon ) 1up . Gary fell at the next hurdle to Willem Kerr of Craigielaw as did all of Thomas ( to Scottish squad member Flannery ) , Murray and Stuart. Anthony marched on before losing in R3 by 1 hole - a disappointing end in his final year.

Alexander Wilson did best - three big wins ( 5&4 , 7&5 , 5&4 v Callum Satterly of Longniddry & Merchiston Golf Academy )  carrying through his Junior Tour form before a narrow loss in R4 to Laurence Allan of Alva.

Congratulations to Craig Howie from Peebles who won the Championship ! He was third in the SGU Tour Event at Gullane No 2 the week before - behind our very own Anthony & Alexander.

Bring on 2013!!

ELJG League season kicks off!

There were three matches on Sunday 15th April.

Dunbar halved with Craigielaw,

Royal Musselburgh halved with Tantallon,

Gullane defeated Kilspindie.

The League table can be found on http://eastlothianjuniorgolf.org.uk/

Gullane One:Two in Scottish Junior Tour Event on No2 !!

Blnaey (left) and Wilson share victory at Gullane

01/04/12

Alexander Wilson and Lothians colleague Anthony Blaney ( both Junior Members at Gullane ) shared the spoils in the opening event on this season’s Scottish Hydro Junior Tour at Gullane.

Forty two of the country’s leading Under-18 talents fought out the 54-hole tournament over the weekend with Wilson, from The Renaissance Club, and Blaney (Liberton) finishing tied.
The pair both posted five under par totals on Gullane No 2 to head the field, with Wilson's sparkling final round five-under 66 pulling him level with Blaney after he had trailed by three after 36 holes.
Wilson’s eagle two at the par 4 third was ultimately the key to helping him tie with Blaney, the SGU National Boys' Squad player, in the first competitive action of 2012.
Ewan Scott (St Andrews) and Craig Howie (Peebles) finished at four under par to share third place, with Jamie Savage (Cawder) fifth on his own after an excellent final round 67.
It was a fine test for the field ahead of the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boys’ Championship which tees off at Murcar Links a week tomorrow.
Scottish Hydro is sponsoring all three Junior Tour events this year, reflecting their support for junior golf in this country, as well as the Scottish Boys’ Order of Merit.
The other Junior Tour events are at The Roxburghe (26-27 May) and Rowallan Castle (16-17 June).

The Irish challenge will face stiff opposition from the high quality international field which includes 28 French players including members of the European girls championship-winning team, Manon Molle and Claudia Chemin both playing off plus 1.
England and Scotland also have representatives in the field with England’s Gabriella Cowley arriving fresh from a win at the Scottish Under 16 Championship at Strathmore while the Scottish panel includes Clara Young who was a member on the GB and I U16 Junior Vagliano team last year. Players from Norway, Sweden, Germany and Iceland are also represented in the field.
The 72 competitors will play 36 holes on Saturday with the top 50 players qualifying for the final round on Sunday.
The ILGU will also use the Championship to give Junior High Performance panellists Niamh McSherry (Lurgan), Lisa O’Shea (Shannon) and Niamh Ward (Lurgan) valuable experience playing among Europe’s elite.
