CAP FOR BLANEY

SGU NAME SQUAD FOR EUROPEAN BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION

Current SGU Boys Order of Merit leader Greig Marchbank has been rewarded for his fine form this season with a place in the Scotland team for next week’s European boys' team championship in Prague, Czechoslovakia next week (July 5 to 9).

Marchbank, from Dumfries and County GC, won the recent Junior Tour event at Cardrona with an impressive six-under par aggregate of 282 and has built up a significant lead in the boys’ standings after a string of fine performances throughout 2011, including a share of second place in the Golf Data Lab Scottish Youths Championship.

Liberton’s Anthony Blaney, second behind Marchbank in the rankings, also earns his first taste of European team action. The 17-year-old played a key role in the Lothians team’s defence of the Scottish Boys Area Championship earlier this month and also finished runner-up to Marchbank in the Junior Tour event at Cardrona.

Joining him will be Lothians team-mate Grant Forrest, the former Scottish Boys Champion and current Boys Order of Merit number three, while (Kilmarnock) Barassie’s Jack McDonald will be the most experienced player in the six-man team having competed in the previous two European Championships and Boys’ Home Internationals.

Eamon Bradley (Mount Ellen), fourth in the boys’ rankings and who finished seventh in the East of Scotland Open Championship at the weekend, is another debutant in the team, with St Andrews rising star Ewan Scott, winner of the opening Junior Tour event of the season, completing the line-up. Scott, the former English Boys U14s champion, will be the youngest member of the team, having recently turned 16.

The Championship begins on Tuesday at the Prague City Golf Club, with two rounds of stroke play qualifying before the top eight teams compete for the title in the first flight of match play.

Defending champions Denmark have dominated the tournament in recent years and will be aiming for their fourth win out of the last five years, while the Scots are looking for their first win in the event since 2000, when Martin Laird featured in the winning side and will be hoping to improve on last season’s tenth place finish.

The full Scotland team, sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and TaylorMade-adidas Golf, is:

Anthony Blaney (Liberton & Gullane )
Eamon Bradley (Mount Ellen)
Grant Forrest (Craigielaw)
Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie)
Greig Marchbank (Dumfries & County)
Ewan Scott (St Andrews)

Ayrshire women's county champion Rachael McQueen (Troon Ladies) and last year's Scottish Under-18 girls champion Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies) finished joint first in the girls' section with one-over-par 73s.
Joint third on 74 were Jordana Graham (Southerness) and Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe).
East Lothian's youngest-ever women's county champion, 14-year-old Clara Young (North Berwick), who played for Great Britain and Ireland in the Junior Vagliano Trophy match at Royal Porthcawl last weekend, had a disappointing 78 to finish seventh.

Gullane Golf Club Junior Summer Camps 2011

Here is a great Summer Camp programme for our Gullane Junior Members !! A summer golfing "boot camp" to take you to the next level !?

These all take place in July and we hope as many as possible of our Juniors, whether aged 10 or 17, and whether boys or girls, will take up the excellent opportunity. The cost will be £70 which is definitely value for money and includes nine hours professional coaching, lunch on each of the three days and playing in the afternoon with prizes and with course management input from the pros – a key element to playing and scoring better. The cost is kindly subsidised by Gullane GC and Gullane Ladies GC.

I know many of you will be busy with golf and holidays throughout July as well as perhaps playing in some Junior Opens (see the blog for details). However, I think that attendance at least one of these camps would do your game no end of good and increase your longer term enjoyment of the game. Instruction will cater for both novices and experienced players. Ian Rowlands will be leading the pro team with assistance from the other pros as required. Given Ian’s involvement, I am sure there will be a focus on the “Scoring Zone” ie 100 yards in - this is the aspect which makes the most difference in achieving good scores!

If you snooze you lose – please get in touch with the pro shop just as soon as possible either by phone or by e-mail and reserve your slot. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

Iain

Fun Foursomes - 22 June / Under 14 Match v The Glen

23 of our Juniors were out on No3 last night playing in a fun foursomes event designed to encourage our newer & younger players with assistance from some of our older juniors, particularly Captains Greg & Lara but also Jack, Sarah , Nandini, Lauren , Graham , David, Scott & Duncan. An excellent evening and great too to see a busy course early evening mid-summer.

The younger ones Charlotte, Euan, Roan, Jed, Mollie, Hannah, Cameron, Rohan, Imogen, Lewis and Roddy.
Every younger player was partnered with an older player and played foursomes round the loop, they were given half combined handicap. Greg had to play two balls because we had an extra boy.

The winners were David Black and Roddy Main with a net 18.

The U14 Team plays a match v The Glen on Friday afternoon

We will be represented by

Sarah Dunlop ( Capt )
James Fox
William Ladbrooke
Roddy Main
Calum Black
Euan Stenton

Good Luck !

Thanks to Nicky, Pamela & Martin for their help with the younger kids !

Junior Championships - 18 /19th July 2011

Loads going on for our juniors on the big stage but plenty going on too back at base for our up and coming players competing for our own Junior Championships last week-end.

Congratulations go to 16 year old  Graham Swan who won the Boys Championship with a measured level par performance to resist the challenge of 14 year old Finn Donaldson . Graham got off to a fast start going 4 ahead early doors and then kept his head with a stream of pars so that Finn was never able to make in roads, with Graham winning 3&2 . Well deserved victory and impressive golf - a reward for excellent work this season

The semi-finals took place earlier on Sunday with Graham winning a marathon match on the 23rd against jaded Jamie Black who'd just returned from his DofE expedition and with Finn dispatching 2011 new member Tom Middlenass. All will be back in 2012.

Under 14 Championship

Our pathway continues with a keenly contested u14 Championship this year involving some of our younger players. The semi finals took place on Saturday on No 3 with Graeme Chalmers defeating Charlotte Munro on the 19th in a tight match and 10 yo William Ladbrooke coming from behind to defeat Cameron Middlemass.

The final was off the yellow tees on the big stage of No 1 alongside the other Club finals. William played solid golf to win 4&3 and add to his already impressive collection of trophies - next stop Wee Wonders @ Carnoustie !  Well done to both William & Graeme and thank-you to match referee Nicky Black

Previous winners of the U14 Championship are

2007- Ally Simpson,
2008 -Tom Grey ,
2009 - Duncan McLean
2010 - Oliver Ladbrooke

A good week-end for the Swans with older brother winning the Doctors Trophy too defeating recent junior David McCall in the final.
