SIGNS UP FOR SAN DIEGO 
UNIVERSITY

Scottish boys' champion Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) has signed a Letter of Intent to enrol at San Diego University , southern California next autumn on a four-year golf scholarship. 
Forrest, 17, picture by courtesy of Andy Forman, is one of Scotland 's brightest teenage prospects. He won the Scottish Under-16 boys' title at Largs last year and the Scottish boys' match-play championship at West Kilbride in April this year. 
He also lost in a three-way play-off for the prestigious Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters title at Nizels Golf Club, Kent this past summer. 
He played for Great Britain and Ireland against the Continent of Europe in the Jacques Leglise Trophy boys' international match in Italy . 
San Diego University head men's golf coach Tim Mickelson, younger brother of Phil, said on the college website: 
"We are very excited that Grant will be joining the USD golf family next September. He is a very accomplished player who will make an immediate impact for us next year. 
"Grant has already proven his talents on the course and he is also a true gentleman. From the time I met him on his official visit, I knew Grant would be an excellent fit at USD. 
"He is also an excellent student who takes pride in his academics. We could not be more excited to embrace him into our programme next fall." 
Among the Scots already at American colleges are James Byrne, who is halfway through his final year at Arizona State, Frazer Ogston (Texas Wesleyan), Paul Ferrier(Charlotte), Neil Henderson (Old Dominion), Jordan McColl (New Mexico JC), Gavin Hay (Carson-Newman), David McGregor (Post University), Conor O’Neil and James Ross (Michigan State), Thomas Rennie (Brevard College), Andrew McLachlan (Tyler JC), Kyle Godsman and Mark Dickson (Gullane GC & USC Aiken) and Stuart Ballingall (Missouri). 

SGU - Changes in Performance Team

Dear All

With Spencer leaving us earlier this year the Performance Team has undergone some changes and to replace Spencer we have undergone a recruitment process which has now been completed. So everyone is aware, the new positions and the people that have taken the roles are:

Neil Marr – Head Coach U18’s- Neil has worked closly with the SGU for many years as an Academy coach but also supported Spencer in many competitons. He is an excellent coach with a great track record, who has been covering the team since Spencer left so already has a great relationship with all of the squad.

Adam Hunter – Head coach U16’s- Adam like Neil has worked with the SGU for many years. He is an intergral part of our Academy system and brings a huge amount of expeirence and knowledge with him to the Under 16s position.

Kevin Cademy-Taylor – Performance Development Manager- Kevin has extensive management experience within the manufacuring industry and also has a very strong golfing background. He has worked with the English Golf Union for a number of years in voluntary postions with the Under 18s and Development Programme, he also has extensive playing and coaching experience. Kevin will be joining us to oversee the Academy programme and develop much closer links with our County and Area Performance Programmes as well as further developing the Performance Club Concepts.  

Neil and Adam will start with immediate effect and Kevin will start on 07/02/11

I am sure having these new positions in place will help us develop and support our Counties and Areas more effectively and ensure our squad programmes continue to improve enhancing the support we offer to our best young players and  achieving better results on the World Stage.

Dear All

I write to advise that Torquil McInroy has left his post as Clubgolf Project Manager after four years to pursue new career opportunities.   Torquil has been a valued and important member of our team in Clubgolf and Scottish golf.  He has made a significant contribution in his time with us and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

We will take this opportunity to review the management of the programme as we look to the future, to ensure that we do everything we can to build on the excellent platform established to ensure the children introduced to golf through Clubgolf move into a life-long involvement in the game and as golf club members. 

In the interim, I will oversee the Clubgolf programme, including line management of the team of Regional Managers.  Please do not hesitate to contact me on any matter related to Clubgolf.

Scottish Golf Academy Under-16s Winter Series event at Strathmore Golf Centre

Ailsa, Gabrielle, Clara tie for first

St Andrews Golf Club juniors Ewan Scott and Ben Kinsley figured in a 1-2 finish to the boys' section of the Scottish Golf Academy Under-16s Winter Series 18-hole event at Strathmore Golf Centre, Alyth today.
Gabrielle McDonald (Craigielaw), winner of the girls' first event at The Glen at the end of October, figured in a three-way tie this time with Clara Young (North Berwick) and Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) at the head of the girls' field.
Scott, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, winner of the English open Under-14s championship last year, headed a field of 40 boys with a sparkling round of four-under-par 68 which featured a flawless inward half of 32 with birdies at the 10th, 12th, 15th and 16th.
He won by two strokes from clubmate Kinsley who birdied three of the last four holes for a 70 to finish two ahead of third-placed Ben Craggs (Glenbervie).
Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie), the boys' winner at The Glen, could not get in contention this time round and finished with a six-over-par 78. His only birdie came at the last hole.
Ailsa Summers had a two-stroke advantage over both Gabrielle McDonald and Clara Young when she reached the turn in two-over 35 but the latter pair made up the difference by each coming home in one-under 36 to Ailsa's 38. 
Clara birdied the 11th, 15th and 18th, Gabrielle the 15th and 18th. Summers too had late birdies at the 15th and 18th but they were surrounded by bogeys at the 14th, 16th and 17th.
In a tight finish to the girls' section, Summers, McDonald and Young finished only one stroke ahead of three players on 76 - Scottish girls' match-play champion Lesley Atkins (Gullane Ladies), Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) and Renfrewshire county champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm). 
The third Scottish Golf Academy Under-16s Winter Series event will be held at the Eden course, St Andrews on Sunday, February 6.

Europe’s leading girl golfers will have a trip to Ireland on their minds when they tee up in next year's Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship, to be played Gullane Golf Club's No 1 course near Edinburgh from August 8-12.

The Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship is the last of seven counting events in which Europe’s top girls can qualify for an automatic place in the European team to face the Americans at the 2011 Ping Junior Solheim Cup, staged at Knightsbrook Hotel Spa & Golf Resort in Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland, on September 20-21.

The qualification process starts at the Spanish International Ladies’ Amateur Championship at Sherry Golf Jerez (March 2-6) and then takes in the Irish Under-18 Girls’ Championship at Knightsbrook Hotel Spa and Golf Resort (April 9-10), the French International Lady Junior Championship at St Cloud Golf Club (April 21-25), the European Girls’ Team Championship at Is Molas, Sardinia, Italy (July 5-9), the European Ladies’ Team Championship at GC Murhof, Austria (July 5-9) and the European Individual Championship at Noordwijkse, The Netherlands (July 20-23) before the qualification system culminates at the end of the Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship at Gullane when the leading six players from the official Points Table will earn an automatic place in the European side.

The six qualifiers will be joined by a further six Captain’s Picks in a European side bidding to wrest the trophy back from an American side which won the last match at Aurora Golf Club, Illinois, in 2009 to take a slender 3-2 lead in the series.

All 12 members of the European team must be 12-18 years old (born 1993 or later) and must not have reached their 18th birthday prior to January 1, 2011. Participants must be amateurs and not be members of a competitive collegiate golf programme. They must also be European citizens.

The PING Junior Solheim Cup always takes place immediately ahead of The Solheim Cup, this year due to be played at Killeen Castle from September 23-25, 2011.

The Ultimate Golf Playground?

As a golfer, have you ever dreamed of a place where golf is integral in each and every day and where the land is resplendent with one fabulous golf hole after another?  Of a place where the views as you play are unrivalled and the appreciation for the grand old game knows few parallels?

There are a few places in the world that could make a claim as being all this and you have to put East Lothian, Scotland, and its 22 golf courses, on that list.

We found ourselves at the Gullane Golf Club(est. 1882) today as we near the end of our Ultimate Golf Road Trip and it is easy to say that this area is a fitting spot to close out our incredible journey.

On an incredible landscape marked by a notable hill, three golf courses are laid out at Gullane, two crafted by Willie Park, Jr. himself with a third, #1, so enthralling that I could easily play it every day for the rest of my life and not feel a sliver of boredom.

We kicked the day off properly courtesy of a chat with historian Archie Baird who has written a book about golf on Gullane Hill, and has a small collection of memorabilia on display just off the pro shop at Gullane.  Within minutes he had clubs built by British Open champions Jack White and Willie Park, Jr. in our hands while he conveyed the story of golf as it came to be.  We were privileged to get the audience with the man who jokes that he has the ultimate golf collectible – his wife Sheila happens to be the great-granddaughter of Willie Park, Sr.

I’ll not be long winded in my post tonight as the pace of the trip is wearing on my health but I will simply say that when we were standing on the 7th tee at Gullane #1, the highest point in the region, and Allan Minto of East Lothian Golf counted out the total of golf courses that could be seen from that perspective, the number reached 14.  That includes the vaulted Muirfield Golf Club, home to the Open Championship in 2013.

Add to that sightlines to Edinburgh and St. Andrews as as well as the entire vastness of the Firth of Forth and it’s significant islands, you can see why Bernard Darwin called it “one of the most beautiful spots in the world.”

More than 75 years after that statement was published in the Times of London, I could not argue the point.

I’ll have plenty more to say about Gullane in future editorial.  It was that impressive.

Tomorrow we play our final round of our trip, a visit to the famed North Berwick Links.

Even fighting a cold and feeling the effects of a hectic schedule I am eager to see another greatEast Lothian course, as well as walk in the steps of the legends who have played the game before me.
