WEST KILBRIDE SET FOR SCOTTISH
BOYS' CHAMPIONSHIP
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION

The scenic setting of West Kilbride on the Ayrshire coast will be the stage as the Scottish Boys Championship gets the domestic golfing season gets underway in earnest next week (5 – 10 April).

Scotland’s leading 256 junior golfers will battle it out for the prestigious title, won last year by Aberdonian David Law who went on to make history as the first golfer to win the Scottish Boys Championship and Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Championship in the same year.

There are high hopes of an Ayrshire winner on home soil, with Kilmarnock Barassie’s Jack McDonald among the favourites to lift the trophy. The 17-year-old is the reigning Scottish Boys Stroke Play Champion and will be looking to emulate Scott Henry (2004-05), Steven Young (1994-95) and John Huggan (1977-78) all of whom achieved the Boys’ Stroke Play and Match Play double.

Another Ayrshire club, Troon Welbeck – home of 2008 winner Michael Stewart - will also harbour ambitions of glory, with no fewer than eight representatives in the field, more than any other club while Glasgow club Williamwood and Craigielaw in East Lothian are the next highest ranked with five junior members apiece. A total of 141 clubs are represented.
( Gullane has 5 members in the field albeit some currently have their home clubs elsewhere )

Deeside’s Jack Scott will go into the Championship full of confidence after his win in the opening SGU Junior Tour event of the season, as will young Borderer Simon Fairbairn (Torwoodlee) following his recent victory in the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions at The Duke’s, St Andrews.

Pollok player Conor O’Neil, a member of the Scottish Golf Academy (West), is the lowest handicap player in the field at +1.9 and will rate his chances of victory in the opening ‘Major’ of the season, while Craigielaw’s Grant Forrest – winner of the firstpointusa.com Scottish Boys U16s Championship last year – and Scott Gibson (Southerness), fresh from playing for Scotland’s Men’s team in South Africa, will be among the other players to look out for.

West Kilbride celebrates its tenth hosting of the Championship and SGU Championship Manager Euan Mordaunt is relishing a return to the picturesque venue:

“There’s always a great buzz leading up to the first major event of the domestic season and after a long hard winter I think there’s even more anticipation this year. West Kilbride is a fantastic venue with stunning views across to Arran and a warm welcome for everyone who visits the club.”

“This year’s Championship will be hotly contested with some great talent emerging through our junior ranks and several national champions at age group level in a very strong field. The course will be a testing but fair challenge and I’m sure we’ll have a very worthy champion come next Saturday.”

The handicap ballot fell at 5.4 with 32 players on the reserve list. A results service will be available onwww.scottishgolf.org with live scoring during the latter stages of the Championship. The first match gets underway at 6.45am on Monday 5 April with the 36-hole final commencing at 8.30am on Saturday 10 April.

Mens Medals

Just a reminder that Junior boys with a handicap of 24 or less can play in the men's medals which take place on the first Saturday and first Wednesday of each month. You need to play with an adult member.

The April medal takes place on Sat 3rd April - starting sheet is with Starter No 1 - phone or pop in for a time if you fancy it - if you don't haver an adult to play with he should be able to sort you out. A good opportunity to work on that handicap - the men's CSS is usually higher !!

The April Wednesday Medal  is on 7th April - you just need to book a time during the day - again with an adult.

Spring Meeting - Sunday 4th April - Family Tea

The Junior Spring Meeting takes place on Sunday at 12 noon

We have the tee for over an hour so be great if everyone who is available turns out , particularly new members those who may not have played in any competitions

Don't worry if you don't yet have a handicap - you can use this round as one of your cards to obtain one

This is also a * medal so that the less experienced players can play six holes with an adult supervising - please let me know if you would like to do this so that we have enough adults ir.mclean@yahoo.co.uk

No 3 is a great course for Juniors - great for the beginners and more experienced golfers alike. There was a pro competition on it last week with the best score 61 from David Patrick .http://www.scottishgolfview.com/2010/03/david-patrick-with-championship-trophy.html

This medal will count for the scratch Order of Merit - Alasdair Simpson is in the lead so far !

We have arranged for catering to be available after the golf in the Members Clubhouse - Fish and Chips or Sunday roast - kids and families welcome it is best if you book by contacting the Clubhouse Manager Steven Marshall on clubhousemanager@gullanegolfclub.com

Please encourage everyone to turn up - we wil, try to accomodate reasonable requests for pairings and we are happy for parents to walk round with younger members if desired

Top tip - turn up early and warm up on the range !

First Tee - Gullane No 1

Good Coaching !

Quote from Parent

" His round on Sunday was actually a fine advert for Alasdair Good's tuition!  He was struggling with his game the whole of the week before and I persuaded him to go for a lesson on Saturday first thing, before going off to the Bass Rock medal.  He scored horribly in the medal but came away greatly encouraged that things were slotting into place again.  An hour and a half on the putting green on Saturday after his round did no harm either.  He was in great position on the 18th for a birdie so the 3-putt bogey was disappointing.  First time he's broken par in a medal though so can't be too disappointed! "

Loretto v Gullane Juniors - 21 March

Loretto 3 : 3 Gullane Juniors

Honours even in re-match!

After the washout earlier in the term, the Loretto Golf Academy played the second half of their bi-annual fixture against Gullane Juniors on Sunday . The weather at Craigielaw resembled an early summer's day which proved excellent for scoring. The pairs played in two-ball foursomes format against a pretty strong team from Gullane.

Each Loretto pairing was conceding shots to their opponents apart from game 6 and it proved to be a tight contest. George Munsey and Julie Yang got the ball rolling for Loretto with a commanding 4 & 3 victory over Alexander Wilson and Gullane captain Greg Houlston . The pair were in control of their match from the start and closed out a deserved victory on the 15th green. Every other game was, quite incredibly, decided by the margin of 2 & 1!

After the initial Loretto victory, Gullane then levelled with a good win in the top tie, with Anthony Blaney and Alasdair Simpson delighted play some fine golf  to record a good victory over Loretto's top pairing Whose combined handicap is + 2 . Lewis Gregory and Sami Bouzabia combined with some fantastic figures for a 2 & 1 victory in match 3 over Jamie Black and Michael Williams . The two following ties went against Loretto with good victories for Gullane pairings Graham Swan and Gary Brownlee , and Olly Ladbrooke and Finn Donaldson  before the Loretto all girls partnership of third form students Laura Alexander and Migle Rusteikaite combined to defeat Lara Frostwick and Cameron Good to ensure the match was drawn overall - a fair result

Well done to the Gullane team against very high quality international opposition !

Junior Champion of Champions

Simon Fairburn and Alyson McKechin win 2009
Scottish junior champion of champions' titles
There was an East-West divide today in the destination of the 2009 Scottish Junior Champion of Champions golf titles – the tournament was rescheduled from last November 1 – with Simon Fairburn (Craigielaw) heading a Lothians 1-2-3 in the boys’ section and Alyson McKechnie from the Elderslie club near Paisley winning the girls’ title ahead of Rachel Watton (Mortonhall).
Fairburn returned a one-over-par 72 over The Duke’s Course, St Andrews to head a field of 34 boys. Beaten finalist in last year’s Lothians boys champion, the Craigielaw junior birdied the first, 12th and 17th but dropped shots at the seconhd, fifth, 14th and 15th in halves of 37 and 35.
He won by a single shot from Craigielaw clubmate Grant Forrest, last year’s Scottish Under-16 champion, and Tom Blennerhassett (Marriott Dalmahoy).
Forrest shed four shots to par over the second and third holes – a triple bogey 7 at the second and a bogey 5 at the third, his only deviations from par on the first nine holes which cost him 40 strokes.
He birdied the long 11th, the 14th and short 16th in a very good score of two-under-par 33 for the inward half which included only one bogey, at the 12th.
Blennerhassett had birdies at two long holes, the first and the sixth but dropped shots at the fifth, 10th, 14th and 15th in halves of 35 and 38.
Alyson McKechin won the girls title with a four-over-par round of 75 (39-36), one shot ahead of Rachel Watton (37-39) who, after starting at the 10th, dropped four shots over a three-hole span - the 16th, 17th and 18th. She had bogeys at the 16th and 17th and a double bogey at the 18th. She had birdies at the long sixth and the long 11th, dropping other shots at the fifth, eighth and 10th.
McKechin birdied the long first, the seventh, the long 11th and the short 16th. She had bogeys at the third, fourth, fifth, eighth, ninth, 10th, 14th and 18th.
+Tournament director Euan Mordaunt thought The Duke's Course was in very good condition for the Under-18s' tournament, considering that, during the severe winter months, the course was closed for as many as 51 days.

Stop Press - Junior Medal Latest

Haven't got the full results but fantastic golf today from Alasdair Simpson  - one under par 70 off the white tees on No 1 for a net 65  - WOW !   He drove through the par 4 eighth much to the consternation of the lady member on the green - oops ! Lets hope he signed his card !

Good turn out - 25 overall , 16 boys and 9 girls (perhaps a shortlived record for girls ? ). Importantly, 6 younger less experienced players did 6 supervised holes on No 3 - great to encourage them.

Junior Golf in Gullane 2010

There is a long tradition of junior golf in Gullane and, currently, much interest in the village and the various golf clubs in seeing this tradition being enhanced and extended to produce more fine young golfers - both girls and boys. Gullane is one of the best places in the world to play golf and the facilities we have here are fantastic. Tiger Woods + Co will all hopefully be back in Gullane in 2013 for the Open - lets try to show the golfing world that we have the very best set up for junior golf when they come.

KIDS' COURSE

There is a 6 hole kids course situated in the heart of the village which is now maintained to a high standard by Gullane GC Course Manager Stuart Duff and team. It is free and accessible to play on for residents and visitors alike and gives all kids the opportunity to have a go with minimum fuss - no membership, green fees or handicap required! Adults may only play if accompanied by a child. The course is used local groups such as Gullane Primary School and local Cubs and Scouts as well as for competitions during Gullane Games Week. It is also an excellent facility for clubgolf and we hope to see continued good use of it over the years to come. This summer it will be used for some clubgolf events for kids from different parts of East Lothian as well as, hopefully, some more fun competitions for younger local kids. ( Volunteers welcome - e-mail ir.mclean@yahoo.co.uk !! )

There will be a Girls in Golf Fun Competition on Sun 25th July 2010 and an Open Fun Competition for boys and girls on Sunday 29th August 2010  - both run by Kate Green of East Lothian Council ( see below )

A card of the course is now available from clubgolf coaches.

GOLF IN GULLANE PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Primary School supports golf for kids and it is part of the curriculum for P5 kids through the clubgolf scheme which has been enthusiastically backed by both the school and Gullane GC / Gullane Ladies GC.

Long before the Scottish Executive decided that introducing golf to primary school kids was a good idea in preparation for the 2014 Ryder Cup bid, Gullane Primary School has been running two annual competitions for its pupils. The Honor Bright Trophy is an annual matchplay event introduced in 1922 by the then retiring headmaster and The Babe Zaharias Trophy is a strokeplay event which started in 1964 with the trophy being donated by George Zaharias after the death of his wife Mildred "Babe" Zaharias who was arguably the greatest female athlete of all time, being a double Olympic gold medalist and a professional baseball and basketball player. She was one of the founders of the LPGA and the first woman ever to play in a professional male golf tournament - long before Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie! In 1947 she played and won the British Ladies Amateur Championship in Gullane and was so taken by the village that she returned on many further occasions.

The 2009 Babe Zaharias Trophy was played last year  producing , we think, the youngest ever winner William Ladbrooke  who also won The Honor Bright competition

Many well known names who now feature in Dirleton Castle GC and Gullane GC have their names on these trophies! For further details of these competitions please contact Maureen Tremmel at the school (01620 843455).

CLUBGOLF

The clubgolf coaching programme has been running in Gullane for 5 years now, enthusiastically backed by a band of 12 volunteer coaches and both Gullane GC and Gullane Ladies GC who provide support and facilities. It is introduced through the school with every child in P5 taking part in firstclubgolf with plastic clubs and then those who are interested progressing to the real thing with regular coaching from the volunteers as well as from Gullane GC pro Alasdair Good and team. Coaching take place on Sunday at 4.15 pm for those in P5 / P6 with the pros taking over for those in P7 and beyond and running sessions on Mondays and Friday afternoons. We currently have nearly 50 children in the programme aged from 9 -14 with just as many boys as girls . Various competitions and trips are also organised including events at Craigielaw South Course, North Berwick Kids Course, Dalmahoy, Gleneagles and Muirfield for the Senior's Open . East Lothian Council fully supports this initiative and employs Kate Green as Junior Golf Development Manager. For further details please contact Andy walker  who is the Gullane clubgolf Convenor (walker.andy2@btopenworld.com) or Kate on 01875 619071 or kgreen@eastlothian.gov.uk or Iain McLean ( ir.mclean@yahoo.co.uk). or visit the clubgolf sites detailed below

Further volunteer coaches are welcome but need to go through training and disclosure procedures. Contact Andy or Kate for details.

The cost is only £25. A great place to spend the summer evenings after school and the summer holidays!! No 3 is a fantastic course maintained to a high standard and very enjoyable to play on - an ideal place for kids to develop their skills. Please contact the office at the Visitor's Clubhouse to obtain a permit - no proposer or seconder required.

The benefits of membership include coaching from the pros and extensive opportunities to play on all courses as skills develop and handicaps decrease. There is a full competitive programme involving medals, knock-out events, the Biggart Baillie LLP Order of Merit and Under 14 and Under 18 Championships. The Team play in the very competitive East Lothian Junior League and were the winners in 2009 beating off stiff competition from Craigielaw, Musselburgh Old and Tantallon . Boys participate in a variety of Lothians and SGU events including LGA squad coaching, the Lothians Boys Championship, the Scottish Boys Championships ( Under 18, 16 and 14 ) and a host of Junior Opens around East Lothian and Edinburgh.

We are running 6 hole competitions for younger new members this year

There are matches against the Men and the Seniors - as often as not won by the boys -as well as the Calcutta Cup in mid-August each year - which involves the juniors with a suitable relative playing stableford foursomes on No1 - a very sociable but challenging occasion! We also have matches against Loretto and  Royal Mid Surrey.

Juniors are encouraged to use both the Members' and Visitors' Clubhouses.

The Gullane GC Junior Convenor is  Iain McLean ( ir.mclean@yahoo.co.uk ) ably assisted by Gordon Swan and a team of other helpers

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP OF GULLANE LADIES GC

Girls may apply to join Gullane Ladies Golf Club from age 10. There are currently 30 girl members - a number which has increased as a result of the clubgolf initiative. Separate competitions are held for the girls and they also participate in medals alongside the boys as well as in the annual knock-out Morrison Trophy. Girls also take part in East Lothian and SLGA competitions. Some of the girls play very competitively, playing in SLGA events and representing Scotland, while others just play for fun with friends. We have three of the very best junior girls in Scotland as members of GLGC.

For further details please contact the GLGC  Convenor  Nicky Black ( black.nicky@googlemail.com ).

NORTH BERWICK CHILDREN'S GOLF COURSE COMPETITIONS

These very successful competitions for under 14s take place every year at the Kids' Course in North Berwick which is to be found adjacent to the Marine Hotel. Kids can play on this course for an annual fee of £10 / £20 depending on age - contact the pro shop at North Berwick. It really is an excellent course for kids and is a good next step from the Gullane Kids' Course with small greens, real rough, bunkers, out of bounds and, typically for North Berwick, walls coming into play! Many North Berwick and Gullane kids have honed their skills here before taking on the bigger courses. Catriona Matthew, now one of the best women golfers in the world played in these competitions and Nick Dougherty who is challenging for a Ryder Cup place this year traveled up from Liverpool to compete. The course is no Mickey Mouse challenge though - the best kids can shoot under par scores and would happily take on even the best local adults - be warned! All kids ( boys and girls ) are welcomed although those under 8 are not usually allowed into the knock-out competitions.

The competitions in 2010  are likely to be :-

Saturday 10 July - July Cup ( Stroke Play )
Friday 16 July - Balfour-Melville ( Knock-Out )
Saturday 31 July  - Cree Medal ( Stroke Play )
Saturday 7 August Esmond Cup ( Knock-Out )
Saturday 14 August Malcolm Cup ( Strokeplay / Knock-Out )

GULLANE GAMES WEEK

WEE WONDERS

This was the brainchild of Alasdair Good who is the head pro at Gullane GC and is now a national UK competition for over 4500 kids aged 5 -12 sponsored by HSBC. There are 100 local qualifying events throughout the country followed by regional finals and a grand final at St Andrews in August. It is a flag competition with each child trying to get as far as they can round the course with a maximum allowance of 36 shots. The local qualifier was held at North Berwick Kids' Course in June and a couple of Gullane kids in different age groups qualified for the regional final in Troon at the beginning of July. One to enter again in 2010 ( competition suspended in 2010 due to lack of sponsor - a great shame )

At the end of May 2008 the inaugural US Kids European Championships were held at Gullane, Luffness, Craigielaw and Kilspindie for kids aged between 5 and 14. Over 450 kids from no less than 34 countries, accompanied by their families, came to play. 6 kids from Gullane GC entered. Again this event was the inspiration of Alasdair Good working closely with the US Kids company from Atlanta, Georgia. They are the leading makers of kids clubs and equipment and they run a series of similar events in the United States. This was the first European event and it was a great success with some astounding golf being played by the kids despite challenging weather conditions and thick rough ! It is hoped that the event will become a fixture in Gullane and that many local kids will participate in years to come, enjoying their first tastes of international tournament golf at a young age. www.uskidsgolf.com contains all the details.
The event was repeated in 2009 and once again it was very successful with a number of local kids participating.

It takes place again in 2010 at Gullane, Craigielaw and Longniddry 1-4 June 2010
