Babe Zaharias cup/Honor Bright Trophy

Dear Golfer,

Babe Zaharias born in 1911 was an American Athlete named by the Guiness Book of World Records, along with Lottie Dod, as the most versatile female competitor, achieving outstanding success in golf, basketball and track and field. She was also an expert diver, roller skater and bowler.

At the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic games Babe won 2 gold medals and a silver for track and field events, girl power or what!

In 1935, she began to play golf, a late comer to the sport but by which she would become most famous. In 1947 Babe traveled to Scotland to compete in and win the British ladies amateur golf championship right here in Gullane! Babe along with her considerable other achievements was also instrumental in setting up what is today the LPGA.

Sadly, Babe died in 1956 having achieved an incredible amount of respect in the sporting world. In 1964 her husband George Zaharias donated a cup to Gullane primary school in memory of his wife.

The Babe Zaharias Cup

Has been hotly contested by Gullane primary school pupils ever since. I am delighted to report that this year on the 18th of June it is no different and that 10 pupils have stepped up to pitch their golfing prowess to compete for the cup over 18 holes. Also, as in previous years a smaller scaled down version played over 6 holes with 11 pupils will also be taking part on the 18th.

A call out for volunteer scorers has been widely received but there is still an opportunity to help. If you are interested in helping out contact Andy Walker on 01620 842135. Gullane GC will generously provide Food and Refreshments at the end of the competition in the main clubhouse.

The 18th of June is all about golf!!

The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfer, based at Muirfield GC have invited a number of Gullane primary children to take part in a coaching event on the morning of the 18th. Gullane GC professional Alisdair Good along with other GC professionals from East Lothian will be there to impart their considerable knowledge of the game of golf to the children.

Honor Bright Trophy

This trophy was donated to the school in 1922 by the then retiring Headmaster and has, with the exception of the war years been hotly contested ever since. This match play competition will take place on Gullane GC number 3 course over the next three weeks, culminating with the winner being announced on the 18th June. Mrs Tremmel (Gullane Primary Head Teacher) has handed out the format for the children who are taking part. Parents are advised that due to the American Kids European event taking place next week that timed slots will be hard to get so please book a slot as soon as possible. All games must be played before the 18th June.

Again, Junes all about Golf, if you would like to volunteer or support these coming events please call me Andy Walker on 01620 842135. Look forward to seeing you and your support.

Clubgolfers
P6's again getting to grips with the match winners, putting and chipping it's not all about driving!
P5's scheduled to enhance their putting skills.

Again many thanks to the Clubgolf children for showing their enthusiasm in learning the game.

Regards
Andy Walker

Seven Blue Flag awards for Scottish beaches

 Wednesday, 26 May 2010
Children on Broughty Ferry beach

A beach in the Scottish Borders has been awarded Blue Flag status for the
first time.
Coldingham Bay is one of seven beaches in Scotland
which have been given the coveted international award
in 2010.
But Montrose Seafront in Angus and Elie Harbour Beach
in Fife lost their Blue Flag this year after failing to
 meet the criteria.
Another 56 beaches have been commended for their quality
by Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB).
Among those picking up the Seaside Award for the first
time in 2010 include Sandend in Aberdeenshire, Abroath
and Lunan Bay in Angus and Bruce Embankment in Fife.
Water quality
Special recommendations have also been given to
16 beaches which have achieved the award for
more than 10 years in a row.
These include Gullane Bents in East Lothian,
which has consistently won the accolade since
the scheme began in Scotland in 1993.
The Seaside Award programme assesses beaches
on litter management, information provision, risk
assessment and water quality.

BLUE FLAG BEACHES 2010

  • Broughty Ferry, Dundee
  • Aberdour Silver Sands, Fife
  • Burntisland, Fife
  • Elie Ruby Bay, Fife
  • Leven, Fife
  • St Andrews West Sands, Fife
  • Coldingham, Scottish Borders
To achieve Blue Flag status, which is recognised across the world, the site must meet strict criteria including the highest EU standards of bathing water.
John Summers, chief executive of KSB, said: "Over the last 10 years the number of Seaside Awards in Scotland has more than quadrupled, there were just 13 in 2000.
"I am particularly delighted to welcome Coldingham Bay
in the Scottish Borders to the Blue Flag list and to see more
beaches joining the award scheme in Aberdeenshire and
Angus too."
Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said Scotland
was recognised all over the world for "unspoilt and stunning" surroundings.
"The fact that the number of Seaside Awards has soared in
the past decade is a major boost for the tourist industry,"
he added.

Tounament Director Speaks !

Gullane has a great junior program! It is definetly one the best in the world and I think a Gullanite may one day be The Open Champion! I look forward to being there next week for the U.S.Kids Golf European Championship. I wish all of you who have entered the best of luck- come out and watch some fantastic golf.... John Godwin U.S. Kids Golf Tournament Director

NORTH BERWICK CHILDREN'S GOLF COURSE COMPETITIONS

These very successful competitions for under 14s take place every year at the Kids' Course in North Berwick which is to be found adjacent to the Marine Hotel. Kids can play on this course for an annual fee of £10 / £20 depending on age - contact the pro shop at North Berwick. It really is an excellent course for kids and is a good next step from the Gullane Kids' Course with small greens, real rough, bunkers, out of bounds and, typically for North Berwick, walls coming into play! Many North Berwick and Gullane kids have honed their skills here before taking on the bigger courses. Catriona Matthew, now one of the best women golfers in the world and British Ladies Open Champion played in these competitions and PGA Tour player Nick Dougherty travelled up from Liverpool to compete. The course is no Mickey Mouse challenge though - the best kids can shoot under par scores and would happily take on even the best local adults - be warned! All kids ( boys and girls ) are welcomed although those under 8 are not usually allowed into the knock-out competitions.

The competitions in 2010  are  to be :-

Saturday 10 July - July Cup ( Stroke Play )
Friday 16 July - Balfour-Melville ( Knock-Out )
Saturday 31 July  - Cree Medal ( Stroke Play )
Saturday 7 August Esmond Cup ( Knock-Out )
Saturday 14 August Malcolm Cup ( Strokeplay / Knock-Out )

For further details / entry form please contact Iain McLean ( ir.mclean@yahoo.co.uk)
